Round of 128: Division O

Hope everyone’s week is off to a good start. Here are the big questions for Division N:

1. Can anyone stop Romeo and Juliette? The Dire Straits juggernaut put up monster numbers in the the Round 256, and nearly 20% of voters think it will go on the way. It isn’t expected to have much trouble against Robyn, but it’ll be worth keeping an eye on the average scores in the rest of the division.

2. Will voters respond to a song about not being able to find your way home or a song about the place you wind up at 4am when you’re not quite ready to go home?

3. Can Ziggy Marley pull off the tournament success that has eluded Bob and Damien?

4. Is “Home” a contender for “Best ‘Home’ of the Peoples Choice Tournament”? Let’s see if it can pull off as high an average as Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, or more importantly, a better score than an unleashed Joe Cocker.

Listen to all the tunes here or on the little jukebox, and vote by commenting below by 8pm (EST) on Wednesday, July 27.

Update: Apparently the Uncle Tupelo song is down, so listen on youtube here.

And here they are, your friendly pastables:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) v.#8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn

#4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) v. #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) v. #7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley

#3 Home (Marc Broussard) v. #6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker)

Humble Brag: If this comes out poorly typed, it’s because I’m trying to post for the first time using the ChromeBook I got for free last week at Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon: http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/video/joshua-topolsky-part-2-7-18-11/1341468

The keyboard is more restrictive than I’d like.

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) v.#8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn: 10/2
Robyn you’ve been slayed by the Sultans of Swing.

#4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) v. #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega: 5.5/4
I love me some diner food. I didn’t realize this song was entitled Tom’s Diner. It’s the first Diner that I wish would go away.

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) v. #7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley: 7/6.5
Ziggy you ain’t your daddy, and the Uncle’s got your number, but that was catchy.

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) v. #6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker):3.5/4.5
I’m not enamored with either of these.

  2. Danno says:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) 8
    #8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn 7
It disturbs me how much I’m into Hang with Me tonight.

#4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) 4
    #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega 2

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) 4
#7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley 2

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) 8
#6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) 6.5

  3. Ryan Quinnelly says:

awesome. love the new grooveshark player, way easier. Thanks!

  4. Man behind the counter says:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) 8 v.#8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn 5

    #4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) 7 v. #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega 9
Makes me want a Broadway shake from Tom’s.

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) 4 v. #7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley 6
    Ali Boombaye!

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) 4 v. #6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) 6

According to Chevy Chase, John Belushi was a big Joe Cocker fan even though he mercilessly skewered him on Saturday Night Live. This video is kind of amazing:

  5. The Catholic says:

Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) ~ 3
Hang With Me (Robyn) ~ 1
Dire Straits sounded like a half-assed Bob Dylan ripoff. Robyn was just synthed out and terrible. People are into this kind of music? Blech!

Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) ~ 8.5
    Tom’s Diner (Suzanne Vega) ~ 8.6
Wow, what a breath of fresh air after those first two!

Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) ~ 4.9
Good Old Days (Ziggy Marley) ~ 10
Still Be Around is ok. Underwhelming a bit though… nice instruments, not bad lyrics, mediocre vocals.
I can’t conceive of how a person couldn’t like Good Old Days. Its an extremely well made song about something we should all aspire to: living the good old days now. You’d have to be a cynic of the highest order to hate on this song.

    Home (Marc Broussard) ~
I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) ~

  6. The Catholic says:

    Oops, missed two of them.

    Home (Marc Broussard) ~ 9
I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) ~ 7
Home is awesome. Love that bluesy sound!
Joe Cocker was ok, but his cover just didn’t have the soul that Home did.

  7. colincolinhunt says:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) 7.5
    #8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn 7

#4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) 6.5
    #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega 5.5

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) 6.5
#7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley 7
    Dug Zigggggggggggy today.

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) 6
#6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) 4

  8. Mark B says:

Clearly, between the two of us, The Catholic and I represent the full spectrum of opinion!

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) – 9
    #8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn – 8
Robyn – “most critically acclaimed popstar with a tragic lack of commercial success in the traditional sense” Award? Yes. A bad review for the Body Talk EP series and the full album doesn’t exist: http://www.metacritic.com/music/body-talk/critic-reviews . This, alas, is not her best but is still a shame to be up against Dire Straits. It would have trampled on everything else in this division for me.

#4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) – 4
    #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega – 5.5

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) – 6.5
#7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley – 2

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) – 2
    #6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) – 5

    • janos marton says:

This is “Show Me Love” Robyn? Now I know that the hit single is often an unfair sample of the album, but that song was pretty cheesy….

Also, on Wikipedia it says “Show Me Love” by Robyn (not to be confused with “Show Me Love” by Robin S.). This actually confused me more. I mean, just google it yourself. Wild ride.

  9. NatalieG says:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) – 8.5
    #8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn – 4

#4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) – 5.3
    #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega – 5

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) – 7
#7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley – 6

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) – 5
#6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) 5.9

  10. The Progenitor says:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) v.#8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn 8.0 to 6.0

    #4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) v. #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega 7.0 to 5.5

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) v. #7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley 5.0 to 6.0

#3 Home (Marc Broussard) v. #6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) 9.8 to 9.9 This one was complicated. Love Home. This is by far the best of the Home songs in the PCT. But Cocker………………….is political.

