Last Band Standing: Partido Siete

Votes due by Wednesday 5/2 at 5:00 PM: Where dreams are made or broken. Yes, folks, for 3 out of 4 of our series’, Game 7 is where two bands enter and one band will definitely leave. But first, the results from the weekend games. Oh also, sorry Bruins fans- if it’s any consolation the Rangers made the Caps look pretty silly Saturday.

Facing elimination, Jenn decided to start flexing the big guns and it paid off. “American Girl” rains all over “Every Hungry Woman,” 62-43.3 and forces an epic Game 7 battle.

The Rush-Atmosphere battle has been great to watch, and I think Coach Greg deserves some serious props. This one ends here for Rush, as “Little Math You” triumphs over “Red Barcheta,” 37.9-29.5. Atmosphere takes the series in 6 games, and the entire Van Munching Hall Copy Center staff now waits to see who their next opponents will be.

The Beach Boys-Band showdown has been classic after classic, and this last pairing did not waver. “The Weight” is a powerhouse tourney song, and was an Elite Eight survivor in the 550 song original tournament. “California Girls” garnered a respectable 7.14 average, but ultimately falls 67.5-57.1, paving the way to another fantastic Game 7.

Zeppelin and Stevie have their Game 7 below as well, while Soundgarden faces elimination in Game 6 versus U2. Songs are here, good luck to everyone, and may the best band advance.

Game 7: Tuesday Afternoon (Stevie Wonder) vs. Trampled Under Foot (Led Zeppelin)

Game 6: Loud Love (Soundgarden) vs. Running To Stand Still (U2)

Game 7: Whipping Post (Allman Brothers) vs. Refugee (Tom Petty)

Game 7: Good Vibrations (Beach Boys) vs. Cripple Creek (The Band)

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

Game 7: Tuesday Afternoon (Stevie Wonder) vs. Trampled Under Foot (Led Zeppelin) 6 – 7.5

Game 6: Loud Love (Soundgarden) vs. Running To Stand Still (U2) 5.5-4

Game 7: Whipping Post (Allman Brothers) vs. Refugee (Tom Petty) 4.5 – 7

Game 7: Good Vibrations (Beach Boys) vs. Cripple Creek (The Band) 7 – 8

  3. Tuesday Afternoon: 9
    Trampled Under Foot: 7.3

Tuesday Afternoon is a perfect length and a lovely song, I love love. Trampled Under Foot is fun, but kinda just the same thing over and over again.

    Loud Love: 6
    Running To Stand Still: 6.2

This is apparently the slower companion to “Bad” when it comes to U2 songs about the 80’s Dublin heroin epidemic. By an inch.

    Whipping Post: 7.5
    Refugee: 8

This has been a great match-up, great job by all 3 coaches.

    Good Vibrations: 8.2
    Cripple Creek: 7.3

GV is pretty seminal. CC is a good one too. When I lived in Denver there was this sub shop I used to go to that had a Cripple Creek sandwich that I always ordered purely based on the name (yes, I’m that consumer.) Marton v. Marton has been well-fought.

I’m too busy today to write in detail about why I gave the scores I did. I feel bad about missing the previous rounds voting.

    Tuesday Heartbreak (Stevie Wonder) 7
Trampled Under Foot (Led Zeppelin) 8.5

    Loud Love (Soundgarden) 6.5
Running to Stand Still (U2) 7
WOW something off of Louder than Love. I didn’t think that was going to happen. Bono’s voice wins the day here.

Whipping Post (The Allman Brothers) 8.5
    Refugee (Tom Petty) 8
I love both groups, though I tend to favor the Allman’s a little more. I’m going to miss the one that doesn’t make it to the next round. Guillermo you’re evil for matching similar bands against one another.

Good Vibrations (The Beach Boys) 9
    Cripple Creek (The Band) 8
    I love a theremin.

Running To Stand Still (U2) – sorry, my fault for the late submission. the Joshua Tree continues…

    Whipping Post (Allman Brothers) 7
Refugee (Tom Petty) 7.5 – Close again, but one of my favorite Tom Peety songs

    Good Vibrations (Beach Boys) 6.5

    Loud Love (Soundgarden) 7
Running To Stand Still (U2) 9.1
    Great U2 pick!

    Whipping Post (Allman Brothers) 9.4
    Refugee (Tom Petty) 9
Kudos to the coaches for giving their aces the keys for Game 7. Have loved both these songs since I was a young ‘un.

    Good Vibrations (Beach Boys) NA
    Cripple Creek (The Band) NA
    Biting nails…

Tuesday Heartbreak (Stevie Wonder) My favorite Stevie Song. I had to fit it in before the end.
    Trampled Under Foot (Led Zeppelin)

    Loud Love (Soundgarden) 4
Running To Stand Still (U2) 5

    Whipping Post (Allman Brothers) 7
    Refugee (Tom Petty) 6

    Good Vibrations (Beach Boys) 8
    Cripple Creek (The Band) 7

Really curious where each coach will go if they win. Janos has used the big hits from Pet Sounds and the biggest hit off of Smile; the Band’s already burned through the Weight, Dixie and Cripple Creek. It’s the deep cuts that make these match ups interesting, and I wish both teams could advance.

