Music Tournament Round of 128: Division N

If you remember, Division N is the Division that Rocks!  These guys will get you amped up, which is important on a Tuesday/Wednesday.  Listen here (except Golden Slumbers) and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com by 8pm on Wednesday.

#1 Under the Bridge (Red Hot Chili Peppers) vs. #9 Paint It Black (Rolling Stones).  The Stones got clobbered in their last two matchups, so hopefully they can turn it around here. The Chili Peppers have casually averaged an 8 in their first two rounds, and have yet to be challenged.   That’s Stones’ guitarist Brian Jones in the photo. He rocked the sitar for Paint It Black, and died drowning in a swimming pool three years later. Keith Richards stole his girlfriend and really, really hated him.

#4 You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) vs. #12 Zombie (Cranberries).  Countdown till Adrock makes a comment about how there should be more AC/DC songs in the tournament in three…two…one…

#2 Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) vs. #10 Laid (James).  Obviously Nirvana is the favorite, but Laid is a plucky tune that could catch people in the right mood.

#3 Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane) vs. #6 Golden Slumbers Medley (Beatles).  The 60s were pretty cool, yeah?

  1. Adrock says:

Well, there should be more AC/DC songs in here. For those of you with a bit of a bluesy vein, I heartily recommend the Jack and Sin City from the Bon Scott days. I’m tempted to don a schoolboy uniform and cap for this song set in tribute.

  2. treat me like a guest says:

#1 Under the Bridge (Red Hot Chili Peppers) 8 vs Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 6

#4 You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) 5 vs. #12 Zombie (Cranberries) 6

#2 Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) 10 vs. #10 Laid (James) 5 I just heard the Patti Smith version of Smells Like Teen Spirit and while it’s good, it kind of feels wrong to understand the lyrics to this song.

#3 Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane) 8 vs. #6 Golden Slumbers Medley (Beatles) 6

    paint it black – 7.6
oh, golly, geez, i don’t know, i’ve listened 3 times, i can’t make up my mind, aahhh! i was rooting for the rhcp the whole time, but those stones, they’re doing something right.

you shook me all night long – 8
    zombie – 7
wow, i’m having a really hard time with these today. maybe i’m too focused on work?

smells like teen spirit – 7.7
    laid – 9.9
you know, as i was walking to work this morning, “laid” came on the radio & i thought to myself “what a great song, i hope it’s still in the tournament.” sometimes wishes come true.

    somebody to love – 8
    golden slumbers medley – 5

  8. virgil102 says:

    Under the Bridge 8
    Paint it Black 10

You Shook Me All Night Long 10
    Zombie 6.2

    Smells Like Teen Spirit 7.2

    GSM 6.2

  9. G says:

#1 Under the Bridge (Red Hot Chili Peppers) 6.5
#9 Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 8
was routing for the chili peppers but it just didn’t move me like it used to. There’s something amazing about the sloppy, haunting arrangement of Paint it Black. The weird fretless bass slides, and an almost intricate guitar…

#4 You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) 5.5
#12 Zombie (Cranberries) 6 [close call. Just find this song a bit more interesting.]

#2 Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) 8.5
    #10 Laid (James) 6

#3 Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane) 5.5
#6 Golden Slumbers Medley (Beatles) 9.5 [not quite a 10 today, but pretty much amazing]

  10. aiko says:

Under the Bridge (Chili Peppers) 7
Paint it Black (Rolling Stones) 8
Excellent songs from bands I am otherwise usually fairly indifferent about… But, however Keith Richards may have felt about it, the sitar (which I usually actively dislike) on Paint it Black takes it to the next level.

You Shook Me All night long (AC/DC) 6
    Zombie (Cranberries) 7.5
I think I’ve said this before, but it needs to be at least 80 degrees and I need to be moving at least 60mph with the windows down to properly feel You Shook Me All Night Long.

Smells like teen spirit (Nirvana) 8
    Laid (James) 9
Oooh, this is tough…. Laid is one of the very few songs in this tournament that I think suffers for not being longer. I just feel like voting for it. So there.

Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane) 6
    Golden Slumbers Medley (Beatles) 8
If it weren’t a medley I think I’d like it more.

  11. Mark B says:

    Under the Bridge – 8
    Paint it Black – 5.5

You Shook Me All Night Long – 6
    Zombie – 9.5

ACDC are so brilliantly ridiculous…I wonder what the kids today would think of them? Fun but not enduring I don’t think. Zombie is so awesome…one of the first three albums I bought on CD. LOVE.

Smells like Teen Spirit – 7.5
    Laid – 2

Teen Spirit is a classic of my school days (aaaah, angsty days at the Youth Club) but I really struggle with whether it’s actually a ‘good’ song. It’s obviously better than James though. Slightly horrified to see James still in the competition at this stage.

    Somebody to Love – 3
    Golden Slumbers Medley – 7

    Not feeling Jefferson at all.

  12. Janos says:

#1 Under the Bridge (Red Hot Chili Peppers) 8
#9 Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 8.3
Close win for Paint It Black. Both great songs.

#4 You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) 7
    #12 Zombie (Cranberries) 5
I may be drinking Red Bull at 12:30am on a Tuesday, but AC/DC was still a bit much. (Citing Reverse Aiko Factor- turning volume down repeatedly does not bode well)

#2 Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) 7.6
    #10 Laid (James) 7.5
A narrow win for Teen Spirit after two listens.

