PCT: The Sweet Sixteen Continues

omg!

Prepare yourselves for more nail-biters, heartbreaks, tears of joy, and mind-blowing outcomes.  Or just enjoy listening to some gosh-darn good music.

Votes for this round are due on Thursday, August 25th at 8 pm EDT.  Have a listen here, share your reactions, and quantify your opinions on a 1-10 scale via the comment section below.

To make it this far is a huge accomplishment for these songs.  Now, these songs are no strangers to accomplishment.  Somebody to Love made it to #2 in the UK and #13 on the Billboard chart.  Clint Eastwood was a #4 hit in the UK.  Landslide hit #10 on

who, me?

the Adult Contemporary chart and inspired a hit Smashing Pumpkins cover.  Crabbuckit was named the 37th greatest Canadian song of all time by CBC Radio in 2005 (not to discount Crabbuckit, but it was competing against Celine Dion…) and its video hit #1 on the MuchMusic Countdown.  Midnight Train to Georgia was a #1 single on R&B and pop charts and received a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance.   A Kiss to Build a Dream On made it to the Pop 20 chart.  I’ve Been Loving You Too Long was a #2 R&B single and was ranked #110 on Rolling Stone‘s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

But which 4 will be able to add the People’s Choice Tournament quarter-finals to their claim to fame?  You decide…

Copy, paste, vote:

  2. Ah the Sweet Sixteen, when I just start saying anything that comes to mind:

#3 Somebody to Love (Live in Montreal) (Queen): 6.5
#14 Clint Eastwood (The Gorillaz): 6.3

    Good run, Gorillaz.

    #6 Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) 11
    #11 Crabbuckit (K-os) 8

Some days you just need a Landslide. I know we don’t do 11’s.

#7 Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips) 10.5
#10 A Kiss to Build a Dream On (Louis Armstrong) 5.5

Happiness. Yes, I still know we don’t do things above 10.

    #2 Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits) 4
#15 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) 6

See “Nice, Wouldn’t It Be” filed in the archived Beach Boys folder for explanation. Seriously though, this is why romantic songs don’t win tournaments. Because when you’re in a good mood, they’ll do well, and when you’re in a bad mood, they’ll do poorly. Those are the sorts of differences that become (or at least should become) more pronounced this deep into it. (Yes, I was much more high on life this time last week when I gave R&J a 10- that was before my train wreck of a promising Saturday night date followed by my Monday and Tuesday “feel like death” with a 102 fever days. Sorry nomination, but I have been consistently subjective with your scores and will continue to be so. Because if I wasn’t and was a system gamer or a hammer voter without thinking about how I actually felt about the song right now, then there’s no point to this.)

  3. chrisroomba says:

I’ve added my scores from before the rerack, just for fluidity.
#3 Somebody to Love (Live in Montreal) (Queen)-9.99 (FREDDIE!!!)
#14 Clint Eastwood (The Gorillaz)-2 (I really don’t like this song, the more I hear it. The rhymes aren’t that good, and the sample stinks. If all is right with the world, Freddie and co. will slay Gorillaz, and make Clint’s day).

#6 Landslide (Fleetwood Mac)-1 (Loathe you!)
    #11 Crabbuckit (K-os)-5 (better)

#7 Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips)-7.5
#10 A Kiss to Build a Dream On (Louis Armstrong)-2

#2 Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits)-10 (Too bad Queen and Dire Straits have to square off before the final)
#15 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding)-2

  4. Anti-hammer says:

Next tournament you guys have to do something about hammer-happy voters. A seven, eight or nine point differential can effectively negate half a dozen thoughtful votes. A lot of us labor over our scores and take them very seriously. It’s hard to imagine that certain voters really hate half the music out there and love other half. It’s fucking obnoxious and I’m damn tired of seeing it ruin contests that would otherwise be close. Maybe we need to start employing a standard deviation method where score differentials outside 2SD are thrown out. Otherwise this is just a waste of fucking time.

