Last Band Standing: Game 5 Match-ups (and Game 4 Results)

Note (1:40 am/Thursday): Grooveshark is back up, but that was a scary few hours. The Shark’s days seem potentially numbered, and we’ll continue figuring out what service we should use instead (Spotify, PlayIt, YouTube.)

Calling all coaches!   We’re on the verge of a big announcement about how Last Band Standing will play out in the weeks ahead, but first I need someone to step up and coach- perhaps one of our regular voters, like Megan, Eileen or Joe.  Mull it over while you’re listening to Game 5 match-ups.

As always, vote by commenting below before 11:59pm (EST) on Thursday.   We’ve extended it a few hours to make up for last night’s Grooveshark problems. And now, Game 4 Results:

I’m On Fire (Bruce Springsteen) cruises past The Man Don’t Give A Fuck (Super Furry Animals), 106-73.  This was an easy one for the Boss, who nets the series 2-2.   The next SFA pick is huge, as Dem Adam would really like a 3-2 lead given the Boss’s powerful catalogue.

Street Fighting Man (Rolling Stones) squeaks past Wrong ‘Em Boyo (Clash), 96-92.5, to take a 3-1 series lead.  This was a tough one for Cristina to lose, and it forces her to go call in her ace, Rock the Casbah.  Meanwhile, Mike comes back with his 2nd #1 hit of the round, Brown Sugar.

Modern Love (David Bowie) edges out Bring It On Home To Me (Sam Cooke), 121-103, to even the series at 2-2.  Both coaches have been tested in this battle, which could easily go the full seven games.  I’m no excel whiz like Gmo, but I bet if you graphed the scores on these two you’d find a lot of high and low scores for David Bowie and a lot of 6s/7s for Sam Cooke.  Grant comes out swinging for Game 5.

Call Me (Blondie) stomps The Crunge (Led Zeppelin), 119-83.   Blondie staved off elimination with its go-to hit, and now trails 3-1.   Look below for a real barnburner ahead in Game 5.

Game 5 Match-ups

It’s Not The End of the World? (Super Furry Animals)  vs.  Rosalita (Bruce Springsteen)

Rock the Casbah (Clash) vs. Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones)

Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me (Sam Cooke) vs. Young Americans (David Bowie)

One Way Or Another (Blondie) vs. Misty Mountain Hop (Led Zeppelin)

After Game 5, home court advantage reverts back to SFA/Clash/Cooke/Blondie for Games 6 and 7.

    vs. Rosalita (Bruce Springsteen) 6
First time I’ve knowingly heard Rosalita and I just don’t know how I feel about it. I feel like it’s probably one that gets better and better the more familiar you are with it. Giving it the benefit of the doubt here.

    Rock the Casbah (Clash) 6.5
vs. Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones) 7

Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me (Sam Cooke) 5
vs. Young Americans (David Bowie) 9.5
    Bowie for King!

Love the Debbie rasp. I’m not sure what I’m missing with Misty Mountain but it did very little for me.

  7. adam says:

It’s Not The End of the World? (Super Furry Animals) vs. Rosalita (Bruce Springsteen) = x to y

Rock the Casbah (Clash) vs. Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones) = 3.5 to 6
Sorry, I just never was able to groove to Rock the Casbah. Never really paid attention to the sax solo before. At 1:50 / 1:51 Keith almost lost track of things, or nearly dropped his pick. Never caught that before either.

Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me (Sam Cooke) vs. Young Americans (David Bowie) = 6.5 to 7.5

One Way Or Another (Blondie) vs. Misty Mountain Hop (Led Zeppelin) = 4.5 to 8
I hope Blondie continues on so we can hear ‘Waiting by the Telephone!’ This is a really cool Zepplin song.

  8. It’s Not The End of the World? (Super Furry Animals) vs. Rosalita (Bruce Springsteen) 7.5/5.75
Okay, I started out really liking Rosalita, but after about the 5 minute mark, it was too much for me.

