Music Tournament Round of 256: Division B, Day 2

Before tonight’s match-ups, we have an announcement about ties, since one almost happened today.  In the event of a tie (and following a recount), the artist with the fewest songs left in the tournament advances.   If even that is a tie, double-overtime will be based on a standard deviation formula that Guillermo and I will fine-tune tomorrow.

Listen to tonight’s songs on Grooveshark.

Don Henley and the Bee Gees face elimination tonight.  Vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com.   Votes due at 8:30pm Saturday night, EST.

#2 L.A Woman (Doors) vs.  #15 Stayin’ Alive (Bee Gees)

#7 All Day and All of the Night (Kinks) vs. #10 Hotel Yorba (White Stripes).  I’m looking forward to this one. Short and sweet songs.

#3 Creep (Radiohead) vs. #14 Boys of Summer (Don Henley).   Creep pulled off one of the biggest upsets of last round, taking out Time (Pink Floyd).

#6 My Name is Jonas (Weezer) vs. #11 Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix).  This one should be fierce as well.

I don’t think Creep winning its way into this round is an upset. That song has rocked my world for at least the last 15 years.

#6 My Name is Jonas (Weezer) 4.5
#11 Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) 6.5
I start off being pretty stoked on My Name is Jonas, but then it just started grating by the end of the song was super aggro.

    LA Woman- 3.5
    Staying Alive- 5

LA Woman is like salvia- you think it’s a good idea, and then 8 of the longest minutes of your life later you come to, with myriad regret and solid decisions about your future choices. This is in no way a song I would want to listen to straight through for 7 more rounds. And then Staying Alive is more like a whippet that won’t end. Maybe that sounds good to you, but personally I only want to talk to God for 30 seconds at a time. I hate this match-up.

    All Day 9.8
    Yorba 9.25

This, on the other hand, is an awesome, awesome match-up.

    Creep 9
    Boys of Summer 7.5

When Radiohead gets you, they get you.

    Jonas 7.5
    Purple Haze 7

Sorry for my absence the past few nights. Work, etc.
Damn, this tourney just got hard – all the songs are good.
I’m gonna HTML the shit out of this comment

L.A. Woman (Doors) vs. Stayin’ Alive (Bee Gees) = 6 to 8.5
Damn. Stayin’ Alive is an unbelievable song. But L.A. Woman is just tough and cool. But too long. Starts out strong then looses you.
When I was growing up and my dad bought the first CD player in the house, the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack was one of his earliest purchases. This was very, very strange – he’s more of a 70s rock sort of guy – nothing too adventurous, but he never listened to garbage. For some reason he bought this double CD set – and just BLASTED this tune to show off the fidelity of the new stereo system. He really turned it up. Almost everybody now-a-days listens to music on tinny computer speakers or tinny ipod headphones. It’s a shame. I’m guilty of this too – my stereo is in living room, but I hang out in my bedroom. Audio engineers spend their lives mastering the art of sound – and we just take their work and shred it when converting to an MP3, then force it through some 10 cent bullshit speakers. If you have a chance, blast ‘Staying Alive’ on a boss sound system, turn the bass up, and groove. This is a monster. It makes you almost understand the whole disco thing.

All Day and All of the Night (Kinks) vs. Hotel Yorba (White Stripes) = 6 to 8
The Kinks are great, and I am a bigger 6Ts big beat-esque music fan than most, but their genius lies in Preservation Green Society era stuff. Stick with the Small Faces or the Creation for your 6Ts freakbeat fix. Hotel Yorba is a real place.

Creep (Radiohead) vs. Boys of Summer (Don Henley) = 3.5 to 5
I don’t really know what Boys of Summer is about, Don Henley is a cheeseball, but I do like the imagery of ‘you can never go back’…we all gotta face it one day.
“Stop Whispering” is great, a few tunes off of The Bends are good, they have some incredible guitar work (and great distorto-crunching guitars on this single in particular, of course), and I appreciate their effort to experiment, but I just don’t get Radiohead. Get a grip man, it’s gonna be ok. Your job is to play guitar and write songs. IT’S GOING TO BE OK.

My Name is Jonas (Weezer) vs. Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) = 9 to 7.5
Good lord. I feel sacrilege. Jimi is one of my faves; Weezer is now, I hope, some meta performance art piece that we’ll all understand one day. But song to song, My Name is Jonas kills. This is definitely their best song, no question. Any other Jimi song and it would’ve gone the other way. Jimi, please don’t it against me – you’re the man.
Never heard this take of Purple Haze before – really cool. Must’ve been the same sessions…probably like within the same 30 minutes.

#15 Stayin’ Alive (Bee Gees) 8

Gotta agree – if both songs had ended a full minute earlier, this would have been closer to an 8.5-9 matchup… but still so good.

#7 All Day and All of the Night (Kinks) 8
#10 Hotel Yorba (White Stripes) 6

Yorba’s growing on me… but the kinks are a full fledged addiction

    #3 Creep (Radiohead) 5
#14 Boys of Summer (Don Henley) 7

#6 My Name is Jonas (Weezer) 8
#11 Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) 6

Disagree with all of you, but like the Bee Gees enough to be fine with it.

all day & all of the night – 7
hotel yorba – 8.5- still hits the spot

    creep – 5.5
the boys of summer – 9

my name is jonas – 9.5 This is also my favorite Weezer song.
    purple haze – 6.5

  15. The Catholic's avatar The Catholic says:

    #2 L.A Woman (Doors) 7
#15 Stayin’ Alive (Bee Gees) 8
The Doors are cooler, but the Bee Gees really outdid themselves with this song. It almost singlehandedly saves Disco from irrelevance. That bassline just kills.
I’m surprised people like how L.A.Woman starts, I found it obnoxious, started grooving a couple minutes in, but was bored by minute 7.

#7 All Day and All of the Night (Kinks) 7.5
#10 Hotel Yorba (White Stripes) 3
Couldn’t stand Hotel Yorba, too cacophanous. The Kinks, on the other hand, now thats a solid rock song.

    #3 Creep (Radiohead) 7
#14 Boys of Summer (Don Henley) 7.5
Boys of Summer is a great song, not feeling it so much today. Creep is also good, but it kinda bums me out.

#6 My Name is Jonas (Weezer) 9
#11 Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) 9
Love this rockin’ matchup. Not sure how you can hate on Purple Haze, Jimi brings it. My Name is Jonas is just phenomenal as well. Too close to call…
