It’s weird how all of our 90s and 00’s survivors ended up in the last 3 divisions, I’m pretty sure they were more spread out as an aggregate group in the 512…well, it is what it is. If you include the Division N match-ups, the last 6 of the 32 match-ups are straight-up “music produced after 1990” versus “music produced before 1980.” In a way, it’s a big moment for the music that we late twentysomethings and early thirtysomethings grew up with.
In Division O, Cash’s horn-driven “Ring of Fire” goes toe to toe with the seminal song from The Blue Album, while Mike D, MCA, and the other Adrock will do their best to Sabotage CCR’s second Fortunate representative. Division P puts a lot of pressure on our fan favorite Somalian-Canadian to keep it up against the last Survivor from the days of disco, while Billy Joel tries to cruise into the 32 past the last Green Day song which, strangely enough, isn’t from Dookie.

I Will Survive has been my anthem through every breakup and horrific boss. Don’t think I can exist without this song weaving in and out of my life’s soundtrack…
Then there is Wavin Flag: I want to crush this song, just because it is so popular right now. Based on how many times they are playing it here, I can’t imagine how much radio play it is getting in the States. And it is a ringtone, and a Coke commercial. Ugh! I want to give this song a negative score I am so tired of it. But then I try to be objective, if Coke wanted me to write a peppier version of my life and pay more money than I can imagine, would I do it? Uh, yes! And this song was the real version so I gave it a listen. Ah Somalia! And Africa! For so many reasons many are helping, but all with their own motives ( I could talk about African politics for a l o n g time so I will stop here) It is this lyric that leads to give me K’naan a 10 despite my original intentions-

Fortunate Son is one of my favorite songs and is better on all levels than Sabotage. Wish this was a different Beastie song (Body Movin’, High Plains Drifter, Time to get Ill), but wattayagonnado?

Can’t call it. Both songs make me really happy, and have very strong points. Hip Hop and Soul both deserve to live on in this tournament. K’naan is just a bit fresher, so upon further review I’ll give him the nod.