  11. Eileen says:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) v.#8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn 8.0 to 7.0

    #4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) v. #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega 7.5 to 4.0

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) v. #7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley 4.0 to 5.5

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) v. #6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) 9.0 to 10.0

  12. janos marton says:

    Me and C
#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) v.#8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn
    Me: 7.8 : 4
C: 6.2 : 4.3 Dire Straits were boring, but nice. Robyn was straight annoying.

#4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) v. #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega
Me: 8.2 : 6.1 “Cristina is so gonna lose her ‘Lover of All Things’ title.”
    C: 4.5: 4.7 “If the song’s weren’t such shit, that would help.”

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) v. #7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley
    Me: 7.6 : 7.7 Very tough.
    C: 5.5 : 6.8

#3 Home (Marc Broussard) v. #6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker)
Me: 5.7 : 5.3 They songs both try really hard, and I applaud them for that. The actual pleasure of listening to them was probably lower reflected in the scores.
    C: 6.8 : 7.5

I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) 4

  15. aiko says:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) v.#8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn 8.7/8
I missed Robyn the first time around. This is in the vein of the sort of catchy eurotrash dance pop that I’ve loved since the 5th grade. I’ll check out her other stuff. If you like her, you might very much like LIGHTS.

#4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) v. #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega 2/8
Tom’s dinner reminds me a little of a Barbara Pym novel, where it’s just an unremarkable little slice of life without pathos or tragedy. That’s rare enough in literature, and almost unheard of in pop music.

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) v. #7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley 7.7/7
Wasn’t expecting to like marley at all, that was a nice surprise.

#3 Home (Marc Broussard) v. #6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) 7.8/2.8

  16. Meghan says:

Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) 7
(Hang With Me ) Robyn 6

Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) 5
    (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega 8

Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) 7.5
(Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley 6

    Home (Marc Broussard) 7.5
I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) 8.5

  17. Astrid says:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) v.#8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn 6.8:2

#4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) v. #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega 5:1

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) v. #7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley 7:4

#3 Home (Marc Broussard) v. #6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) 9:5

  18. nataliebabij says:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) – 9
    that’s some lovely morning guitar.
    #8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn – 2.5

#4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) – 9.3
oohh, even lovelier morning guitar. and i love winwood’s vocals.
    #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega – 3.5
    can’t handle the repitition today

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) – 10
even more nice morning guitar, hooray!
#7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley – 8.2
makes me wanna dance in the sunnnnnnnnnnnnn! oof, this was one of my favorite new discoveries of the first round, up against one of my all-time favorite songs. it goes downhill for me around 2:50, though, so the score will stay below 9.

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) – 8.8
nice, bluesy, soulful. missed this one in the first round. totally digging it.
    #6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) – 6.2

    solid division!

  19. Weird mood, so here we go:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) 6.5
    #8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn 6.5

What’s the phrase Adrock and Meghan use? Damn my tournament purity or something? Something weird just happened. I’ll blame Twin Peaks, have you guys seen that show? IT IS SO WEIRD YET AWESOME.

#4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) 7
    #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega 5

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) 10
#7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley 7.8

That was perfect. Ziggy was really good too, but that couplet with Bibles, hardwood floors, and mornings hit it out of the park for me this time around.

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) 7
#6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) 7.3

I knew that gospel part of Home was going to start getting on my nerves. I miss Nina Simone, but Cocker’s got some feeling here.

  20. zd says:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) v.#8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn – 8/4

    #4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) v. #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega – 6/6

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) v. #7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley – 8.5/6

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) v. #6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) – 8/8.5

  21. Anne S. says:

This is an excellent division. I pretty much wish all these songs could advance, but here it goes…

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) v.#8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn – 8/7
I guess I’m not alone in wanting to thank whoever nominated Robyn. However, Romeo and Juliet is Romeo and Juliet and onward it goes.

    #4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) v. #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega – 6.5/7
I was baking while listening and I’m not sure if that made me like Tom’s Diner a little more than usual.

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) v. #7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley – 6/8.5

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) v. #6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) – 6/7.5

  22. asf says:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) – 8.5

    (Hang With Me ) Robyn – 6.5

Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) – 7.5

    (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega – 8.5

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) – 7.2

(Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley – 6.8

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) – 6.2

I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) – 7.3

  23. Bday says:

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) v.#8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn 7 / 6

    #4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) v. #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega 7 / 6.5

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) v. #7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley 4 / 6

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) v. #6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) 5 / 3

  24. adam says:

Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) v. (Hang With Me ) Robyn = 5.5 to 6
Strangely I was more in the mood for Robyn today than Dire Straits –

Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) v. (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega = 4 to 8

Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) v. (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley = 5 to 3

Home (Marc Broussard) v. I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) = 4.5 to 2

  25. Adrock says:

    I swear I posted this once already… very weird…

#1 Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits) 4
    #8 (Hang With Me ) Robyn 6.5

#4 Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith) 4.5
    #5 (Tom’s Diner) Suzanne Vega 5.3

#2 Still Be Around (Uncle Tupelo) 6.8
#7 (Good Old Days) Ziggy Marley 5.5

    #3 Home (Marc Broussard) 8.5
#6 I Put A Spell On You (Joe Cocker) 7.8