To make my point, and because I’m not wed to any of the remaining songs, I’m going to undo Chris Roomba’s scores with my own (no offense to the songs I reverse hammer in the process):

#3 Somebody to Love (Live in Montreal) (Queen) 2
#14 Clint Eastwood (The Gorillaz) 9.999

    #6 Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) 5
    #11 Crabbuckit (K-os) 1

#7 Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips) 2
#10 A Kiss to Build a Dream On (Louis Armstrong) 7.5

    #2 Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits) 2
#15 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) 10

    • G says:

with the exception of the “take the very serious” part regarding voting, I whole heartedly agree with Mr Anti-Hammer. It’s funny to hammer here or there, but we should all remember that saying that your opinion is that much more valid than everyone else’s opinion every time seems to be simply gaming matches for yourself, which you could do in your own tournament…. by yourself. As far as I recall, there’s nothing to win here by your songs winning, correct?… except knowing you f’d the process for everyone and perhaps even diminished their fun. [Now, of course, there are definitely some 10-1 hammers needed, and really, they can add to the excitement as well.] And this is no way goes against Mr. Roomba personally; it’s just a general sentiment that I’ve been feeling this entire tournament and it seemed like a nice opportunity to air it. If the hammering continues, I’m just going to vote 10-1 on everything and make it a purely binary system, destroying the shades of gradation for all the songs, which makes this tourney different. aahhhhhhh….. goodness, ranting feels nice sometimes. Ok- back to it!

    • chrisroomba says:

That was pretty undemocratic. Sure, my scoring was lopsided, but I’ve been scoring those songs pretty much the same the entire tournament (give or take a about 1.5, depending on mood). Go back and check it out, and you’ll see that it is very true. Additionally, I made a clear statement of what each score-band had with it when I scored a song a certain way (I believe this was back in the Round of 256; probably the 3rd or 4th time I voted). Remaining true to that, I’ve scored using that system in each round of the tournament in which I have been involved. In each round, I have seen a number of songs I actually enjoy removed from the tournament while others move on, and I’ve voted with the same personal scoring system.

Essentially, what you’ve attempted is to state that I don’t matter. How rude of you, to do such a thing. The rest of us are scoring songs, but you scored me. You took away my rights of free will, and imposed your values on me, my thoughts and my opinions.

That may have worked in high school, or even with your clique today. But I’ll be honest, it doesn’t make me feel badly (except for those taking their free time to run this tournament, and have to deal with this immaturity [if those people think I’m unfair, please email me, you have the address from when I post, and I’d be glad to remove myself if you all think I’m swaying things]). There is no way I’m going to score something higher just because of some cyber bullying. If I truly don’t like a song, I’ll score it accordingly. I’m going to maintain true to myself.

Considering I didn’t nominate any of the songs in this tournament, I’ve just been having fun. That was the point of all of this, wasn’t it? People need to relax.

And, as a word to the wise, don’t try to make yourself out to be the righter of wrongs, and eliminate a person’s honest opinion. That was truly obnoxious.

      How dare you, sir.

      • Danno says:

As the hammer has my namesake, and I have access to all the data, I might as well pipe in here. As much as we do tend to discourage Danno Hammering just for the sake of getting “your song” to win, on the surface it may look like ChrisRoomba is kind of being a dick with his voting in this round, but true to his statement above, the man is being nothing but consistent. He has given Somebody to Love 9+ every time. Romeo and Juliet, 10 every time. For the songs he doesn’t love, he shows some fatigue, but I think that’s normal for just about everyone at this point in the game. Don’t believe me? http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6736831/LivingTheDream/ChrisRoomba.png

I give these hammers a seal of approval.

With that said, similar to my post way back when about how when a long song won’t end you just hate it more and more…if you kind of didn’t like a song 4 rounds ago, you are likely to HATE it now and you’re gonna give it a crappy score. Hammers are going to happen. If someone else’s hammer changes your opinion of a song (in a downward direction) while you are listening to it, that is no different than if someone said something profound and made you see a song in a different light so you voted it up…so reverse hammers are just as legit.

BUT SWEET ZOMBIE JESUS RELAX PEOPLE!! 🙂 If someone is consistently seriously abusing the system, we have all these numbers in one place…we will see and and we will do something about it. If you are going to get bent out of shape over these comments, take some advice from my friends The Offspring (substituting any references for lyrics/albums/listening with comments/posts/reading): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5UvuFI462c

Arguably the greatest rock vocalist of all time will beat pretty much everyone. Good run, Gorillaz, but you didn’t stand a chance.

    #6 Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) – 6
    #11 Crabbuckit (K-os) – 9.5

Never really got into that version of Landslide. I can see the lawnchairs with the AARP crowd rocking out on a PBS special. You know, the ones where they awkwardly focus on the older white lady gently swaying to the music as if any other movement would risk a broken hip.

#7 Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips) – 3

    Romeo And Juliet–8.8
I’ve Been Loving You Too Long–5

  16. Danno says:

    Somebody To Love– 10
    Clint Eastwood– 7
I think Somebody to Love is the only song in this tournament that I’m not experiencing voting (listening) fatigue on. It just get better and better. With that said, although Clint Eastwood in it’s entirety is starting to get a little tired for me, I can listen to the opening beat/bass line forever.

