Welcome to the Division Championships, also known as the Round of 32. For this round we’ll be doing our usual four match-ups a day, which means the whole round will be over in a matter of days.
Today we’ve got the A, B, C and D Division Championships, a corner of the bracket that is dominated by boomer generation dudes and awesome tunes that have now endured four rounds of intense competition. Listen to them here (except Hey Jude), and learn more about the matchups below. Vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com by Thursday at 8pm. Scroll to the bottom of this page for an easy scoring sheet to copy and paste.
Each song features a “You may ask yourself…well…how did I get here?” road to the Round of 32. Also, remember that this is the last round before we re-calibrate seedings based on each song’s average since the Round of 512. Think of it as a re-rack in beer pong terms, if that helps.

“No, turn it up. Some songs have to be loud. Anthems.”
“Oh. Is this an anthem?”
“Is Hey Jude an anthem??”
And then he just laughed at me for like five minutes.
Anyway, I’ve realized that Creep perfectly captures the teenage angst that sticks with you well into adulthood (forever?), and Hey Jude is not epic enough to register as an anthem to me.
Division C #4 Lookin’ Out My Back Door (Creedence Clearwater Revival) 4
#11 Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley) 8.5
It’s probably sacrilege to say I like the Rufus Wainwright version better, isn’t it? You know… the one he recorded for the Shrek soundtrack? Yeah. Sorry. I dunno, I feel like Hallelujah should make me want to weep and Buckley doesn’t. Still, a lovely and profound song that trounces CCR’s upbeat ditty.
Division D
#5 Mrs. Robinson (Simon and Garfunkel) 6.5 #6 What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield) 9

I’m with Aiko- I prefer the simplicity of the Wainwright, I don’t care if it’s from the Shrek soundtrack. It tells the sad story but doesn’t wrench it out of you. I remember sitting in Janos’s room in the spring of 06 with him and Grant and listening to the Buckley in a tournament we were running, and thinking “So, I feel like crying every time I hear this. Is this a song I want to win?” I think it fell in the quarter-finals that time. Anyway, Wainwright-Buckley aside (and I guess thank you Leonard for the lyrics,) it’s still better than the CCR song- this thing is just silly.
#5 Mrs. Robinson (Simon and Garfunkel) 6.0
#6 What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield) 7.5
I don’t know why we haven’t mentioned that Neil Young is still alive via Buffalo Springfield, but he is. This song doesn’t try to be more than it is, which is solid, and I like that. Still not feeling the Robinson.

I just re-listened to the Rufus Wainwright version of Hallelujah since everyone else seems to love it so. I’m still glad the Buckley version in the tournament. Wainwright has a great voice but his version seems so rushed and unnaturally chipper.
How do you guys feel about the Justin Timberlake version? I think I prefer it to Wainwright but like it less than Buckley. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guL4KgkheoM)

hey jude – 5
lookin’ out my back door – 4
hallelujah – 9
my ratings of hallelujah are so volatile, both within listens & between listens. very mood dependent. today it blows ccr out of the water. might have something to do with the fact that i’m listening at a coffee shop & staring out on a city street on a dreary vancouver day.
mrs robinson – 6 (coffee shop decided to blast “take my breath away” during this song… there was a serious battle between headphones & shop speakers)
for what it’s worth – 7.3
