Best Track One: Day Three Results, Last Day Of Play-In!

Gotta step up the voter numbers! Although there are still 3 1/2 hours left to vote on this round we are definitely a little low right now- tell your neighbors and tell your friends we want their votes!

The big winner of the day was “My Name Is Jonas”- we don’t have a Wall of 10’s yet, but maybe we should so we can put Weezer up there. “Loser” never had a chance and falls 79-70.5. Similarly the Traveling Wilbury’s didn’t have too much trouble with “Talking About A Revolution,” and “Handle With Care” takes that one 68.3-57.2. The other matches were too close to call at 5:00 PM…

….but 8 pm brings us home. An impressive comeback by “Tamacun” who outlasts The Flaming Lips 63.2-58.5. Last but not least- oof. Closest match yet, but “Welcome To The Jungle” ekes it out 70.1-69.8.

We’ve gotten from 48 songs down to 36 still alive- one last round of play-in before we’ve got our Round of 32 Best Track Ones. Playlist is here and votes are due by Friday, February 15th at Midnight. Good luck to all songs!

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

“Get Up, Stand Up,” Bob Marley, Burnin’ (1973): 6.5/7

“Folsom Prison Blues,” Johnny Cash, At Folsom Prison (1968) vs.

As I emerge from the hole I’ve been living in, I’d say having never heard these songs, I was pleasantly surprised with both.

    = 8 to 5

  5. emglasser says:

Get Up (I feel like being a sex machine) – 7.5
Get up, stand up – 7

In the ‘get up v. get up’ competition, this one came down to actual desire to get up and shake my money maker v. nostalgia of listening to Bob Marley in high school with a serious case of the munchies.

    Folson Prison Blues – 8
    Gloria – 5

Sorry, Patti, but I prefer Van Morrison’s version.

    Hard Knock Life – 8.2
    Let’s Go Crazy – 7

Sorry, you adorable little man in purple, I gotta root for the man who married Beyonce.

King of Carrot Flowers, pt. 1 – 5
    Neighborhood #1 – 8.7

When Arcade Fire won album of the year at the 2011 Grammy’s, my mom said, “WHO?”. Then I played her ‘the Suburbs’ and even she agreed they were awesome.

  6. jameswheeler says:

9.5- “Get Up (I Feel Like Being A Sex Machine,)” James Brown, Sex Machine (1970) vs.
7- “Get Up, Stand Up,” Bob Marley, Burnin’ (1973)
I sang Get Up all morning after listening to the matchup on the way in. My reggae bias is showing a bit here.

8.5- “Folsom Prison Blues,” Johnny Cash, At Folsom Prison (1968) vs.
4- “Gloria,” Patti Smith, Horses (1975)
    No contest.

7.5- “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem),” Jay-Z, Hard Knock Life (1998) vs.
10- “Let’s Go Crazy,” Prince, Purple Rain (1984)
Dearly Beloved, I seriously don’t know how anyone can pick Hard Knock Life over Let’s Go Crazy heralding the arrival of the funkiest purple parade ever.

6- “King of Carrot Flowers Part One,” Neutral Milk Hotel, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (1998,) vs.
5- “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels),” Arcade Fire, Funeral (2004)
Neither worthy of the rest of the entries in this tournament. Can Beck get back in through the loser’s bracket?

  7. joe says:

Get Up (I Feel Like Being A Sex Machine) James Brown 7
Get Up Stand Up, Bob Marley 9

Normally for me, sex wins but today, anger of religious and political oppression wins.

Folsom Prison Blues, Johnny Cash 7
    Gloria, Patti Smith 5

    Hard Knock Life, Jay-Z 8
Let’s Go Crazy, Prince and the Revolution 6

I love Prince’s guitar playing, and this is an epic album, but I’m feeling J today.

King of Carrot Flowers Part One, Neutral Milk Hotel 8
Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels), Arcade Fire 7.5

  10. Adrock says:

“Get Up (I Feel Like Being A Sex Machine,)” James Brown, Sex Machine (1970) vs. 6.8
“Get Up, Stand Up,” Bob Marley, Burnin’ (1973) 8.5

So, full disclosure, i forgot the tournemtn was due tonight, and was listening to the unbelievably epic, but undeniably aggressive A Farewell to Arms by Machine Head. It ended and all i could think about was doing my own tournament – and i remembered about this tournament. Why do i tell you what you don’t care about? Because James Brown is all about mood – and my mood was 100% metal…not the right mix for James. However, after James cooled me down, Marley was awesome. What a start to the one of the best sets of music we’ve ever had in a music tournament round.

“Folsom Prison Blues,” Johnny Cash, At Folsom Prison (1968) vs. 8.5
“Gloria,” Patti Smith, Horses (1975) 9

I don’t need to say anything about Cash. But Patti..damn. She’s never been my favorite, but she hit perfectly.tonight. Power and energy. SHe just would not be denied.

“Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem),” Jay-Z, Hard Knock Life (1998) 7.5
“Let’s Go Crazy,” Prince, Purple Rain (1984) 4

Prince may be purified in the waters of Lake Minnetonka, but he just befouled a great slab of music.

“King of Carrot Flowers Part One,” Neutral Milk Hotel, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (1998,) 7
“Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels),” Arcade Fire, Fneral (2004) 6

Did not know that Neutral Milk Hotel track, but lots of fun and really quirky. Cool find.

  11. Astrid says:

    James Brown 8.8
    Bob Marley 7.3

    Johnny Cash 9.5
    Patti Smith 8.9

    Jay z 6.3
    Prince 9.0

    Neutral Milk Hotel 7.7
    Arcade Fire 7.6

  12. James Brown 8.2
    Bob Marley 6.8

JB so fresh. Wailers- heard this one too many times.

    Johnny Cash- 7.8
    Patti Smith- 6.6

Yo- this is IN Folsom Prison.

    Jay Z- 6
    Prince- 6.8

This thing called life. Mighty long time. The Jay-Z song takes me back to working on my class’s high school Homecoming float freshman year. That’s about all I got on that.

    Neutral Milk Hotel 7
    Arcade Fire 8.6

Tunnels is the best soundtrack to walking your dog alone in the dark through the woods in history.
