Living The Dream Music Tournament: Round of 128, Division B

Stories of Division B: This is the first serious, serious test for a 1 seed- after posting a juggernaut 8.75 average in the Round of 512 (bolstered by 9+ scores from Missing In Action voters Jordan and Jim Rock), When The Levee Breaks limped past Wu-Tang in the 256 with a flailing 6.42. Hopefully Robert Plant gave everyone a seriously needed pep talk, as it now faces off against 8 seed Stevie Wonder’s lone survivor and rising star, Supersition (who contrarily gained momentum, from 7.71 to 8.28.)

Other stories…the Bee Gees look to continue their upset streak against the Kinks (my dark horse, and I can almost guarantee disco will get no help from me on this.) Topping it off are a 25 year apart battle of heavy guitars between Jimi and Thom, as well as a softer clash of odes to loved ones, Patti D’Arbanville and Julian Lennon respectively. Grooveshark link is here, except for Hey Jude, votes can be posted as comments below or by e-mailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com, and are due by Friday night at 8 pm.

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

Tough round. Wasn’t feeling well tonight. Hey Jude was very helpful. Everything else… not so much.

I also had a long, rough day and I was looking for songs to make it better… they weren’t really to be found in this bracket for me.

When the Levee Breaks (Led Zepplin) 4
    Superstition (Stevie Wonder) 7.5
Pep talk fail. Funky bass wins.

    Wild World (Cat Stevens) 4
Hey Jude (The Beatles ) 6

All Day and All of the Night (The Kinks) 6
    Stayin’ Alive (Bee Gees) 2

    Creep (Radiohead) 7
    Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) 2
Purple Haze seems eternal and it’s not even 3 minutes long. Booooo.

  5. Danno says:

When the Levee Breaks (Led Zepplin) 5
    Superstition (Stevie Wonder) 9

    Wild World (Cat Stevens) 7

All Day and All of the Night (The Kinks) 6
    Stayin’ Alive (Bee Gees) 7.5

    Creep (Radiohead) 8
    Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) 6

  6. Mark O says:

#1 When The Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) [4.5]
    #8 Superstition (Stevie Wonder) [7.75]

#4 Wild World (Cat Stevens) [7]
#5 Hey Jude (The Beatles) [9]

#7 All Day and All of the Night (The Kinks) [7.25]
#15 Stayin’ Alive (The Bee Gees) [6]

    #3 Creep (Radiohead) [8]
#11 Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) [6.5]

  7. Mark B says:

When the Levee Breaks (Led Zepplin) 4
    Superstition (Stevie Wonder) 6.5

Not feeling this Zepplin at all today.

    Wild World (Cat Stevens) 8.5
Hey Jude (The Beatles ) 9

Ouch. Tough. I love both of these songs. I always thought that Wild World is the perfect soundtrack song. Hey Jude probably needs to win this though.

All Day and All of the Night (The Kinks) 6
    Stayin’ Alive (Bee Gees) 6

Both good but neither should win this thing. Solid 6s.

    Creep (Radiohead) 9
    Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) 4

Creep still makes me feel the same way it did when I first heard it which is a lot. Purple Haze is not for me.

  8. Guillermo says:

#1 When The Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) 8.5
    #8 Superstition (Stevie Wonder) 7.5

A reworking of a song about the 1927 Mississippi Flood that contributed to Huey Long’s rise to the governance of Louisisana? And do you know how much is going on in the background of this song? And that the Beastie Boys DID steal the intro percussion for Track 1 of Licensed To Ill? Count it, baby. Superstition is the funkiest, and lovely, and may overcome, but today I’m giving it to the hair and the hair.

#4 Wild World (Cat Stevens) 8
#5 Hey Jude (The Beatles) 5.6

Wild World is smooth as butter. Hey Jude, hmmmm…ok, basically same comment as Changes from Division A, but this is a little better. I get it, Hey Jude is nice and people love it. But as soon as it starts I check my watch. Then three minutes and thirty seconds later I realize we are all out of lyrics, and I’m like, “Really? We’re still doing this?”

#7 All Day and All of the Night (The Kinks) 8.5
#15 Stayin’ Alive (The Bee Gees) 6.5

Dark Horse defense: I’m not a diehard Kinks fan or anything, I just maintain that short songs that work work for a reason, and this one just works for me everytime. Also, when the Doors rip off your song (ADAAOTN : Hello I Love You :: Express Yourself : Born This Way,) something’s gotta be working.

    #3 Creep (Radiohead) 9.1
#11 Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) 7.2

Purple Haze just keeps going, doesn’t it? If Jimi’s advancing, it’s going to be along a watchtower. Creep feels pretty strong these days.

  9. Nate Heller says:

#1 When The Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) 8 vs. #8 Superstition (Stevie Wonder) 8

#4 Wild World (Cat Stevens) 7 vs. #5 Hey Jude (The Beatles) 6

#7 All Day and All of the Night (The Kinks) 8 vs. #15 Stayin’ Alive (The Bee Gees) 5

#3 Creep (Radiohead) 9 vs. #11 Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) 8

  10. virgil says:

When the Levee Breaks 8.5 Superstition 5
Wild World 7 Hey Jude 10
All Day and All of the Night 7.5 Stayin Alive 6
    Creep 5.5 Purple Haze 10

  11. The Catholic says:

When the Levee Breaks (Led Zepplin) 8.5
    Superstition (Stevie Wonder) 10
Wow, I absolutely love both these songs. On 3 back to back listens though, Superstition’s bassline tops Levee’s nostalgic distortion.

    Wild World (Cat Stevens) 7.5
Hey Jude (The Beatles ) 8
Both these songs did it for me, even though normally softer songs like these don’t. One of my coworkers begged me to give Hey Jude a 10. Its close, but not quite there.

All Day and All of the Night (The Kinks) 7.5
    Stayin’ Alive (Bee Gees) 7
Two more solid entries. Really unfamiliar with the Kinks, even though I feel like I’ve heard this song a million times. If this was a contest of style, the Bee Gees would definitely take it.

    Creep (Radiohead) 4
    Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) 8.5
Creep was really flat for me today, was the only song I was waiting to be over. Purple Haze just plain rocks.

  12. Janos says:

When the Levee Breaks (Led Zepplin) 6
    Superstition (Stevie Wonder) 5.5

All Day and All of the Night (The Kinks) 8.4
    Stayin’ Alive (Bee Gees) 7

    Creep (Radiohead) 6
    Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) 5

damn. that harmonica in levee gets me every time… but superstition… damn.

    wild world – 5
    hey jude – 6
the battle of “la la”s and “na na”s

all day & all of the night – 4
    stayin’ alive – 5
this surprised me. i was ready to see disco out of the tournament, but i guess i was feeling the bee gees groove more than the kinks this morning.

    creep – 8
    purple haze – 5
i feel like i should love jimi, but i just don’t, at least not this song.
