Votes are in the bag, and Strike 1 has been awarded. “Are you serious?” Bono might be yelling. If he saw these results, that’s definitely what he’d be yelling. Final scores for Game 1: Zeppelin’s “Going To California” powers for gold with 138 points. Grabbing the silver by a few points was “Waiting For The Day” by the Beach Boys with 104.8 points. Strike 1 goes to U2- despite “Mysterious Ways”‘ commercial success, the voters did not approve, and it ends up with 102.4 points. Current standings:
Beach Boys:
Led Zeppelin:
U2: X
Game 2 coming right up! The playlist is here, and votes are due by Saturday, May 26th at Midnight. I know it’s Memorial Day weekend, so get your votes in tomorrow when everyone else is out and you are sitting at your desk doing nothing. This is a great setlist, enjoy!
Royal Rumble: Game 2
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday
The Beach Boys- I Get Around
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie *
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday 6.5
The Beach Boys- I Get Around 8
Well then. I love Sunday Bloody Sunday, but for some inexplicable reason, this one just breezed by me after the opening. No idea what happened. On the other hand, I’m not usually a big fan of I Get Around, and it absolutely hit the spot. I no longer feel good about this matchup.
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie – 4
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday – 9
The Beach Boys- I Get Around – 7
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie 4
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday 8
The Beach Boys- I Get Around 7
No strike for U2 in this one. Sunday Bloody Sunday is way better than Custard Pie.
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie – 5
Oof.
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday – 7.8
Great tune.
The Beach Boys- I Get Around – 10
THIS SONG IS AWESOME. I used to blast this driving around Montgomery County in high school. Also made famous by this movie (also awesome):
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie: 6, far from my favorite, but ok.
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday: NA
The Beach Boys- I Get Around: 8, even if you hate the beach boys you have to like this song.
Led Zeppelin – 5
U2 – 6.5
Beach Boys – 8.5
Love Flight of the Navigator. Sarah Jessica Parker’s best role ever.
Lest you forget also that Peewee Herman is the voice of the spaceship
I’m gonna nominate The Champs’ “Tequila” in the next tournament so we can all do the pee-wee herman dance.
Led Zeppelin – 5
Sunday Bloody Sunday – 10
Beach Boys – 9
“Sunday Bloody Sunday” does it for me – I love the kind of raw, militaristic qualities about it. (Nice work, Dan)
But “I Get Around” is just seminal Beach Boys. It’s only getting a 9 b/c I feel it’s slightly musically inferior. And it pains me physically to say that.
Led who?
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie: 6.5 This is a solid opening track, a la Planet Telex or Zoo Station, but it’s not quite music tournament material.
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday: 8.2 Dan can probably just play War for the rest of the tournament.
The Beach Boys- I Get Around: NA
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie: 5.6
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday: 7
The Beach Boys- I Get Around: 8.9
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie: 8
It may not be a classic Led Zeppelin song but it’s still a solid track. They rarely disappoint and always satisfy my rock fixation.
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday: 9
Crap, this is a good ass song. U2’s early music always surprises me, it’s a shame that Bono’s voice is akin to slamming my head into a car door until my brain is a fine jelly mash. Absolutely continue with songs off of War and this competition will be all but over.
The Beach Boys- I Get Around: 3
I wish I was still a kid and had those naive thoughts of how great the Beach Boys were. Most of their music was not made for our generation, but that does not mean we can’t listen to and appreciate their music. It’s fun and whimsical, but at the end of the day it’s sadly juvenile.
Kudos though G-mo on the Flight of the Navigator reference. Looks like I have a few childhood memories to rehash over the long weekend. Now, if I could only figure out a way to smuggle children properly in lunch carts.
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie – 5.5
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday – 5.5
The Beach Boys- I Get Around – 6.5
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie – 5.5
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday – 7.0
The Beach Boys- I Get Around – 6.5
Okay, Guillermo, your email worked! I know I haven’t been voting, and I can’t say it’s for any other reason that I got real sick of Led Zeppelin. On top of that, I’m in the mood for new music, so as much as I like some of the bands… they’re played out.
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie — 2
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday — 5
Actually, I don’t care much for U2 either. This is objectively pretty, but is so overplayed that it hasn’t done anything for me for years.
The Beach Boys- I Get Around — 7
I think I mentioned this early on in the Beach Boys’ run, but I got a bunch of old records from my uncle, which included “Holland,” one of their later albumbs. Brian Wilson had really fallen apart, but he held it together sometimes for this album. I’ve been listening to it a lot the lsat few months. I had no idea the Beach Boys made music like that.
Haha no I appreciate your candor- we’re on the home stretch here. Thanks for coming back to vote!
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie – 7
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday – 9
The Beach Boys- I Get Around – 10
Great round!
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie 7
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday 9.5
The Beach Boys- I Get Around 6.5
Led Zeppelin- Custard Pie 7
I really like this song. I love this version by Page and the Black Crowes (compliments to Ensign Denson)
U2- Sunday Bloody Sunday 4
My brother once showed me a live performance of this song on YouTube. Halfway through Bono came marching onto stage with a big American Flag waving overhead. Intertwined with the context of the song it was pretty obvious he was trying to make some overt, profound political statement. It ended up just being an overt, superficial political statement. The song is cool and sounds good. But I just can’t get past how lame Bono can be, sometimes. That’s when I started hating U2. My wife has since calmed me down. And I now like U2 enough. But this one to me is kind of like what the Invasion of Poland must be for German historians.
The Beach Boys- I Get Around 5
Don’t have the energy to discuss more. Just don’t particularly care for it.
George,
This is the tour I wish I saw. I’m still kicking myself that I missed it.
