Living The Dream Music Tournament: Round of 128, Division A

Alright voters- it’s starting to get real. Mad real. First, most every match-up is going to rock hard- every song here has beat at least two and in play-in cases, three competitors. So we generally like them.

The second story has to do with endurance- it’s one thing to like a song when you only have to listen and vote on it once every month and a half. That’s not going to be the case, as we’ll be on to the Round of 64 in less than three weeks.

Announcements: 1, for the final Sweet 16, we decided that we will reseed all division winners according to their average score across all rounds of competition. Just makes the most sense. 2, song orders for rounds going forward will always have the high seed going first, a la NBA playoff rules. 3, check out awards and the Round of 128 chronology posts below when you get a chance.

Alright, stories of Division A: David Bowie’s two surviving songs try to push on and overcome against 1 seed “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and 14 seed upset expert Blondie’s “Call Me.” We’ve also got the first hip hop record in history to be added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress trying to show Ben Gibbard who’s the boss. And last but not least, Bob and Paul may be smiling in that picture, but it’s down to business in a clash of two mid-60’s folk songs that set the tone for a generation.

Grooveshark link is here, vote by commenting here or by e-mailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com. Votes are due by Thursday at 8 pm. Swimmers, take your marks…

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

  2. aiko says:

It is indeed starting to get real. Up til now I’ve generally been ranking an adequate song at a 5. I don’t love it, I don’t hate it. But there’s going to be some ch-ch-ch-changes with this round. Adequate songs will hover more around a 3. My spreads should be a little bigger, but feelings should be more forceful at this point, right?

You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) 7.5
    Changes (David Bowie) 5

Such Great Heights (Postal Service) 8
    The Message (Grandmaster Flash) 9.5
Okay, so I have about thismuch patience with Ben Gibbard anymore, but this song still gets me every. damn. time. However, The Message is like a knife to the gut. And I mean that in the best way possible.

Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright (Bob Dylan) 4.5
The Sound Of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel) 8
I’ve been trying to keep this in check, but it’s gotta be known for this round. Bob Dylan:aiko as Billy Corgan:The Catholic. The guitar is pretty, too bad Bob is singing over it. Sounds of Silence, however, is always hauntingly good.

    Modern Love (David Bowie) 6
    Call Me (Blondie) 6.5
I though Bowie would take this, but Debbie edges it out.

  3. sweetems says:

I’ve moved my bar for the 128. Now 3.5 is average, 5 is a good song, 7.5 is great, 9 epic and 10 is perfect.

You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) 8
    Changes (David Bowie) 7.5

Such Great Heights (Postal Service) 5.5
The Message (Grandmaster Flash) 6.5 [these lyrics give a more interesting experience of desperation, you know, actual, as opposed to say, “there’s pulp in my O.J.? booo” mood from mr.mopey of Death Cab, although that’s an amazingly produced song.]

Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright (Bob Dylan) 8
The Sound Of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel) 7
[Two amazing sets of lyrics. I’m giving this to the Minnesota poet, but if S&G win I will have no qualms.]

Modern Love (David Bowie) 4.0 [prefer spiders from mars.]
    Call Me (Blondie) [5.5]

#2 Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright (Bob Dylan) 6 vs. #7 The Sound Of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel) 8

#6 Modern Love (David Bowie) 9 vs. #14 Call Me (Blondie) 6

#6 Modern Love (David Bowie) [6.25]
    #14 Call Me (Blondie) [7.5]

  8. The Catholic says:

You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) ~ 8
    Changes (David Bowie) ~ 6.5

Such Great Heights (Postal Service) ~ 5.5
The Message (Grandmaster Flash) ~ 6

    Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright (Bob Dylan) ~ 6.5
The Sound Of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel) ~8

    Modern Love (David Bowie) 4.5
    Call Me (Blondie) 8

  9. natalie says:

    back at it!

you can’t always get what you want – 8.5
    changes – 4 (ch-ch-ch-annoying)

such great heights – 8.5 (this made me quite happy on this dreary morning)
    the message – 4 (it’s a good concept/performance, not such a good “song”)

    don’t think twice it’s alright – 7
the sound of silence – 9
quick story about s.o.s.: growing up, my parents had a “paul simon complete” piano book, and this was the 1st or 2nd song in the book. i had never even heard a recording, but i would always play it on the piano and sing along. it is one of a handful of songs to which i know every single word and it will probably be ingrained in my head forever (and those songs are key if you ever spend extended amounts of time alone in the woods.)

    modern love – 7
    call me – 6
i feel pretty neutral about these 2, both fun, nothing spectacular, wasn’t feeling blondie so much today.

  10. Guillermo says:

#1 You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) 7.5
    #8 Changes (David Bowie) 3.5

I’m with Natalie. This song has never been anything but annoying to me.

#4 Such Great Heights (Postal Service) 6.5
#5 The Message (Grandmaster Flash) 7.25

    Message just flows so nice.

    #2 Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright (Bob Dylan) 8
#7 The Sound Of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel) 9.5

The haunting awesomeness of Sounds of Silence matches up better with the news headlines these days. Looking over the now tapered down division, I really think S&G have a shot from 7 seed at taking the first Final Sweet Sixteen spot.

#6 Modern Love (David Bowie) 6.5
    #14 Call Me (Blondie) 6.5

Toss-up…which may not help Bowie, who may be dance magic dancing his way out of this thing pretty soon.

  11. The Catholic says:

Adjusting my scores down too for the new round. I’ll go with 4 average, 6 good, 8 great 10 perfect.

  16. Mark B says:

You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) 7.5
    Changes (David Bowie) 7

This hurts me: I love The Bowie

Such Great Heights (Postal Service) 8
    The Message (Grandmaster Flash) 4

The Message doesn’t even get a look in here for me. I maintain that the Postal Service album is one of those rare albums that is consistently great.

Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright (Bob Dylan) 8
The Sound Of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel) 6

I have more nostalgic links to Bob so maybe that explains this. This is a really great song.

    Modern Love (David Bowie) 9
    Call Me (Blondie) 6

Debbie: you’re hot, blonde and awesome but I’d say that Bowie slays you here (clearly no one else agrees though…). I think Modern Love is catchy, fun, danceable and generally a big bag of awesome. Also, it makes me smile. Just not feeling Call Me at all right now.

  17. Carrie says:

You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones): 7
    Changes (David Bowie): 7.5

Such Great Heights (Postal Service): 8

    Modern Love (David Bowie): 7.5

#4 Such Great Heights (Postal Service) 8 vs. #5 The Message (Grandmaster Flash) 7

#2 Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright (Bob Dylan) 10 vs. #7 The Sound Of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel) 8

#6 Modern Love (David Bowie) 9 vs. #14 Call Me (Blondie) 7

  19. Astrid says:

You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) 8.4
    Changes (David Bowie) 7.3

Such Great Heights (Postal Service) 6.2
    The Message (Grandmaster Flash) 8.0

Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright (Bob Dylan) 6.5
The Sound Of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel) 8.9

    Modern Love (David Bowie) 3.1
    Call Me (Blondie) 9.9

  20. Adrock says:

Agree with the Catholic, and am recentering my scores to reflect the awesomeness of remaining songs – not even really down on the songs with mediocre scores, it just seems like the depth here called for greater spreads.

#1 You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) [5]
    #8 Changes (David Bowie) [6.8]

#4 Such Great Heights (Postal Service) [3.5]
#5 The Message (Grandmaster Flash) [5.5]