#3 Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane) 7.3
#6 Golden Slumbers Medley (Beatles) 7.9
Wasn’t feeling Slumbers today, but enough for the win.

  13. Meghan says:

Under the Bridge (Red Hot Chili Peppers) 6.5
Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 6.3

You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) 7.6
    Zombie (Cranberries) 7.5

Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) 7
    Laid (James) 7.3

Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane) 8
    Golden Slumbers Medley (Beatles) 6

  14. Guillermo says:

    Under The Bridge 8.8
    Paint It Black 7.5

This was closer than the scores make it look. If that makes sense, it does in my head. They were both at 8.5’s until the respective last 25% of their songs. What happened next is above.

Shook Me All Night Long 8.5
    Zombie 7.4

I’m with Adrock on the AC/DC thing. This song though makes me think of Southern girls with Southern accents and Southern attitudes, and that’s a good thing.

    Smells Like Teen Spirit 6.8
    Laid 6.5

Par for James, disappointing for Nirvana. Eh.

    Somebody to Love 6.8
    Golden Slumbers Medley 8.0

Did you know if you want to buy GSM on iTunes you have to purchase all three parts separately for $1.29 each? It’s totally f’d.

    • G says:

this was my point originally that it’s not really a song or even a melody really–but the back half of Abby Road that Spector made flow together. But I think we let this slide earlier because there’s no better way to break these songs up for the tournment, and many do think of them all as one piece. [although, I’d say the whole side B of the record is one piece.]

      • janos marton says:

I’m curious, what did Phil Spector have to do with Abbey Road? He worked on Let It Be, but I was under the impression that Abbey Road was all George Martin (and Paul being very hands on).

  15. GGT says:

Under the Bridge (Red Hot Chili Peppers) 8.1
Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 8.4

You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) 5.8
    Zombie (Cranberries) 9.1

Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) 8.5
    Laid (James) 6.1

Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane) 5.5
    Golden Slumbers Medley (Beatles) 6.5

  16. Adrock says:

#1 Under the Bridge (Red Hot Chili Peppers) 4
#9 Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 7.1

The Chili Peppers just weren’t lighting up my eardrums, what can I say. Stones weren’t on the top of their game, but definitely pumped me up enough to score a win.

#4 You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) 9
    #12 Zombie (Cranberries) 7.3

Ahh, Angus’ rhythms were just what I needed to feel better at work. And yet, I still can’t shake the Zombie love… this nostalgia is crazy strong, and I can’t explain it. I fear that AC/DC may lose, but Zombie is just too solid to score this different.

#2 Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) 9.3
    #10 Laid (James) 5.5

Damn. I’m not the biggest Nirvana fan by a long shot, but this was dead on. Totally legit #2, who was my favorite in this division once the brackets were set. (Over AC/DC btw…I know, I’m a bit of a homer)

#3 Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane) 8.5
#6 Golden Slumbers Medley (Beatles) 6.8

Gracie Slick can sing her ass off, no doubt about it. Sad that it wasn’t White Rabbit, which I actually like better, but this is a nasty song. As for the Beatles… this song is really up and down to me. Golden Slumbers feels like a 5 or so, although the urgent forceful shout early on is something I wish I heard more of in the Beatles, Carry That Weight is in the 9 range, absolutely love it. Then the End sort of appropriately balances in the 6.5ish range. I enjoy the whole group, but it’s hard to shake the uneven feeling I have from it.

  17. Sam says:

#1 Under the Bridge (Red Hot Chili Peppers) 8.8
vs Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) 7

I think growing up I always thought cool kids that had sweet skateboards and played the guitar only listened to the Chili Peppers. I did none of the above things, yet still aspire to be like them. The stone just make me think of my parents. Plus there are better stones songs, although maybe none with a verse this good.

#4 You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) 5.5 vs. #12 Zombie (Cranberries) 8.5

Angus Young will always and forever be etched in my memory for his playing in that Thunderstruck video. In fact when I hear this song I think to myself….why doesn’t he just play thunderstruck. It’s like when I say Tommy Tutone open for Less than Jake…the crowd made him play 867-5309 twice. Not to say that AC/DC is a one hit wonder, but they should stick to their guns, not a song that is a go-to iMovie slideshow backing track for party photos. And the cranberries kill this song…as evidenced by the bands that still cover it today on tour.

#2 Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) 9.3 vs. #10 Laid (James) 5

Don’t think I understood Nirvana until I read a bio by the drummer of Semisonic who referred to Dave Grohl as the drummer that everyone in rock wanted to be. He talked abut him like he was a demigod. Add in Kurt Cobain and that explains my score. As for James…..sounds like the soundtrack to a John Hughes film. That or the credits for a grainy Chevy Chase movie.

#3 Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane) 7.8 vs. #6 Golden Slumbers Medley (Beatles) 6

Good female rock vocalists don’t exist these days….besides from Grace Potter who apparently sucked all the talent up. I think my score is inflated for JA because I like hearing girls rock out. I don’t think the Golden Slumbers Medley would make my top 25 beatles songs, which would all rate very high here, but alas this song does not.

  18. Mark O says:

#1 Under the Bridge (Red Hot Chili Peppers) [7.25]
#9 Paint It Black (Rolling Stones) [8]

#4 You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC) [7]
    #12 Zombie (Cranberries) [7.75]

#2 Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) [6.5]
    #10 Laid (James) [7.5]

#3 Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane) [6.5]
#6 Golden Slumbers Medley (Beatles) [9]
