Last Band Standing: Game 2

Atmosphere heads to the lemonade laboratory for Game 2

No one wants to fall down 0-2 in a 7 game series. Especially not AC/DC, Allman Brothers Band, or Atmosphere (tough luck with the A acts, huh?) Listen to this next round of match-ups and submit your votes by Tuesday evening at 8 pm as we drive toward the three bands that will be sticking around for our Royal Rumble.

Cotton Fields (Beach Boys) vs. Shhhh (Atmosphere)

Pony Boy (Allman Brothers Band) vs. In God’s Country (U2)

Girls Got Rhythm (AC/DC) vs. Dancing Days (Led Zeppelin)

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

Was this AC/DC song on the soundtrack to Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure? It should have been. Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.

Whoa! I don’t remember if it was, and IMDB doesn’t claim it, but who’s to say it didn’t play in the movie.

Lead vocals on Cotton Fields by Al Jardine, bassist and 4th lead, a sentimental favorite of mine.

Pony Boy (Allman Brothers Band) 7.5
    In God’s Country (U2) 7

    Girls Got Rhythm (AC/DC) 8.5
    Dancing Days (Led Zeppelin) 6

Cotton Fields (Beach Boys) vs. Shhhh (Atmosphere) 5.0 to 5.1 – There is no way the BB’s should do this song.

I’m going for gut feelings over technical ability in my voting this round. Sometimes ya just gotta vote for what you like instead of what you feel like you should like.

    Cotton Fields (Beach Boys) 5
    Shhhh (Atmosphere) 6
Their harmonizing is fabulous and their songs are just so damn pretty, but the Beach Boys just aren’t getting me excited. I think the hip hop has been really refreshing for this tourney, and I’m gonna have to put em on top.

Pony Boy (Allman Brothers Band) X
    In God’s Country (U2) X
Oh U2. They wrote Joshua Tree in an attempt to capture 2 Americas: the promise and the reality. Pretty sure this is the centerpiece of that feeling.

    Girls Got Rhythm (AC/DC) 7.3
    Dancing Days (Led Zeppelin) 6.2
Joe, I thought you were gonna get killed this round. But I’m just gonna say it: I like STP’s version of Dancing Days better. No, they didn’t write it, and yes, they capitalized off someone else’s talent. But they made the song errie and sexy in a way that Zepp failed for me. And there is nothing like AC/DC to get you through a shitty work day. I could listen to Girls Got Rhythm on loop. And guess what? That’s what I’m doing right now.

    • Sam, that’s how I vote every time, we definitely encourage gut feelings. Beach Boys when it’s sunny and you’re in love versus Beach Boys when it’s rainy and your date just ditched you are two very different things, from personal experience.

    • joe says:

Oh Sam… STP really? I’m so conflicted right now. I should be ecstatic that you’ve voted AC/DC over Zeppelin, but really I want to cry in a corner that somehow a band that drove me kinda batty in the 90’s recorded a killer version of Dancing Days. 😉

I absolutely agree with you about U2.

Pony Boy (Allman Brothers Band): 7
    In God’s Country (U2): 6

Now that’s some down home country blues. I don’t know if it’s the dreary weather here or if I’m just in that kind of mood, but I’m all about some Pony Boy. I love the spoon clapping at the end of the song it really brings it all back home. In God’s Country is a fine song for U2, The Edge actually has a bit of a rock sound. It may be about America, but I’m just not feeling that typical U2 sound today.

    Girls Got Rhythm (AC/DC): 8
    Dancing Days (Led Zeppelin): 7

Tough one here. Dancing Days is a great song with great guitar riffs and solid drumming. It’s always been able to get my head to nod in that typical rock fashion. As far as fun songs go here though I’m going to have to side with AC/DC, Bon Scott just knows how to turn a dirty lyric into something magical and groovy. Damn that’s dirty.

Sorry, haven’t had any time the past week to get into this. I wanted to get some votes in for the first time in a couple rounds, though.

Pony Boy (Allman Brothers Band) NA
    In God’s Country (U2) NA

    Girls Got Rhythm (AC/DC) 6.5

Grooveshark took a dump on me with the Beach Boys song. It wouldn’t play a second. So I looked it up… who knew they recorded two versions of this song? I absolutely dig the “remake” aka the country version with the lap steel guitar. The Atmosphere song has a killer groove, and I dig a hometown love song. I’m too East Coast to live in the midwest, but good for you dude. Own your city.

Pony Boy (The Allman Brothers) 6.5
    In God’s Country (U2) 8

Delta blues vs. the Irish discovering America. I actually LOVE this U2 song. Maybe it’s a bit of nostalgia that I rate it so high. I don’t really know. This song has always resonated with me in some unexplainable way. Lighting will strike me tonight since I love the blues, and I’m voting for pop.

    Girls Got Rhythm (AC/DC) XX
    Dancing Days (Led Zeppelin) XX

  14. Adrock says:

Probably too late, but wanted to weight in anyway
