Something in the Air (Thunderclap Newman) 6 (correct version?)

Three’s a Magic Number (De La Soul) 6

Tangled Up In Blue (Bob Dylan) 9
Silent All These Years (Tori Amos) 7 (sadly, liked this much more than I thought I would. Thankfully, the cheesy ending made me drop the score down to 7)

  7. Guillermo says:

Layla (Derek and the Dominoes) 7.5
Something in the Air (Thunderclap Newman) 5

If American Girl has one of the best starts to a song, Layla might have the best start. Unfortunately, lengthy instrumentals don’t historically bode well in music tournaments.

    Free Fallin’ (Tom Petty) 8
Just Like Startin’ Over (John Lennon) 4.5

    Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones) 6
Sell Out (Reel Big Fish) 6.5

    Heavy Metal Drummer (Wilco) 6.5
Three’s a Magic Number (De La Soul) 4

I know Blind Melon just, just got knocked out, but all I wanted to hear when De La Soul started was their Schoolhouse Rock version of Three is the Magic Number.

Tangled Up In Blue (Bob Dylan) 8.5
Silent All These Years (Tori Amos) 7.5

Tori Amos was a pleasant surprise, but I’ve played TUIB too many times to not give it to ’em- 100% favorite Bob Dylan. “Some are mathematicians, some are carpenter’s wives, don’t know how it all got started, don’t know what they’ve done with their lives, but me, I’m still on the road headed for another joint, we always did feel the same, we just saw it from a different point of view- tangled up in blue.” Yes, sir.

    Tangled Up in Blue 8.5

  10. Matt says:

Layla (Derek and the Dominoes) – 10 – Obviously. D-Rock and the Dominos is my personal favorite band of all time. While this is not my favorite song of theirs, the Duane Allman riff, song, and concluding piano part easily make it one of the best songs of all time. Forget that we’ve all heard it 1,000 times and instead wonder why it’s one of the most recognizable songs of all time – sung by one of the most recognizable rockstars of all time – and most people still can’t name the band. D and the D’s one and only album is an absolute gem and no artist’s career has so simultaneously peaked and plummeted as Eric Clapton’s did with this band – heroin might have had something to do with both of these events. Either way, the improptu version of “Key to the Highway” on “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs” is one of the greatest recordings of all time, and “Layla” itself deserves a place in rock folklore not only due to its undeniably epic music but also its documentation of a love triangle between a woman and two best friends – ERIC CLAPTON and GEORGE HARRISON! What more could you want?!?!?!?! vs. Something in the Air (Thunderclap Newman) – 7

Free Fallin’ (Tom Petty) – 9 – vs. Just Like Startin’ Over (John Lennon) – 6.5

Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones) – 8 – vs. Sell Out (Reel Big Fish) – 6

    Heavy Metal Drummer (Wilco) – 5 – vs. Three’s a Magic Number (De La Soul) – 7

Tangled Up In Blue (Bob Dylan) – 9 – vs. Silent All These Years (Tori Amos) – 7

  13. Nick says:

Layla (Derek and the Dominoes) 9
Something in the Air (Thunderclap Newman) 6
Liked Something in the Air, but nowhere near as much as Layla. Ever see the Rolling Stone’s Musical Circus? Eric seems distracted by someone in the crowd…

    Free Fallin’ (Tom Petty) 8.5
Just Like Startin’ Over (John Lennon) 4
Tom Petty rocks. Yoko is a great lady, but can’t say she really did much for John musically. Going back to the Rolling Stone Musical Circus, its possible when she came out from under that sheet Eric was considering beating her over the head with his guitar…

    Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones) 6
Sell Out (Reel Big Fish) 8
The Ramones are cool, but not that musically great. Sell Out is a really funny/fun message, well executed musically.

    Heavy Metal Drummer (Wilco) 4
Three’s a Magic Number (De La Soul) 7
Wilco bores me. This song made me yawn multiple times. I like De La Soul, but somehow am not familiar with this song. Its funky and fun.

Tangled Up In Blue (Bob Dylan) 6
Silent All These Years (Tori Amos) 4
Not sure what the hubbub is about TUIB, its high energy for Bob but not particularly melodic, vocally deep, or poetic. Silent All These Years was pretty lame.

  14. janos marton says:

Layla (Derek and the Dominoes) 9.5
Something in the Air (Thunderclap Newman) 7
    A) No question Layla goes far.
    B) It’ll come down to how much people appreciate the second half piano. I love it.
    C) Anything against Layla this round was cannon fodder. I hope you enjoyed Something In the Air, it’s a nice tune.

Free Fallin’ (Tom Petty) 9.5 Thought I was bored of this song, but it’s a little too awesome.
Just Like Startin’ Over (John Lennon) 8

    Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones) 6
Sell Out (Reel Big Fish) 8.5
I’ve said it before, it’s hard for a two minute song to really register for tournament scoring purposes, which is why punk songs have it hard.
Sell-Out is one of a handful of songs that honestly knocked me off my feet the first time I heard it. I yielded to the ska craze with this bold piece of work.

    Heavy Metal Drummer (Wilco) 7
Three’s a Magic Number (De La Soul) 8
My appreciation for Magic Number, which I’ve always dug, increased during my Johnny Cash phase, when I realized they were sampling “Three Feet High and Rising (How High’s The Water Mama?)”

Tangled Up In Blue (Bob Dylan) 9
Silent All These Years (Tori Amos) 8.5
Mark Orsini discovered this song during college under the same circumstances, and that may be the reason we seem to be the only people who like it. ‘Dem were good times.

  15. Astrid says:

Layla (Derek and the Dominoes) 8 vs. Something in the Air (Thunderclap Newman) 6.5

Free Fallin’ (Tom Petty) 8.5 vs. Just Like Startin’ Over (John Lennon) 9

Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones) 9.5 vs. Sell Out (Reel Big Fish) 4

Heavy Metal Drummer (Wilco) 9 vs. Three’s a Magic Number (De La Soul) 6.5

Tangled Up In Blue (Bob Dylan) 8 vs. Silent All These Years (Tori Amos) 7
