Music Tournament Round of 128: Division O

(This post is going up a little early, as I’ll be offline much of the evening)

I love Division O as well. It’s hard to get more eclectic than the battlers we have below in the penultimate division.  Listen at Grooveshark and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com before Thursday at 8pm.

#1 Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medicine Show) vs. #8 Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash).  Despite the seedings, I wouldn’t count Cash out yet.  As Guillermo pointed out yesterday, he is still undefeated to this point (a dazzling 11-0 record).

#4 Piece of My Heart (Janis Joplin) vs. #5 Say It Ain’t So (Weezer).  It’s the end of the line for one of these artists, who have both had solid tournaments.

#7 Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf) vs. #15 Sabotage (Beastie Boys).  After their performance in the Round of 256, I’d actually consider the Beastie Boys favorites here. Again, one of these artists will be eliminated.  Have you ever actually seen a picture of Steppenwolf before?

#3 Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong) vs. #6 Fortunate Son (CCR).  This could be a doozy.

    Wagon Wheel – 5
    Ring Of Fire – 7

I am clearly not born to love country. Sorry Wagon Wheel.

Piece of My Heart – 10
    Say It Ain’t So – 9

Wow. This is so hard for me. I love Weezer like no other man does (I even LOVE ‘Make Believe’ for real) but the Janis rasp has never been better than on this track. Gah. Weezer would have demolished anything else in this Division 😦

    Sabotage – 7
    Magic Carpet Ride – 3

I think Magic Carpet Ride is horrible.

    Wonderful World – 6.5
    Fortunate Son – 6.5

    Stalemate.

Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medicine Show) 10
    Ring of Fire 10

Piece of My Heart (Joplin) 8.4
    Say it ain’t so 8.1

    Fortunate Son (CCR) 8.1

  6. The Catholic says:

Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medicine Show) ~ 7.7
Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash) ~ 6.4
Great matchup. Wagon Wheel is a better song.

Piece of My Heart (Janis Joplin) ~ 8.5
    Say It Ain’t So (Weezer) ~ 6.9
I love Weezer, but when I put this song on the ladies in the room hated it and made me skip. That doesn’t change my love for it, but it definitely hurts its score that some people find it unlistenable…

Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf) ~ 7.2
    Sabotage (Beastie Boys) ~ 6.2
Same situation with Sabotage. I like the song alot, but a bit too cacophanous to let it move on…

Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong) ~ 8.9
    Fortunate Son (CCR) ~ 10
Tough call, really appreciate both these songs but Fortunate Son is just too rockin to go down in this round…

  7. Guillermo says:

    Wagon Wheel 8
    Ring of Fire 8.2

I mean, I’m not voting this way to stir the pot. This afternoon, it just feels like Wagon Wheel is the best High School basketball team in the country, and Ring of Fire is the Harlem Globetrotters. That’s my best analogy for this.

    Piece Of My Heart 8.5
    Say It Ain’t So 9.2

I have exactly one decent friend that I hang out with that went to Julliard, he’s in New Haven now doing more viola school. Last December, we were at Depot shopping for a pong table for my Done With New England party and I started telling him about the tournament.

Me: You should vote. We have over 500 songs.
Lacrosse: You don’t need 500 songs. I’ll tell you what the best song is right now. You want to know?
Me: I mean, I guess, but we’re going to give every song a chance.
Lacrosse: That’s fine, but the best song in history is Say It Ain’t So by Weezer.
    Me: Well, we’ll see.
    Lacrosse: No. You’ll see.

I tell that story because Say It Ain’t So placed 1st out of 256 songs last round in average score. When I saw that, I thought “Huh. How. About. That.”

    Magic Carpet Ride 5
    Sabotage 8.5

I was visiting my parents last week and went through the Box Set list with my mother. She got really excited when she saw Steppenwolf because she was there when they played the Bangor Auditorium in the 70s (Grant is likely the only person who has any clue where that is. Paul Bunyan, what.) Anyways, then she goes, “oh that’s so exciting, so when I was your age I saw a band that plays one of the best songs ever, according to you and your friends in your contest!” And I felt pretty weird having to say, “well…sort of.”

    What A Wonderful World 5
    Fortunate Son 7.8

    Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf) 5
    Sabotage (Beastie Boys) 3

    Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong) 7.5
    Fortunate Son (CCR) 9

  10. G says:

Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medicine Show) 5.5 [just not feeling the twang. Really do like the against me! version better] which you’all can check out here:

Ring of Fire (Cash) 5.6 [god. what’s wrong with me today? neither of these are getting any traction. .1 for Cash for the back story. Although they’re both covers (wagon wheel less so since only the chorus was taken from Dylan).]

Piece of My Heart (Joplin) 6.0
Say it ain’t so (Weezer) 9.1 [and I found my mood.]

    Sabotage (Beastie Boys) 7
    Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf) 6

    Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong) 8
    Fortunate Son (CCR) 6.5

  11. aiko says:

    Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf) 7
    Sabotage (Beastie Boys) 5

    Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong) 7.8
    Fortunate Son (CCR) 8

  14. janos marton says:

Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medicine Show) 7.4
Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash) 7.6
Wagon Wheel was alright, but it’s time for it to exit.

Piece of My Heart (Janis Joplin) 8.3
Say It Ain’t So (Weezer) 8.5
    Another close one…

    Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf) 7.7
    Sabotage (Beastie Boys) 7.6
    Man, it took two listens.

    Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong) 7.9
    Fortunate Son (CCR) 7.7
Maybe I’m just drained and shouldn’t make decisions for a while. I do feel confident about this one though.

  15. natalie says:

wagon wheel – 10 (this brought back so many wonderful memories today, mostly involving seattle summers, ahhh, and those harmonies felt oh so good)
    ring of fire – 9

piece of my heart – 6
    say it ain’t so – 9

    magic carpet ride – 7.5
    sabotage – 9

    wonderful world – 4
    fortunate son – 8.5

  16. Adrock says:

Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medicine Show) 4.5
Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash) 7.3

God, this is gotta be as low as I’ve scored the man in black all tournament, but he wasn’t quite as awesome as usual.

Piece of My Heart (Joplin) 8.8
Say it ain’t so (Weezer) 6.1

Something about Joplin was just so raw today that it matched my mood perfectly. Definitely the best score I’ve given her so far.

    Sabotage 8.1
    Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf) 6.8

    Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong) 7.8
    Fortunate Son (CCR) 3.5

Shocked with myself over CCR. I love this song but something about it rubbed me the wrong way today. No good explanation.