Rock the Casbah (Clash) vs. Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones) 5/7.5

Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me (Sam Cooke) vs. Young Americans (David Bowie) */*

One Way Or Another (Blondie) vs. Misty Mountain Hop (Led Zeppelin) 7/8

  9. Joe Denson says:

It’s Not the End of the World (SFA) 5
    Rosalita (Bruce Springsteen) 8

Super Furry solid choice, but Rosilita, is just an awesome song. It just makes me want to drink cheep beer, good tequila, and make an ass out of myself hitting on some woman.

Rock the Casbah (The Clash) 2
Brown Sugar (The Rolling Stones) 9

No damn way is Brown Sugar losing to this Clash song. Sticky Fingers is awesome soup to nuts. Who else could celebrate heroin like the Stones?

Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me (Sam Cooke) 7
    Young Americans (David Bowie) 5

I love this Bowie song, but Sam could sing the phone book and I would be hooked.

One Way or Another (Blondie) 4
Misty Mountain Hop (Led Zeppelin) 9.5

I know I’ll be in the minority here, but the rhythm in this Zeppelin song is amazing, and while the Blondie song was a major hit, it can’t compare.

Great work, everyone, I dug every song!

It’s Not The End of the World? (Super Furry Animals) vs. Rosalita (Bruce Springsteen)
8.3 : 10 My favorite SFA song yet, but man, Rosalita is other-worldly. Bruce had to be at the perfect intersection of hungry for it and skilled to craft a song like this.
Rock the Casbah (Clash) vs. Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones)
9.5 : 7 I encourage folks to check out the music video for Casbah, it’s pretty delightful.

Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me (Sam Cooke) vs. Young Americans (David Bowie)
7.5 : 10 “You’re gonna regret the day you met me.” Look out, Sam’s getting feisty! Young Americans has been a personal anthem since 2007, though I may have to hang it up when I turn 30.

One Way Or Another (Blondie) vs. Misty Mountain Hop (Led Zeppelin)
8: 7.5 Misty could have gone as high as 9 if I was in the right mood, but it making me feel like drinking on a mountain in New Zealand doesn’t play well when I’m at my desk on the 28th floor.

“It’s not the end of the world?” 2 <– was this a song or the closing credits to some emo movie targeted at 14 year old girls?
      VS.
"Rosalita" 7.5 <– great, I feel like I should be out boozing in early afternon in New Orleans or something
      ————-
"Rock the Casbah" 7 <— God, I'd hate to see the Clash lose this round, but Rock the Casbah's just not in my top ten (I blame the LSM) among Clash songs
      VS.
      "Brown Sugar" <— 8 <— Boss song
      ————-
"Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me" 4 <— There's better Sam Cooke out there, a little too repetitive for my tastes (I have the attention span of a four year old)
"Young Americans" <— 6 Gonna go ahead and use the Janos "maybe if I weren't at work right now" excuse
      ————-
"One Way Or Another" <— 5.5 I mean I think I get it, but..
"Misty Mountain Top" <— 8 sweet action

It’s Not The End of the World? (Super Furry Animals) 6
    Rosalita (Bruce Springsteen) 8.1

Enjoyed the Furry ones again, but this time, Gmo busted out one of my favorite Springsteen songs. Just nothing to be done about it.

    Rock the Casbah (Clash) 8
    Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones) 5

Brown Sugar has just never been my preferred Stones song. Don’t want to see this matchup end either – great battles here.

Somebody’s Gonna Miss Me (Sam Cooke) 7
    Young Americans (David Bowie) 8.5

Damn – really good Sam song vs. great Bowie. Also really enjoying the style contrast here.

  16. Kate G says:

It’s Not The End of the World? (Super Furry Animals) 4 vs. Rosalita (Bruce Springsteen) 8.4 (I can’t even remember how many shows I waited through till I finally got to hear this live, probably in 2008 or 2009. But I’d say it was worth the wait. Use it Rosie! That’s what it’s there for!)
