Music Tournament Round of 256: Division B, Day 1

Division B looks filled with upset potential.  Songs are at Grooveshark, and you can vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com before 8pm on Friday.  This is a somewhat dramatic scenario for our lower seeded songs, as every one of them represents the artist’s last stand in the tournament.  Let’s see if Wu, Pickett, R.E.M or Offspring are still around Friday at 8:01pm.

** Check out Wilson Pickett’s guitar player.

#1 When the Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) v. #16 Gravel Pit (Wutang Clan)

#8 Superstition (Stevie Wonder) v. #9 In the Midnight Hour (Wilson Pickett) – this is a sweet match-up.

#4 Wild World (Cat Stevens) vs. #13 Man on the Moon (R.E.M)

#5 Hey Jude (Beatles) vs. #12 Self Esteem (Offspring)

I admittedly was never hot on the 1 seeds for A or B. Wu-Tang ain’t going down without a fight. A tiger style fight.

    #8 Superstition (Stevie Wonder) 9
#9 In the Midnight Hour (Wilson Pickett) 7

Superstition is pretty consistently awesome. I admittedly have on average 5% of the say, but I think I could go all the way in B (yes, Catholic, I know you are beaming. Stop it and go grow some vegetables or something.)

#4 Wild World (Cat Stevens) 8.5
    #13 Man on the Moon (R.E.M) 6.5

Love the chorus, REM. Hate the verses a lot though. Wild World is wonderful.

    #5 Hey Jude (Beatles) 5
    #12 Self Esteem (Offspring) 7

My “I’m getting sick of the Beatles” comment from Golden Slumbers is still apparently going strong. And I’ve never been so hot on Hey Jude. Self-Esteem isn’t the best in the world, but it’s what I’m feeling right now.

Self Esteem (Offspring) 5.5 [this started off really strong for me and I had it neck in neck with Jude, but that wore off after about a minute. then got meh.]

Just finished listening to that offspring song and I think my two was generous. It doesn’t even have a chorus.. actually, come to think of it, neither does Hey Jude, but nah nah nanananahhh never sounded so catchy.

Surprised how everyone has turned on Zeppelin. Last time I checked, this song still rocks. Gravel Pit has a nice tune for a mainstream rap song, but the lyricism is passable at best. Not a particularly deep or excellent hip hop number.

    Superstition (Stevie Wonder) 10
In the Midnight Hour (Wilson Pickett) 8.5
I concur with everyone else on how good these two songs are.

    Wild World (Cat Stevens) 8
Man on the Moon (R.E.M) 8
    Can’t decide on these two.

    Hey Jude (Beatles) 8
    Self Esteem (Offspring) 7
Sorry Offspring, Hey Jude is just better.

when the levee breaks – 8 (that harmonica wail is so hot, but the song length keeps it sub-9)
gravel pit – 3 (i don’t understand the wutang love. this song does absolutely nothing for me.)

    superstition – 9
in the midnight hour – 8

    wild world – 6.5
man on the moon – 9

    hey jude – 7
    self esteem – 8.5

  14. Adrock's avatar Adrock says:

When the Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) 6.5

Not loving the levee this time out.

    Superstition (Stevie Wonder) 9
In the Midnight Hour (Wilson Pickett) 7.5

Totally nailed it with this matchup. I love in the midnight hour… so fun, such feeling… but superstition is one of the best ever. This is why these tournaments rock.

    Wild World (Cat Stevens) 8
Man on the Moon (R.E.M) 8.5

Wild world is so good, so simple. Man on the moon was just perfectly timed. It sometimes drags, but this time out, it was just perfect.

    Hey Jude (Beatles) 7.5
    Self Esteem (Offspring) 8

This was really hard – such wildly different styles, it’s almost like the last one was gonna win no matter what. And yet, Hey Jude is gonna win big. Oh well, it was a great listen.