    Landslide– 8
    Crabbuckit– 6.5
In general Landslide has been fading for me, but tonight it held it’s ground. Guess I’m in that kind of mood. I do still start air/lap-drumming this beat whenever it comes on.

    Midnight Train To Georgia– 3
A Kiss To Build A Dream On- 8
Midnight train pulled away a few rounds ago for me. There are few times when I’m not on some level in the mood for some Louie Armstrong. The song is wearing on me, but still enjoyable.

    Romeo And Juliet– 7.5
I’ve Been Loving You Too Long– 6

Also, dammnnn, the Danno Hammers are flying

  17. Lolly says:

Somebody to Love (Live in Montreal) (Queen) – 8.5

    #6 Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) – 10
    #11 Crabbuckit (K-os) – 7.5

#7 Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips) – 9
    #10 A Kiss to Build a Dream On (Louis Armstrong) – 10

    #2 Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits) – 6
#15 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) – 9

  18. G says:

#3 Somebody to Love (Live in Montreal) (Queen) 4.5 [I don’t even put this in the same ballpark as ’39, BR, or Under Pressure.]
#14 Clint Eastwood (The Gorillaz) 4.5 [kinda forgot it was playing so not bad.]

#6 Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) 6.8 [I mean, it’s an exceptional song. Rarely in mood for it, but know that it’s good. I think this acoustic version works better for the tournament, but I do prefer record version for non-tourney play.]
#11 Crabbuckit (K-os) 7.5 [Considering this is a genre I typically run from, the fact that I like this means that it’s really impressive.]

#7 Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips) 9.8 [heartfelt lead with funny and self-aware background vocals? hit.]
#10 A Kiss to Build a Dream On (Louis Armstrong) 6.8 [ feeling louis]

#2 Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits) 10 [Knofler’s guitar work on this track is absolutely amazing. Jesus. One of the greatest guitarist ever. It’s not easy playing that clean and subtle.]
#15 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) 6.8 [love this usually but meh’d me tonight. think it’s probably time to retire.]

  19. janos marton says:

Wow, who else is fired up for these quarterfinals?!

#3 Somebody to Love (Live in Montreal) (Queen): 9
#14 Clint Eastwood (The Gorillaz): 7.6

    #6 Landslide (Fleetwood Mac): 7.4
    #11 Crabbuckit (K-os): 6.5

#7 Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips): 9.2
I give Gladys a 9.6, but the Pips bring it down a notch.
#10 A Kiss to Build a Dream On (Louis Armstrong): 6.8

    #2 Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits): 9.5
#15 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding): 6
Ok, isn’t this the same song as “Change Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke, except about a girl instead of the civil rights movement?

    k-os keeps growing on me.

#7 Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips): 6.5
#10 A Kiss to Build a Dream On (Louis Armstrong): 6
Love both of these and would be happy to see either move on.

    #2 Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits): 7
#15 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding): 7.5
Last tournament Dire Straits couldn’t make it out of the group stage. Now Romeo & Juliet is on its way to the finals. Surprised.

    • janos marton says:

Indeed. To recap, since most of ya’ll weren’t around yet:
Walk of Life lost in the Round of 512 to Ring of Fire
Sultans of Swing lost in the Round of 128 to Wavin’ Flag

Both worthy adversaries, it should be noted.

  22. Anne S. says:

#3 Somebody to Love (Live in Montreal) (Queen) 6.5
#14 Clint Eastwood (The Gorillaz) 7.5
Not quite getting sick of the opening to Gorillaz or the energy of Queen live yet.

    #6 Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) 9.9
    #11 Crabbuckit (K-os) 7
Little sister starts her first year of college tomorrow, feeling a little nostalgic…giving Landslide an extra boost. Crabbuckit is still very good too.

#7 Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips) 6.8
#10 A Kiss to Build a Dream On (Louis Armstrong) 8
    I love Louis.

    #2 Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits) 5
#15 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) 3
I just can’t listen to Otis. Sometimes when I really listen to the lyrics to Romeo and Juliet they really creep me out.

  23. Bday says:

#3 Somebody to Love (Live in Montreal) (Queen) 5
#14 Clint Eastwood (The Gorillaz) 7.5

This live version of Somebody to Love doesn’t do it for me.

    #6 Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) 10
    #11 Crabbuckit (K-os) 8

Landslide (and particularly this version) is one of my favorite songs, but it seems like there’s a lot of people with the opposite opinion today.

