Apologies for the late post tonight. The team seems to have had a scheduling mixup, so I’m just going to get this one out as quick as possible while we sort out what happened. Sorry for the lack of usual (attempted) wit and random facts!! Grooveshark link here except Van and Sara Bareilles. Youtube link for Van Morrison here and Sara Bareilles here.
Update: We had the wrong version of Fairytale up. See youtube link above if you already voted and have the time to re-listen.

vs. So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) = 6
Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) = 4

Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) = 4
vs. China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) = 5
Thanks for Pasting this list together at the bottom.
Ooh La La (Faces, The)- 8.5 [nice right/left channel split.]
When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) 6.0
Warm Love (Van Morrison) 6.8
So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) 8.0
Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) 8.0 [pre-ska ska horned, country-twang summer-lovin’ song. happy happy tune.]
Fairytale (Sara Bareilles) 6.0 [great singer but this genre’s not my thing.]
Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) 3.5 [Of all the sex pistol’s songs, this one could most easily be in a Disney movie about singing cats.]
China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) 5.5 [jammy. Love me American Beauty.]
#1 Ooh La La (Faces, The) 5.5
#16 When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) 7 Really beautiful… but docked a point and change because it almost put me back to sleep (this happens at 345am in the office)
#8 Warm Love (Van Morrison) 4
#9 So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) 5
I’d say I’m just not in a Van mood these days, but “Baby Please Don’t Go” popped on in my car the other day, and I could not have been happier.
#4 Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) 9.1
#13 Fairytale (Sara Bareilles) 7.5
Well then. After 3 straight slow ones, Here Comes My Baby was damn near perfect. The old man definitely nailed this one. Fairytale usually isn’t right on my target, but it worked well this morning.
#5 Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) 8
#12 China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) 4
Not gonna say Friggin is great music – but it’s fun and conjures terrific drunken memories of college and law school, so it’s almost always going to do right by me (unless I have a hangover…). I had high hopes for China Cat after the photo Danno put up… alas, just not my cup of vodka.
the time on this post makes me sad 😦
Ooh La La (Faces, The) 7.5
When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) 8
Really liked both of these. I guess in the end I’d rather hear When You Say Nothing At All again over Ooh La La.
Warm Love (Van Morrison) 4
So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) 5
Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) 7
Fairytale (Sara Bareilles) 9
Fairytale is my nomination but I really did like Here Comes My Baby. Unfortunately the Fairytale version is not the one I wanted but it seems to be the only one they have on Grooveshark so it’ll have to work. I didn’t realize there were two otherwise I would have specified. oh well!
Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) 5
China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) 4
which version do you want? i can switch it with a version from youtube….
Ooh La La (Faces, The) vs. When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) 6-4
Warm Love (Van Morrison) vs. So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) 5-7.5
Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) vs. Fairytale (Sara Bareilles) 3-6
Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) vs. China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) 3-3
In my opinion, both bands have songs a magnitude better than these two.
Ooh La La (Faces, The) = 9 May I have this dance, Margaret Yang?
vs.When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) = 3
Warm Love (Van Morrison) = 7
vs. So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) = 7
Good match up.
Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) = 5
vs. Fairytale (Sara Bareilles) = 4
Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) = 4
vs. China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) = 6
Ooh La La (Faces, The) = 7.5
vs.When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) = 9
I played WYSNAA with my friend Amy at the spring concert senior year of high school…then I played it again when she was walking down the isle at her wedding…so this song will always rank high for me.
Warm Love (Van Morrison) = 6
vs. So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) = 4.5
Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) = 7
vs. Fairytale (Sara Bareilles) = 6
Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) = 8
vs. China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) = 4
Haha. I was not expecting Friggin in the Riggin at all. Bonus points for the intro.
Fun sidenote: I have swum in the pool pictured above (the one with a car in it).
Nice Shot of Wardo’s pool. Damn drivers from Stoughton.
haha. I was hoping someone would recognize it.
Janos’s scores (pending a Van score):
Faces: 7.2
Kraus: 5
Cohen: 8.9
Van Morrison — I can’t find this song! if you send it to me (or send link) I’ll complete the vote. I really dug this Cohen song, so I do want to vote.
Mavericks- 8.5
Bareilles– 3 almost unlistenable
Sex Pistols- 8.8 ***For the person doing this post – can you look for a better quality version, this sounded very low quality…from “Great Rock n Roll Swindle”
Grateful Dead- 6
At first I was pissed two of my favorite bands were pitted against each other, but the half full view is that the Dead may actually win a matchup! Probably not though. This isn’t one of my 20 favorite Dead songs.
#1 Ooh La La (Faces, The)
kicky, earnest, Dylanesque, but if you’re only going to play three chords, you’ve got to hypnotize me – 4
#16 When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) – 5.5
can’t…. suppress….bias.
#8 Warm Love (Van Morrison) – 7
extra point off for the redundantly repetitive lyric
#9 So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) – 7
#4 Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) – 6.5
nice energy, vocals; too many frills
#13 Fairytale (Sara Bareilles) – 6
my students love her, just too much gloss for my elderly ears.
#5 Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) – 7
awesome arrangement, silly song
