Spell-off Winners
Alright, Day 1 is in the books, 25 voters participated, and we have our first four victors that have clawed their way into the Round of 128! However, it should be noted that scores are looking prettty low. I guess that’s to be expected with a round this early, but not one of our winners broke a 6 average. However, a win is a win, so without further ado….
CCR’s “I Put A Spell On You” over Nina Simone’s, 155.9-135.9. Somewhere in Silver Spring, Amy is mad that she didn’t vote, but even a hammer couldn’t save the jazz queen on this one. CCR also claims high score with a not so dazzling 5.87 average.
“When Doves Cry” out-Princes “Darling Nikki,” 118.15-109.5. Quindon Tarver squeaks out a win over the Foo Fighters here. You don’t even want to know these averages. We’ll see if the R+J track can pick up some slack in its next match.

Mindy's got plenty to smile about with her big win
Mindy Smith out-“Jolenes” Zac Brown Band, 138.8-135.1. In the closest match of the day, the Ray cover doesn’t have enough to get past the Dolly cover.
Shocker Special: Chris Cornell’s “Billie Jean” outdoes Fallout Boy’s “Beat It,” 142.6-130.8. The acoustic, throaty solo wins voters over in a stronger way than the punky, fast-paced rock ode. Maybe this doesn’t seem like a shocker to you, but I’m surprised.
That’s all for now folks, see you soon and keep on voting!
The Michael Jackson covers turned out to be closer than I ever expected. Though my personal tastes tend toward a little fast-paced punk, and other voters did not, I can respect that. Though my nomination has been defeated, it got a better show than it looked like it would originally.
I weep that I did not vote for my beloved Foo. Drat.
