LTDMT Round of 256: Division D, Day 2

Division D has one really disparate match-up, but three that fit nicely for genre/tempo.  Grooveshark link is here (really here now, as of 12:23 pm) or you can e-mail your votes to LTDdotorg@gmail.com. Votes due by Thursday, Feb. 17th at 9 am. Last stands for Buffalo Springfield and Spencer Davis Group (and Steve Winwood by default, who lost a solo play-in months ago.)

#2 Respect (Aretha Franklin) vs. #15 American Music (Violent Femmes)

#7 Sweet Jane (Velvet Underground) vs. #10 Let’s Spend The Night Together (Rolling Stones)  [Note on this: I remember Brian, Janos, Cristina, and myself being really confused about the bridge on Sweet Jane during NYE voting. I looked into it, got this from the Wiks: “When Loaded was originally released in 1970, [Sweet Jane’s] bridge was edited out. The box set Peel Slowly and See and reissue Loaded: Fully Loaded Edition restored the missing section.” Since it was the original recording without the edit that advanced, we’ll keep using that one, but that’s why it might seem a little different.”]

#3 Gimme Some Lovin’ (Spencer Davis Group) vs. Fool In The Rain (Led Zeppelin)

#6 For What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield) vs. The Only Living Boy In New York (Simon & Garfunkel)

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

    Slow Tuesday out there…

    Respect: 7.5
    American Music: 8

    Sweet Jane: 8
Let’s Spend the Night Together: 9.5
When the Rolling Stones played this for the first time on television, they had to change the lyrics to “Let’s spend some time together.” Keith Richards reflected, “Some time together was ok. But a whole night was out of the question.” Cee Lo can relate.

    Gimme Some Lovin’: 8.5
    Fool in the Rain: 9
    Spectacular.

For What It’s Worth: 8 (reunion at Bonnaroo? sweet.)
Only Living Boy in New York: 8.5

Probably my favorite Round of 256 set so far.

    Respect (Aretha Franklin) ~ 8.5
American Music (Violent Femmes) ~ 5
RESPECT is classic, always gets me pumped. American Music rarely does anything for me. Perry Farrell has better.

Sweet Jane (Velvet Underground) ~ 2
Let’s Spend The Night Together (Rolling Stones) ~ 6.5
Sweet Jane is just not a very good song. The vocals are garbled, the instruments are discordant and dated. I’m amazed it made it into this round, must have some sort of nostalgia factor going for it. LSTNT isn’t much better, one of the Stones’ weaker songs.

Gimme Some Lovin’ (Spencer Davis Group) ~ 7.5
Fool In The Rain (Led Zeppelin) ~ 8.5
Really enjoyed both of these. Fool in the Rain has a truly superb riff though, and ties together better as a complete song than Gimme Some Lovin’.

For What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield) ~ 9.5
The Only Living Boy In New York (Simon & Garfunkel) ~ 4
Man I love For What It’s Worth, almost gave it a ten. The Only Living Boy in New York was pretty boring. Maybe this is in the tournament for the same reason Empire State of Mind was…

I continue to think I’m having a musical stroke. Oh well, let’s go with it.

    Sweet Jane: 2.5
Let’s Spend the Night Together: 7.5

    Gimme Some Lovin’: 7
    Fool in the Rain: 8.5

I definitely missed a few of these the first time around I think…or else was hammered when listening… really liking this set.

    For What It’s Worth: 9
Only Living Boy in New York: 5.5

I was feeling better… then I was Garfunkeled. At least I’m blaming it on him, because Paul’s the man.

    Sweet Jane: 8.5
Let’s Spend the Night Together: 5.0

    Gimme Some Lovin’: 6.5
Fool in the Rain: 3.5 This song is annoying but the guitar tone in the breakdown is well ahead of its time.

    For What It’s Worth: 7
Only Living Boy in New York: 8 [surprise for me]

    Respect (Aretha Franklin) 8

If the Violent Femmes, as a band, were revivified into a single person… I would want that person’s life, short and brutal though it might be. I mean, Aretha sounds perfect. But the Violent Femmes sound like the perfect mess. That will always win in my book.

    Sweet Jane (Velvet Underground) 4.5
Let’s Spend The Night Together (Rolling Stones) 3.5
What? This RS song is so boring. I think I’d forgotten that I’ve heard it before.

Gimme Some Lovin’ (Spencer Davis Group) 4
Fool In The Rain (Led Zeppelin) 6
    Zzzzzzz

For What It’s Worth (Buffalo Springfield) 9.5
The Only Living Boy In New York (Simon & Garfunkel) 8
Okay but this match up woke me up? Like the Catholic I’m bordering on a 10 FWIW… But I’ll stick with my score. I always love Simon & Garfunkel, but all they’re winning from me today is my heart.

    Respect 6
    American Music 8.5

We all know Respect is a cover, right? This falls into the same category of me always choosing the Dolly Parton “I Will Always Love You” over the Whitney Houston. And I’ve recently been coming to terms with the fact that there is entirely too little Otis Redding in this tournament. On the other hand, I fucking love American Music- what other song can successfully tie “will you go to the prom with me” with “oh, did you also do too many drugs? Me too, we should hang out” with “we aren’t the same age? we still have american music and each other, fuck it.” Wonderful, even with the extended outro commented on in the last round. This won’t advance, but I stand hard on these scores. Also, I wish Add It Up was in the tournament.

    Sweet Jane 8
Let’s Spend The Night Together 5

Anthem vs. I don’t know how to describe this, but this would not make it onto a full CD of my favorite Stones songs.

    Gimme Some Lovin’ 7
    Fool In The Rain 8.75

After all the hubbub about Spencer Davis Group taking out Johnny B Goode, maybe in the end they are both just two fun little songs. Steve Winwood was 18 though when he helped write it, so up to a 7 for talent points. Fool In The Rain, I loved right now.

    For What It’s Worth 6.5
Only Living Boy In New York 4.5

I can’t take either of these songs seriously, but can get through the Buffalo Springfield easier than the S&G.
