Round of 64: Divisions C and D Semi-Finals

Moving forward in the Round of 64, our semi-finalists from Division C feature a battle of songs released when our parents were kids (for the most part. I’m turning 28 this month, so at least for me.) and a clash of dance your ass off versus stop and think about things. Division D’s semi-finals only include one surviving top 4 seed and a few upstarts with solid backing from a small contingent of voters. Which will save the day less and less as we continue in the tournament, so we’ll see if more listeners get on board.

Grooveshark link is here, votes are due by 8 pm EST on Tuesday April 5th. Vote by commenting on this post or by e-mailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com. Best of luck to all songs

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

    Okay, new scoring method for this round… things just get more brutal from here on out. I feel like there should be a 4-5 point spread between the song I think should advance and the one I don’t. So really for this round a 2 would be an average song… because there shouldn’t be just average songs left at this point.

  5. Mark B's avatar Mark B says:

    Like A Rolling Stone (Dylan) 9
    Lookin’ Out My Backdoor (CCR) 2

    CCR is definitely not for me. Horrid. Love Rolling Stone so much, always.

    Hey Ya (OutKast) 5
    Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley) 10

    JB’s Hallelujah gives me chills every single time I hear it. It is haunting, beautiful and completely beautiful. I like Hey Ya a lot but it really does pale into near-insignificance in comparison.

    Mrs.Robinson (S&G) 6
    Born To Run (Springsteen) 9

    I like MrsR but the first 30 seconds really irritate me. All power to The Bruce on this one: sometimes this song hits the spot dead on.

    Respect (Aretha Franklin) 7
    For What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield) 2

    Buffalo had little to no effect on me at all. I think it’d be a crime if Aretha didn’t scoop this one with ease.

  6. The Catholic's avatar The Catholic says:

    Like A Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan) 1.5
    Lookin’ Out My Back Door (Creedence Clearwater Revival) 10
    Couldn’t even make it all the way through LARS. Its just kinda cacophanous and rambling. Lookin’ Out My Back Door, on the other hand, made me so happy I had a stupid grin on my face for hours…

    Hey Ya (OutKast) 6.2
    Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley) 8.5

    Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel) 5.9
    Born to Run 1

    Respect (Aretha Franklin) 6.4
    For What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield) 9.4

  7. g-mo's avatar guillermo olivos says:

    Still using the Grant metrics. This is actually really, really helpful.

    2= Average
    3= Yeah
    4= Good
    5= Really Good
    6= Great
    7= Simply Fantastic
    8= Exceptional
    9= Epic
    10= Perfect

    Division C Semi-Finals

    #1 Like A Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan) 4
    #4 Lookin’ Out My Back Door (Creedence Clearwater Revival) 6

    #2 Hey Ya (OutKast) 6.8
    #11 Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley) 8.7

    Division D Semi-Finals

    #5 Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel) 3
    #8 Born To Run (Bruce Springsteen) 10

    Chills in a good way. It’s like “Born To Run” is Keira Knightley in Love Actually; I would have no problem at all knocking on this song’s front door and holding up a sign that said: “To me, you are perfect.”

    #2 Respect (Aretha Franklin) 7
    #6 For What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield) 4.9

  8. Carrie's avatar Carrie says:

    Buying into Grant’s scoring. Thanks man.

    Here we go:

    2= Average
    3= Yeah
    4= Good
    5= Really Good
    6= Great
    7= Simply Fantastic
    8= Exceptional
    9= Epic
    10= Perfect

    Division C Semi-Finals

    #1 Like A Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan) 4.5
    #4 Lookin’ Out My Back Door (Creedence Clearwater Revival) 5.8

    Like both of these songs, just have such a hard time with either of them scoring above great. Never bad, but never amazing.

    #2 Hey Ya (OutKast) 3.5
    #11 Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley) 6.5

    I still don’t know what to do with Hallelujah. THe opening is at least a steady 8 on this scale.. and the ending is in the 9-10 category, just amazing… but I can’t shake a relatively blah 3ish feeling in the middle… and for a fairly long song, that really puts a damper on my scoring. A 6.5 doesn’t in any way do justice to its high points or its low points. I just don’t know what else to do…

    Division D Semi-Finals

    #5 Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel) 5.1
    #8 Born To Run (Bruce Springsteen) 4

    Springsteen was gaining lots of momentum for me. Then for some reason the final 90 seconds of the song completely pissed me off. I have no earthly explanation for it.

    #2 Respect (Aretha Franklin) 4.7
    #6 For What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield) 7

  11. Ogden's avatar Ogden says:

    Division D Semi-Finals

    #5 Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel) 9
    #11 Born to run (Bruce) 8

    #2 Respect (Aretha Franklin) 8.5
    #6 For What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield) 9

  12. Meghan's avatar Meghan says:

    Count me in as another person jumping on the suggested scoring metric for this round, especially since The Catholic’s characterization of the scores was eerily close to how I scored A&B (there was a lot of toe tapping when I listened and I gave a lot of 7s….)

    Like A Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan) 4
    Lookin’ Out My Back Door (Creedence Clearwater Revival) 3

    I usually like CCR more but I just wasn’t feeling them this evening.

    Hey Ya (OutKast) 4
    Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley) 6

    Division D Semi-Finals

    Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel) 6
    Born to run (Bruce) 6.5

    Respect (Aretha Franklin) 8
    For What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield) 7.5

  13. lindsay's avatar lindsay says:

    And I’m jumping on the new scoring rubric bandwagon too. I’m tired of giving everything a 6.5.

    Like A Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan) 2
    Lookin’ Out My Back Door (Creedence Clearwater Revival) 4.5
    I started with a 4.5 on LARS but good gravy is it long. And repetitive. And too much harmonica. And I could have stood at least another minute of CCR. I thoroughly enjoyed that song this evening.

    Hey Ya (OutKast) 6.5 (this equals “ice cold” on my scoring rubric)
    Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley) 9.75
    OutKast, I’m sorry. Hey Ya is a really fun song that reminds me of some really happy times, especially one particularly peppy impromptu pre-bonfire homecoming dance party in Streeter. But dancing my ass off < the Buckley induced chills. I'm just bein' honest.

    Division D Semi-Finals

    Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel) 5

    10= Perfect

    Division C Semi-Finals

    #1 Like A Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan) 4
    #4 Lookin’ Out My Back Door (Creedence Clearwater Revival) 4.5

    #2 Hey Ya (OutKast) 8.2
    #11 Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley) 9.6

    Division D Semi-Finals

    #5 Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel) 5.2
    #8 Born To Run (Bruce Springsteen) 5.0 [The Boss doesn’t move me the way it did a few years back. I think his sound has been harvested by so many bar bands that its become a bit trite; a victim of his own success].

    #2 Respect (Aretha Franklin) 3.5
    #6 For What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield) 6 [I wouldn’t call this great, but halfway btw. good and exceptional. (obviously, the scale is just evidence to help, not a solid metric). But there’s a lot of merit in an absolute bare bones song that holds up for 40 years.]
