Last Band Standing: Game 3 (and Game 2 results)

This is where it gets exciting, folks.   Coaches down 2-0 have to start fighting now to stay alive.    Those tied at 1-1 have to assess what worked and what didn’t heading into Game 3.   Listen to Game 3 match-ups here, and vote by commenting below before 9pm on Sunday.    Also stay tuned a big LTD announcement, coming Monday.  And now, Game 2 results:

Hello Sunshine (Super Furry Animals) defeat Out in the Street (Bruce Springsteen), 92-89.    The Super Furry Animals pick up their first LTD music tournament win, evening the score against the Boss.

Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones) slugs it out against Card Cheat (Clash), 130.1-108.7.   Midnight Mike turned to one of the Stones’ masterpieces to even the series.   Now both coaches turn to #1 hits to get the job done in Game 3.

Driftin’ Blues (Sam Cooke) stormed back very late to beat Suffragette City (David Bowie), 101-93.5.  As in every music tournament, every vote counts. Grant is not messing around with his Game 3 choice, by the way.

Song Remains the Same (Led Zeppelin) takes out Fade Away and Radiate (Blondie), 90-81.5.   Led Zeppelin leads the series 2-0.  Blondie has its back against the wall now, and is revving things up with Sunday Girl.

I’m sorry Gmo, I love the Boss, but this didn’t do it for me. Midnight Spin does a good cover of this though.

  3. These Bones (Super Furry Animals) vs. It’s So Hard to Be a Saint in the City (live) (Bruce Springsteen) 5/6.5
I hadn’t heard this Springsteen song before. I wasn’t crazy about the sax interludes in the middle, but it really started getting good around the 3.5 minute mark.

Should I Stay or Should I Go (Clash) vs. Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 5/7.5

That’s Where It’s At (Sam Cooke) vs. Under Pressure (David Bowie) x/x
Dang it, Under Pressure is a big gun!

Sunday Girl (Blondie) vs. Living Loving Maid (Led Zeppelin) 8/5.5
I really like this Blondie! Sometime about it makes me feel like summer.

It’s So Hard to Be a Saint in the City (live) (Bruce Springsteen) 6.5

I almost want to apologize for not scoring Saint higher. The energy is amazing, but I don’t know the base song and its really hard to follow anything about the song, musically or lyrically, other than the energy. It might just be me, but something about These Bones sounded Beach Boy-ish, and i was definitely liking it.

Should I Stay or Should I Go (Clash) 7.5
Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 9

Damn, better and better. I wish this weren’t a first round matchup so i didn’t vote against the Clash.

    That’s Where It’s At (Sam Cooke) 7
    Under Pressure (David Bowie) 10

On the songs, this is a no question. I’m not in love with Under Pressure being here, since in my mind its a Queen song, not a Bowie song, but regardless, the song is fucking amazing. I want this one to go 7 games – Lindsay is pulling out some really cool Sam Cooke songs i’ve never heard and i want to make sure that whatever happens i get to hear as many as I can.

Living Loving Maid (Led Zeppelin) #

Hey- I think these all go to 7 games guaranteed. It’s just that if it’s over sooner, you don’t have to waste all your reserve material and you’re free to play whatever you want. Which means more deep cuts and stuff you’ve never heard if it ends soon, while more number one singles if it drags out.

Should I Stay or Should I Go (Clash) 8.75
Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 8.25

Awesome matchup, both are great songs but the Clash gets the slight edge here.

    That’s Where It’s At (Sam Cooke) 6.5
    Under Pressure (David Bowie) 8.5

    Sunday Girl (Blondie) 5

The SFA work when it’s sunny out. It’s a blue sky day and it made me happy. Sometimes a good song can sound like a REALLY good song under certain circumstances but I think that’s a part of what makes music so special. I agree with everything Adrock said about Saint.

Should I Stay or Should I Go (Clash) 6
Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 7
If I hadn’t listened to these through again, I would have blindly scored them both a lot higher. Surprised (and a little disappointed) to hear them both sounding pretty dated.

    That’s Where It’s At (Sam Cooke) 7
    Under Pressure (David Bowie) 10
Under Pressure is so solid, iconic and nostalgic but, unlike the two tracks above, never comes close to sounding dated. The breakdown at 2:55 is incredible. Last time I gave Sam Cooke a low score, I was accused of having no soul which was…well……I don’t know what that was. Anyway, this is definitely my favourite of the SC’s so far by a very long way.

    Sunday Girl (Blondie) 5
Living Loving Maid (Led Zeppelin) 6

These Bones (Super Furry Animals) vs. It’s So Hard to Be a Saint in the City (live) (Bruce Springsteen) = x to x

Never mention money, some things happen for free

Should I Stay or Should I Go (Clash) vs. Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) = 4 to 7.5

Unfortunately, this, along with Rock the Casbah, is my least favorite Clash song. I don’t know if there’s another song like “Paint in Black.” Good lord! This song is from 1966! I had no idea, I think I always placed it in the 70s. I think of the mid 60s and I think of the Small Faces and Motown, then to learn this tune came out around the same time just helps remind one how mind bending that whole time must have been.

That’s Where It’s At (Sam Cooke) vs. Under Pressure (David Bowie) = 6.5 to 9

I have been thoroughly impressed with all of the Sam Cooke selections thus far – he’s someone to which I’ve never given much thought. The guitars sound very Motown-y, in a good way. Unfortunately its up against the song its up against.

Sunday Girl (Blondie) vs. Living Loving Maid (Led Zeppelin) = 7.5 to 5

I like the post-punk pop songs of Blondie like this best, as opposed to the disco-y influenced stuff. This is the second Blondie song posted that has a nice, subtle ending separate from the rest of the song. Its nice. Big Zeppelin fan but just never grooved to this song, though it gets some points for the little funky breaks. I think I’ve been spelling “Zeppelin” as “Zepplin” my entire life.