#12 China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) – 8
tight, mysterious, fine, if meandering, communal effort, special props to the bassman
#1 Ooh La La (Faces, The) vs. #16 When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss): 4/6
Ooh La La wasn’t good with Rod Stewart. This was worse. Alison Kraus would’ve won this showdown if she sang nothing at all. Even if she doesn’t bring Union Station with her.
#8 Warm Love (Van Morrison) vs. #9 So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen): 5/5
This matchup left me whelmed. Not under, not over. Just whelmed. A lot of songs have been doing that, lately.
#4 Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) vs. #13 Fairytale (Sara Bareilles): 6/6
This could go either way. They were both a bit jaunty and vocal heavy for my liking, but no hating here.
#5 Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) vs. #12 China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead): 7/6
How silly…I’m sure Cap’n Jack Sparrow would abide. Nice matchup. I’d let them both go forward, if one from the #8/#9 matchup (Morrison/Cohen) didn’t have to move on…
ooh la: 7
when you say nothing: 3
warm love: 6.5
so long: 4
here comes: 6.5 (love the song, not in love with these guys’ version)
fairytale: 5
friggin: 5.5 (love the pistols, but i hate this excerpt from an annoying musical or something)
china cat: 6.5
#1 Ooh La La (Faces, The) – 7 *I really liked Ooh la la… or I just like saying Ooh la la. Hard to tell.
vs. #16 When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) – 5.5
#8 Warm Love (Van Morrison) – 7 *This could be on my Monday morning music list of songs that don’t offend me.
vs. #9 So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) – 5
#4 Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) – 5
vs. #13 Fairytale (Sara Bareilles) – 5.5
#5 Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) – 2.5 *”What the what” -Liz Lemon
vs. #12 China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) – 4.5
Ooh, La, La – 7.25 vs When You Say Nothing – 6.75 – Nothing outstanding her but Ooh La La was more upbeat and hit me right. Allison was a little too draggy for the mood but otherwise a great song.
Warm Love – 8.0 vs So Long Marianne – 7.0 Alas – two really good tracks and Van has the edge though it was not an overly great listen on You Tube. Leonard is one of the very best songwriters going, but like Dylan hasn’t got much of a voice (better than Dylan, though. Leonard always sounds best sung by someone else.
Here Comes My Baby – 10.0 vs Fairytale – 6.0 – Here Comes My Baby is the epitome of a summer music – great tune, great voices, great melody; just want to sing out loud with the track on an endless loop and your toes tapping (but not while you’re driving in traffic). Raul Malo and the Mavericks are a great match for this number. Fairytale was OK but I docked it a point for the video that proved just how glossy this number was.
Friggin in the Riggin – 7.0 vs China Cat – 5.0 – Friggin was pure fun and took advantage of the hour. But be careful, friggin in the riggin can be dangerous, especially with Yankee Doodle around. China Cat was nothing special, and though I’m not very familiar wth the Dead (that’s my nephew’s thing), I gotta believe they have better material than this to attract a throng of DeadHeads, or is it a gaggle?
Good group tonight. Lots of things to listen to. This will be tough going forward.
Ooh, La La – 7.0 vs When You Say Nothing – 6.0
Warm Love – 9.0 vs So Long, Marianne – 7.0
Here Comes My Baby – 9.5 vs Fairytale – 7.0
Friggin in the Riggin – 6.0 vs China Cat – 4.5 – I am speechless over Friggin, but laughing heartily.
Ooh La La (Faces, The) = 6
vs.When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) = 9
Warm Love (Van Morrison) = 9
vs. So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) = 8.5
Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) = 8
vs. Fairytale (Sara Bareilles) = 8.7
Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) = 6
vs. China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) = 6.5
Voting with Sarah today, votes appear as Adam/Sarah
Ooh La la – 7/8
When you say nothing – 5/7
Warm Love – 6.5/7.1
So Long Marianne – 9/6.9
Adam — The drums were way high in the mix on this version. Still, I love Leonard Cohen and especially this song – glad to see him represented in the tournament.
Here Comes My Baby – 6/7
Adam — +.5 for punchy horns
Fairy Tale – 6.3/8
Friggin the Riggin – 5/4.5
Adam — +.5 for a string section in a Sex Pistols song
Sarah — This reminded me of Yankee Doodle Dandy
China Cat – 9.5/7.5
Adam — good pull for the Dead going against Friggin the Riggin
Sarah — 10, just kidding 7.5.
Ooh La La (Faces, The) = 7.5
vs.When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) = 7
Oh La La is all warm and fuzzy isn’t it? Nice. Ronan Keating’s version of When You Say… is the reason I know this song. The UK has much to answer for for keeping that at the top of the charts forever ago. Great song but I don’t like her voice on it – I think it somehow lends itself better to a male vocal. The song is an 8 or 9 but this version isn’t for me.
Warm Love (Van Morrison) = 8
vs. So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) = 5.5
Have to be in the mood for Leonard. I’m apparently not in the mood today. Warm Love gets better and better throughout.
Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) = 4
vs. Fairytale (Sara Bareilles) = 1
Can’t understand the high scores for Fairytale. I think it’s a terrible song. Mavericks also make me cringe but it’s a better song.
Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) = 1
vs. China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) = 4
What is going on today? Friggin is not a good song. It sounds like it should be on the R-rated version of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride and not in a music tournament. Fun – yes; Music tournament – no. People really think this is a 7 or an 8? Seriously? Please dear God let Grateful Dead win this, although it’s another strange song choice for me.
#1 Ooh La La (Faces, The) – 8 – A fantastic song that I somehow did not know was called this.
vs. #16 When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) – 9.2 – One of my favorites, though I’m partial to the Ronan Keating version (which I admit I know from the Notting Hill soundtrack). Maybe because it’s a dude or maybe because it takes me back to when I saw that movie (6 times in theater) — an age when the worst thing in the world was an A- in geometry. The movie hasn’t exactly held up, but the song is even better now.