    Good Vibrations (Beach Boys) 9.5
Cripple Creek (The Band) NA 7.9

Not a whole lotta time, but I had to post with such great songs this round…

    Tuesday Heartbreak (Stevie Wonder) 6
Trampled Under Foot (Led Zeppelin) 7.5
This was a genius pairing by team Zeppelin. It’s almost as if Stevie put me in a better mood for “Trampled Under Foot.”

    Loud Love (Soundgarden) 7
Running To Stand Still (U2) 6.5
Yet another great track off Joshua Tree, but the driving rhythm of “Loud Love” put Soundgarden on top this round.

    Whipping Post (Allman Brothers) N/A
    Refugee (Tom Petty) N/A
I can’t vote for this one, but I just wanted to say that this was an awesome match-up. Both songs complimented each other so well, and that was evidenced by the overall close scores.

    Good Vibrations (Beach Boys) 6
    Cripple Creek (The Band) 7.2
I know this is classic Beach Boys, and the harmonizing was top notch. But I’ve gotta give it to Levon this time around.

  14. Greg Burch says:

    Tuesday Heartbreak (Stevie Wonder): 7
Trampled Under Foot (Led Zeppelin): 8.5

Tuesday Heartbreak is a wonderful love song, I honestly have a hard time thinking that back then Stevie could do any wrong. I’m grooving along with Stevie and then Jimmy Page comes slashing through with another great funky guitar riff and John Paul Jones just goes to town on the drums and holds a great funk beat. With Robert Plant screaming sexual innuendos I just forget how sweet and wonderful Stevie is.

    Loud Love (Soundgarden): 7
Running To Stand Still (U2): 8

Kim Thayil is just nasty on the guitar, gotta love Cornell screaming his head off. A solid cut from U2, Bono can write an amazing song. I hate myself for this, good luck with U2 Dan.

    Whipping Post (Allman Brothers): 9
    Refugee (Tom Petty): 5

Damn, Whipping Post is a fantastic song. Thank you George and George’s Wife for introducing me to a great track. Gregg Allman is at his best here screaming about hard times and heartache. You have to love those down and out southern rock songs about being a fool for women. There is no way I could vote for Petty with a song like this, even though I really did enjoy Refugee.

    Good Vibrations (Beach Boys): 8
    Cripple Creek (The Band): 7

This has been one of my favorite match-ups, both have burned through massive hits. I’m with Jacob here wondering where each is going to go with their respective bands if they continue on. Possibly the Beach Boys biggest hit and man is it a good song. Cripple Creek might not be as big as The Weight, but it’s still a wonderful song and it’s just so funky. This is definitely a hard choice. In the end I have to go with the Beach Boys, too many good complex harmonies and melodies. I mean who other than the Star Trek theme can use a theremin and make it sound awesome.

  15. Michele says:

    Tuesday Heartbreak (Stevie Wonder) 5
    Trampled Under Foot (Zeppelin) 7
    Loud Love (Soundgarden) 5
Running to Stand Still (U2) 7
    Whipping Post (Allmans) 7
    Refugee (Tom Petty) 6
    Good Vibrations (Beach Boys) 8
    Cripple Creek (The Band) 7

These were all good pairings – I just like what I like!

  16. Dem Adam says:

Game 7: Tuesday Afternoon (Stevie Wonder) vs. Trampled Under Foot (Led Zeppelin) = 4 to 6
Zep is funkier than stevie in this match up

Game 6: Loud Love (Soundgarden) vs. Running To Stand Still (U2) = 9 to 6
Louder Than Love’s fairly flat production likely does not capture how heavy this must’ve been life back in the day.

Game 7: Whipping Post (Allman Brothers) vs. Refugee (Tom Petty) = 5 to 5

Game 7: Good Vibrations (Beach Boys) vs. Cripple Creek (The Band) = 9.5 to 9
The Band is so much cooler and tougher than the Beach Boys, but it doesn’t seal the deal in this matchup.

    • Dem Adam says:

man i love that little double bass off beat emphasis thing at about 00:53 – matt cameron loves to bury these little nuggets into their tunes – he’ll play so straightforward verse after verse, then sprinkle in some nutty subtle roll and move on.

      • Dem Adam says:

Sorry, geeking out. See the drum roll at 4:22 in “Burden in My Hand.” Almost drove my car off the road first time I caught that.

  17. Astrid says:

    Whipping Post (Allman Brothers) 7
    Refugee (Tom Petty) 9

    Good Vibrations (Beach Boys) 8
    Cripple Creek (The Band) 8.5

Thought I posted this last night, but alas I failed. Here goes:

    Tuesday Heartbreak (Stevie Wonder) *
Trampled Under Foot (Led Zeppelin) *

Very sad to see this end – I love Stevie and wish he were continuing – just makes every round pleasant to listen to.

    Loud Love (Soundgarden) 7.5
Running To Stand Still (U2) 5

Loud Love was exactly what I needed. Just not my favorite U2 song..it happens

    Whipping Post (Allman Brothers) 8
    Refugee (Tom Petty) 6.1

Maybe my favorite Allman Brothers track though. Just incredible.

    Good Vibrations (Beach Boys) 5.5
    Cripple Creek (The Band) 7.3

Had to relisten to this… can’t explain why I love Cripple Creek… but I’m definitely not feeling good vibrations today…work beats that out of me
