Two upsets this round. And the high score goes to an unexpected contender that, along with Jacob, reminds us that Marconi was a radio dude that has a statue on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. 6 seed Jefferson Starship’s (Starship? Jefferson Starship? They changed their name at some point) “We Built This City” scores a whopping 81.5 points over Stevie Wonder’s “For Once In My Life” ‘s 71.2. Stevie goes to 1-2 in the round.
Upset of the day goes to the Man In Black himself, whose titular 15 seed defeats Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” 75.4-64.75. Some people really, really hated on 90’s MJ- so it goes. Johnny Cash improves to 3-0 in the Round of 256 with “Ring of Fire” still to come. MJ goes to 3-1 and is done competing in this round.
Second upset of the day goes to Manu Chao’s “Me Gustas Tu”, squeaking by George Michael’s “Freedom” 66.85-65.1.
Paul Simon indefatigable? Guess again. Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros continue their “Johnny Appleseed” march, and defeat “Boy In The Bubble”, 68.2-64.4. Paul solo goes 1-2 in the Round of 256; “You Can Call Me Al” is the only song moving on from the Graceland album.
Out of the tournament: George Michael.