She – Elvis Costello
Ain’t No Sunshine – Bill Withers
How Can You Mend A Broken Heart? – Al Green
Gimme Some Lovin’ – Spencer Davis Group
#8 Warm Love (Van Morrison) – 5 –
vs. #9 So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) – 4 –
#4 Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) – 5 –
vs. #13 Fairytale (Sara Bareilles) – 3.5 –
#5 Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) – 2 –
vs. #12 China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) – 3 –
#1 Ooh La La (Faces, The) 7
#16 When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) 3.5
I like reading the comments and then researching the claims. E.g., I had no idea that Rod Stewart wasn’t on lead vocals for Ooh La La. No idea. I wish Alison Krauss was singing ‘Baby, now that I’ve found you.” Wrong mood today. Do all of her songs have six words in the title?
#8 Warm Love (Van Morrison) 9.8
#9 So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) 8
I dig it when you’re fancy, dressed up in lace
I dig it when you have a smile on your face
[GREAT NOMINATION. I struggled over which VM song to put in, and in the end chose poorly- no more AW songs, those will have to live in vinyl. But even if I’d gone with a back-up, “Moondance,” “And It Stoned Me,” “Wonderful Remark,” I don’t think any would be a Van 10. This is close though, and I really liked the Leonard Cohen song too.]
#4 Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) 2.5
#13 Fairytale (Sara Bareilles) 2.5
Paging Cat Stevens. I like your version a LOT better, it sounds less like I’m at a free Sunday afternoon concert in the suburbs. Seriously, what is happening in this song. And then it’s almost like The Mavericks fouled Sara Bareilles with 0.2 seconds left while the game was tied. And she was behind the arc. And still couldn’t pull it off. This is the 2011 NCAA championship of the tourney to date.
#5 Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) 5
#12 China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) 6.5
FITR might get more points if they replaced that cursed Spider-Man musical with something like this:
Ooh La La (Faces, The) = 6.3
vs.When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) = 8.9 (this song always makes me think of that scene from Notting Hill)
Warm Love (Van Morrison) = 5.6
vs. So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) = 5
Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) = 8.6 (thank you for bringing this song back into my life – had completely forgotten about it!)
vs. Fairytale (Sara Bareilles) = 8.5 (this matchup just isn’t fair!)
Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) = 1.8 (i thought this song would never ever ever end)
vs. China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) = 4
Ooh La La (Faces, The): 8
When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss): 8
Warm Love (Van Morrison): 7
So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen): 7.5
Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The): 5

#1 Ooh La La (Faces, The) vs. #16 When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) 8:5.5

#5 Friggin’ In The Riggin’ (Sex Pistols, The) vs. #12 China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) 5.5:5

China Cat Sunflower (Grateful Dead) 1
#1 Ooh La La (Faces, The) – 6
#16 When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss) – 2.5 (whenever i tell people i’m into bluegrass, i get “omg, like alison krauss??”. yeah, i know her voice is supposedly like an angel or something, but i’m SO not into it. when i saw she had a song in the running, i was at least looking forward to some awesome bluegrass instrumentals, but this soft rock crap is horrendous. +.5 for the mandolin.)
#8 Warm Love (Van Morrison) – 5
#9 So Long, Marianne (Leonard Cohen) – 7.5
#4 Here Comes My Baby (Mavericks, The) – 5