  8. Mike says:

    These Bones: 6,
cool instrumentation and songwriting, singer doesn’t get me to the next level.

    Saint In The City: 9.4
one of the best recorded shows ever. this version is prob the reason why my band covers this song from time to time. check out these PIMP SUITS! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAvolRT3sX4

Should I Stay Or Should I Go: X

    Paint It Black: X

This first round matchup is turning out to be as good as I hoped it would.

    That’s Where It’s At: 7.
Sam could sing the ingredients on a can of soup and earn a 7. Unfortunately this song matchup is like using a soulful butter knife to fight in a nuclear war.

    Under Pressure: 10.
Heard it on shuffle twenty minutes before I sat down to vote. it’s unstoppable.

    Sunday Girl: 5.
Just didn’t get it done for me, and the French didn’t do it any favors. “Hanging on the Telephone” will get an 8 from me, minimum, FYI.

    Living Loving: 8.9
They should include a shot of Jagermeister for free anytime someone plays this on a jukebox. Zeppelin at their most fun.

  9. chrisroomba says:

I love that we’ve gone to the other band having home games. Is this a 2-3-2 format, or is it going to be 2-2-1-1-1?

These Bones (Super Furry Animals) vs. It’s So Hard to Be a Saint in the City (live) (Bruce Springsteen): 4.5/7
Super Furry Animals have an interesting sound. Unfortunately, I’m not very interested. Sorry. I’ve heard absolutely none of their songs until this week. Now it’s 3. I’m going to keep it at whatever this tournament puts it at. I can’t imagine them going deep with music like this, is that sad? Clarence was working it for Springsteen. RIP.

Should I Stay or Should I Go (Clash) vs. Paint It Black (Rolling Stones): 7/9
Paint it Black is one of my favorite songs. This was a strong match up.

That’s Where It’s At (Sam Cooke) vs. Under Pressure (David Bowie): 6/10
Sam Cooke sounds really good. Can Under Pressure be considered a David Bowie Song? Queen lists it as featuring David Bowie, and Bowie lists it as featuring Queen. I don’t care. It’s my ringtone. It’s such a great song. It’s the shit.

Sunday Girl (Blondie) vs. Living Loving Maid (Led Zeppelin): 5/6.5
Something about John Bonham’s work usually gets me into or out of a Zeppelin song. In this case, I’m in.

  10. Joe Denson says:

    SFA- 3
    The Boss- 6

The Clash- 1 ( This is my least favorite Clash song, and it’s nails on a chalk board for me).
    The Stones- 1 (ditto)

Sam Cooke 8 This song reeks of sex. I don’t understand how this doesn’t move folks, but, then again this is the beauty of music
Bowie/ Mercury 9 Great goddamn song. Just beautiful, fragile, so awesome. Beautiful harmonies, and melody. I hated that this song faced “That’s Where its At” Such is life.

    Blondie 5
Zeppelin 7 Again this band is a favorite by mine so they’ll be getting votes of mine for awhile.

These Bones (Super Furry Animals) vs. It’s So Hard to Be a Saint in the City (live) (Bruce Springsteen) 8.5 to 4.5
This SFA song is great! So happy! I have never heard this song but I could see it being a go-to for a pick-me-up. It totally helped with my shitty mood. As for Bruce, I am ready to love him but just haven’t been feeling these picks… This song sounded 90s in a way that’s not for me. Kinda… Blues Traveller on speed?

Should I Stay or Should I Go (Clash) vs. Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 7.3 to 8.5
This is one of the only Stones songs I really like, facing up against a Clash song that I have an ambivalence towards. I had a real love/hate relationship with it in high school, but it’s moved more to the love side.

That’s Where It’s At (Sam Cooke) vs. Under Pressure (David Bowie) 8 to 9.5
This is my favorite Sam Cooke pick so far. I also think of Under Pressure as a Queen song, but it’s truly a 50/50 collaboration, which is probably one reason it’s such a great song.

Sunday Girl (Blondie) vs. Living Loving Maid (Led Zeppelin) # #

  12. Eileen says:

These Bones (Super Furry Animals) vs. It’s So Hard to Be a Saint in the City (live) (Bruce Springsteen) 5.5 to 3.0

Should I Stay or Should I Go (Clash) vs. Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 7.5 to 8.5

That’s Where It’s At (Sam Cooke) vs. Under Pressure (David Bowie) 6.5 to 5.0

Sunday Girl (Blondie) vs. Living Loving Maid (Led Zeppelin) 7.0 to 6.5

  13. The Progenitor says:

These Bones (Super Furry Animals) vs. It’s So Hard to Be a Saint in the City (live) (Bruce Springsteen) 5.75 to 2.5 This was awful Boss. SFA dropped a 0.25 with a rather weak ending.

Should I Stay or Should I Go (Clash) vs. Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 6.0 to 8.5 Clash wasn’t bad but Stones were great on this cut.

That’s Where It’s At (Sam Cooke) vs. Under Pressure (David Bowie) 5.75 to 6.0 Not great Cooke and not great Bowie but he gets the nod because the song is so good. Should have been Bowie doing the background and Freddie up front.

Sunday Girl (Blondie) vs. Living Loving Maid (Led Zeppelin) 6.5 to 6.6 Better Blondie but still not much. Gotta go with the better talent.

  14. Jenn says:

    Bruce – 5.5
    SFA – 2.5

    The Clash – 4.5
    Rolling Stones – 3.5

    Sam Cooke – 7
    David Bowie – 8.5

    Blondie – 4
    Led Zepellin – 5.5
