Music tournament strategizing is in full swing this weekend. Some coaches see the first round slipping away, others try to lock it down, and a few in the middle are trying to navigate wins without pitching their big guns. It all makes for an entertaining tournament. Listen to Game 4 match-ups here (by the way, does the “U” in Match-up look better capitalized or not in the headline?), and vote by commenting before 10pm (EST) on Tuesday. Tuesday night gets a bonus hour, as I won’t be getting to the next update until after my weekly basketball pick-up game. And now, Game 3 Results:
These Bones (Super Furry Animals) holds off It’s So Hard to Be a Saint in the City (live) (Bruce Springsteen), 94-88. Even Boss fans expressed some disappointment here, and SFA jumps to a surprising 2-1 lead. Gmo is yet to call on any of the big dogs, though.
Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) def. Should I Stay or Should I Go (Clash), 124-110. A second straight win for the Stones puts them ahead 2-1. Game 4 should be a close battle.
Under Pressure (David Bowie) crushes That’s Where It’s At (Sam Cooke), 154-115. After two narrow wins, Grant had enough and called in the ace. The call had some valid strategy to it, as Under Pressure took out one of Cooke’s best songs and brought Bowie back into the series. Sam Cooke still leads 2-1, with both coaches putting up top songs for Game 4.
Living Loving Maid (Led Zeppelin) defeats Sunday Girl (Blondie), 117-98. With Led Zeppelin up 3-0, Aiko turns to Call Me, which stormed its way through the Living the Dream tournament a little over a year ago.
Game 4 Match-ups
The Man Don’t Give A Fuck (Super Furry Animals) vs. I’m On Fire (Bruce Springsteen)
Wrong ‘Em Boyo (Clash) vs. Street Fighting Man (Rolling Stones)
Bring It On Home To Me (Sam Cooke) vs. Modern Love (David Bowie)
Call Me (Blondie) vs. The Crunge (Led Zeppelin)
The Man Don’t Give A Fuck (Super Furry Animals) 4 Cool back story about the use of the sample and the effort to set the record for the most instances of the word fuck in a track, but after that…
vs. I’m On Fire (Bruce Springsteen) 6
Wrong ‘Em Boyo (Clash) 6 Good song, but can we get some early Clash in here? London Calling is a great album, but three of four songs in the first round makes it seem like it’s their only crutch. Can I request Police and Thieves from their first album?
vs. Street Fighting Man (Rolling Stones) 4 Whenever the Stones attempt to get political it just makes them seem shallow. Now Emotional Rescue, that’s a Stones message song I can get behind.
Bring It On Home To Me (Sam Cooke) 7 This is pretty lovely.
vs. Modern Love (David Bowie) 10 Maybe my favorite Bowie song. Hope this helps turn the tide.
Call Me (Blondie) 7
vs. The Crunge (Led Zeppelin) 6
The Man Don’t Give A Fuck (Super Furry Animals) vs. I’m On Fire (Bruce Springsteen) = # to #
“Rhys has claimed that the track does not refer to a particular issue but is about the “mistreatment that we’ve had at the hands of politicians for years,” describing “The Man Don’t Give a Fuck” as a “protest song for our time” which can be used against “any organisation which you feel is terrorising you as an individual, anyone who’s cramping your style.””
Wrong ‘Em Boyo (Clash) vs. Street Fighting Man (Rolling Stones) = 7.5 to 8.0
The first minute of “Wrong Em Boyo” is one of my favorite moments in the Clash catalog. However it doesn’t carry over the same tough edge as “Rudy Can’t Fail” whereas Street Fighting Man IS a tough song so I have to give it the nod.
Bring It On Home To Me (Sam Cooke) vs. Modern Love (David Bowie) = 6.5 to 8.5
Call Me (Blondie) vs. The Crunge (Led Zeppelin) = 5.5 to 5
I have never heard “The Crunge” before. Fascinating.
The Man Don’t Give A Fuck (Super Furry Animals) vs. I’m On Fire (Bruce Springsteen)
6/8.75
I liked the SFA song, but this is one of the few Springsteen songs that I really like.
Wrong ‘Em Boyo (Clash) vs. Street Fighting Man (Rolling Stones)
4.5/6
Bring It On Home To Me (Sam Cooke) vs. Modern Love (David Bowie)
*/*
I hoped I could fly through this round without pulling out Sam’s big songs, but after Under Pressure, I had to rethink that. Grant, if I didn’t like Bowie so much, I might be mad at you! 🙂
Call Me (Blondie) vs. The Crunge (Led Zeppelin)
9/7.5
I’ve really enjoyed most of these Blondie tracks. This is probably my favorite, though. As corny as it is, I had it as my ringtone for ages.
The Man Don’t Give A Fuck (Super Furry Animals) vs. I’m On Fire (Bruce Springsteen)
Sorry SFA, but in high school I re-wrote “I’m on Fire” for a play, and it remains my one of my favorite songs from the Born in the USA and Beyond Era.
4: 8
Wrong ‘Em Boyo (Clash) vs. Street Fighting Man (Rolling Stones)
8.5: 7
Wrong ‘Em Boyo is punchy fun that demonstrates the vast leap in musical dexterity the Clash took from their second album to London Calling, much of it coaxed and prodded from their maniacal producer, Guy Stevens, who was eventually fired for smashing a bottle of wine on an expensive piano during the recording of Card Cheat.
Bring It On Home To Me (Sam Cooke) vs. Modern Love (David Bowie)
6.5 : 9.5
Modern Love is my 2nd favorite Bowie song, after “Young Americans”
Call Me (Blondie) vs. The Crunge (Led Zeppelin)
8 : 5
This may be obvious, but The Crunge is a tribute to James Brown. It’s a creative idea, but doesn’t work for me musically.

I thought that TMDGAF just gets boring from about halfway through onwards (especially the last 1 1/2 mins), despite the punchy start. Don’t know if I’ve ever knowingly heard I’m on Fire before but I really liked it. I actually just listened to it again at the end and gave it an extra .5 – it’s really nice.

Street Fighting Man (Rolling Stones) 5
Bring It On Home To Me (Sam Cooke) 7.5

Lindsay! I liked it! Lovely song. Alas, this Bowie is an absolute rollicking smile-maker and I LOVE it. Can you imagine if it was 1983 and you were of club-going age with this busting out from a speaker on a dancefloor? Oh, man…so good.
Call Me (Blondie) 8.5
The Crunge (Led Zeppelin) 4.5
Call Me is SO GOOD!
The Man Don’t Give A Fuck (Super Furry Animals) – 7

I’m On Fire (Bruce Springsteen) – 7.5
one of the few springsteen songs i really like… tough match… ‘fuck’ got me pumped up, ‘fire’ tugged at some emotions… emotion-tugging gets the edge