#7 Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips) 5
#10 A Kiss to Build a Dream On (Louis Armstrong) 2

Someone said the Pips bring this song down, and I agree. However, I haven’t liked Kiss to Build a Dream On this whole tournament, and I see no reason to change my vote now.

    #2 Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits) 9
#15 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) 2

In regards to the Anti-Hammer rule, I truly dislike I’ve Been Loving You Too Long, yet love Romeo&Juliet, so I don’t see why I should increase a song’s score that I hate, and decrease the score of a song I love if I truly feel that way, just so I don’t negate 5 other people’s votes. People who score the songs close are basically saying to me they don’t care really either way which song wins, so let someone else decide. I agree if for every matchup a person scores 10-1 or 9-2, their scores should be disregarded, but eliminating all that are outside of 2SD doesn’t make much sense either if someone really feels that way.

it’s fine. it’s a good song. i just don’t care about it at all.
    #14 Clint Eastwood (The Gorillaz) – 6.5
    similar. extra point for originality.

    #6 Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) – 5
similar to above. it’s lovely, but i spaced out after 10 seconds.
    #11 Crabbuckit (K-os) – 8
    like this groove.

#7 Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips) – 3
    i just find this… cheesy.
    #10 A Kiss to Build a Dream On (Louis Armstrong) – 4.5
i expected to give louis an embarrassingly low score, but i was feeling it today.

    #2 Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits) – 5.8
sick of this already, but it’s better than otis.
#15 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) – 4.7

i would also like to share my 2 cents about the “hammer”, but i probably shouldn’t let it interfere with the work deadline i’ve got… so i will have to get back to you all on that.

  25. #3 Somebody to Love (Live in Montreal) (Queen) -8
    #14 Clint Eastwood (The Gorillaz) – 4.5

    #6 Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) 10

This day of songs is mostly easy for me, except the couple that are really hard.

#3 Somebody to Love (Live in Montreal) (Queen)
    #14 Clint Eastwood (The Gorillaz)
Easy. 9/5 I have never really cared for this song by the Gorillaz. I’m never happy to have it stuck in my head. On the other hand, I often will sing Somebody to Love in the shower, much to the chagrin of my 14 half empty bottles of shampoo and things who get to be my lucky audience.

    #6 Landslide (Fleetwood Mac)
    #11 Crabbuckit (K-os)
    Easy. 9.75/4 Stevie Nicks? YES.

#7 Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips)
#10 A Kiss to Build a Dream On (Louis Armstrong)
Harder. I love Gladys Knight & the Pips. Midnight Train to Georgia is one of my most favorite songs ever. But I also love Louis. There are so many memories of my very first beau wrapped up in listening to Kiss to Build a Dream on, too. awwww. Ultimately, though, I think Gladys wins for me — and if I could have my own set of Pips to follow me around and repeat everything I said in a lovely harmony, I would be a much happier lady. 10/8.75

#2 Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits)
#15 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding)
    Hardest. 9.5/9.75

find.me.somebody to loo-oove. find.me.somebody to loo-ooove, find me somebody loo-ooove. haha that gets stuck in my head all the time, and I likes it. I also still enjoy hearing Freddie talk at the end. Clint is really getting annoying.

    #6 Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) – 10
    #11 Crabbuckit (K-os) – 8.3
This is tough. Crabbuckit was new to me in this tournament and I have added it to my running playlist, and I am pretty sure it is making me faster and happier. BUT. Seriously, Landslide is epic and super emotionally evocative, in the best way.

#7 Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips) – 9
    #10 A Kiss to Build a Dream On (Louis Armstrong) – 6.5
I wonder what it would feel like to rather live in his world, than live without him in mine. Hmm. That’s some powerful shit. A lot more powerful than prurient fantasizing (I love Louis in general and while both songs sound good, AKTBADO has pretty lame lyrics).

    #2 Romeo & Juliet (Dire Straits) – 9
#15 I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (Otis Redding) – 9.5
Oh bittersweet love songs. You make my heart hurt. I’m not sure if that is good or bad, but I like these songs a lot.

Jeesh – it feels a little tense out there in music tournament world. Hammers, reverse hammers, anti-hammers, what have you… I could care less how other people score. For those of you who do care about high score differences, I guess you are lucky that Crabbuckit and Landslide faced off against each other this time around, otherwise I would have been a culprit of dropping two hammers. I wouldn’t be upset if I never heard either of those songs again, but alas, one of them will prevail. I guess that’s just the way the cookie crumbles.
