Round of 128: Division A

Mumford looks ready to go. Do they have what it takes?

128 songs have waited in the wings, rubbing their hands together to see how the rest of the road to the Sweet Sixteen will look for them. The waiting is over, and the divisions are out. Division A is full of some good looking battles- Grooveshark link is here. Listen to the match-ups and give each song a score between 0 and 10 by commenting on the post. The rules are here, follow your hearts, and let the best song advance to the Division semi-final.

Mumford and Sons highlights Division A; “Little Lion Man” is one of only two songs to retain a 1 seed in both the old and the new seeding system. This energetic yet heartfelt reflection of a song pairs off against “Home” by Zero 7. Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker of Z7 began their careers as sound engineers for Pet Shop Boys, Robert Plant, and Radiohead before striking out on their own.

Division A’s 4 seed ends up “Here Comes My Baby”- many are familiar with the Cat Stevens’ original version, but perhaps not with 90’s neocountry band The Mavericks’ more upbeat interpretation of the song. HCMB is up against Belleruche’s “Clockwatching.” Band frontwoman Kathrin Deboer’s website bio starts with “raised on a pirate boat sailing the South Pacific Ocean, with only Billie Holiday and Spanky Wilson records for company, Kathrins voice carries the soul of the wind off the cape mixed with the grit of illegal Polynesian rum bars.

The 2-7 match is a British Isles battle between two of the most unique and influential musical acts to emerge in the post-Beatles era. Like a second Tan War 90 years removed, U2 and David Bowie tap gloves to see who will advance one more round.

Sharin Foo of The Raveonettes

Last but not least, the Bronx goes to battle with Denmark. The line in “Time After Time” that says “the second hand unwinds” refers to Cyndi Lauper’s producer’s watch with ran backwards, in case you thought it was deeper than that (as I did until just now.) On the other side, the Raveonettes come with a 21st century response- reported biggest influences include The Everly Brothers and The Velvet Underground.

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

Scores for me/my sister Claire/ my brother Brendan/ his girlfriend Caitlin:

Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons): 10/8.2 /7.1 /7.5
    Home (Zero 7): 5/2.7 /2.5 /4.5

B: Little Lion Man- very good song, however not the best on a decent album. Home is just uninspiring.
C: I feel like Home can be in any movie.

Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks): 7.5/6.5 /6 /7.2
    Clockwatching (Belleruche): 6.5/4.5 /3 /6

    Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2): 7/7 /6.8 /7.1
Sound And Vision (David Bowie): 4.5/5/4.7/6

B: I like U2 but it just wasn’t what I was looking for. I’m giving Sound and Vision a little bump cus it’s David Bowie, but it sounds like creepy Bowie.

Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper): 7.5/8.5 /6.4 /9
    Bang! (The Raveonettes): 6/6.5 /5.8 /7.4

B: I kinda wish they were the Raisinettes

  2. Lolly says:

Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons) = 8.5
    Home (Zero 7) = 3

Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks) = 5
    Clockwatching (Belleruche) = 6

    Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2) = 9
Sound And Vision (David Bowie) = 3

Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) = 7.5
    Bang! (The Raveonettes) = 5.5

  3. Mark B says:

#1 Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons): 10
    #8 Home (Zero 7): 5.5
I love Mumford and Sons more and more. And i don’t think it’s just a phase…I feel like I’ll remember this song in years to come. Home is definitely nice and I do like Zero 7, but no comparison here really. ‘Destiny’ would have had a much better shot.

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks): 2
    #5 Clockwatching (Belleruche): 4
I don’t think either of these songs are very good. Mavericks makes me cringe so much; I think Belleruche is very average and forgettable.

    #2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2): 7
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie): 9
Wow, the big boys face off. Sometimes I struggle to figure out why U2 is such a big band. They’ve only had a couple of really good songs, right? Doesn’t make sense to me. This is a great song, no doubt but the fact that Bono is such a tit alongside the fact that I feel like they’re bigger than they should be really irks me. I love David Bowie and I think this track is understated genius.

#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper): 9.5
    #6 Bang! (The Raveonettes): 5
Oh come ON. How can you not love Time After Time. Guillermo, please unleash that Romy and Michelle video on us again. I haven’t figured out how to embed yet. Raveonette gets major negative points for truly hideous lyrics (e.g. “you’re as cool as icecream”)

    • chris roomba says:

Not a U2 fan, but I want to make their case. JUST A COUPLE OF GOOD SONGS?!?! U2 is the transcendent band of the 80s…still making good music after all this time…From the 80s there are U2 and Bon Jovi still releasing albums and U2 is the better of the two. Everyone else fell by the wayside in the last 30 years. It’s kind of like Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones or Pearl Jam, longevity helps…a LOT

Now, a couple of really good songs? Here is disc 1 of their Best of album 1980-1990 (so just 1 decade). Everyone song is great…

      No. Title Album Length
      1. “Pride (In the Name of Love)” The Unforgettable Fire 3:48
      2. “New Year’s Day” (Special version) War 4:17
      3. “With or Without You” The Joshua Tree 4:55
      4. “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” The Joshua Tree 4:38
      5. “Sunday Bloody Sunday” War 4:40
      6. “Bad” (Best Of edit) The Unforgettable Fire 5:50
      7. “Where the Streets Have No Name” (Best Of edit) The Joshua Tree 4:35

      15. “October” (hidden track) October 2:20
      Total length:

Since then, they’ve produced the following “really good songs”:
      One and Mysterious Ways (1991)
      Lemon (1993)
Discothèque and If God will send his Angels (1997)
Beautiful Day, Walk On, and Stuck in a Moment (2000)
Vertigo and City of Blinding Lights (2004)

      • dj roomba says:

I’m so bored by all of the U2 songs on your list, Chris. I’m with Mark B, I just don’t get why people like them so much. And I think they should quit already, I’m sick of hearing about them. (I know, I know, they still draw huge crowds… but why!? I’ll never know.) Blah.

      • Mark B says:

well thank god I have one Roomba on my side…hallelujah to the dj variety.

In all seriousness, I do like this debate though…I’ve already weighed in with my opinion but, to respond, I definitely do not think that every one fo those songs is great. Personally, I think 40% of them are good, not great.

    #2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2): 4
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie): 2

    #6 Bang! (The Raveonettes): 5.5

  5. chris roomba says:

#1 Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons): 10 – the surprise sound of the last year. Such brazen use of the F- – – word that I can’t play it with my daughter in the car…but don’t hesitate any time she’s not around. They have a really earthy, irish, folk combination sound that is inescapably good.
    #8 Home (Zero 7):2 – Blah.

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks): 6 – Still love the brass in the background, and in the singer’s voice.
    #5 Clockwatching (Belleruche): 1 – Woof!

#2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2): 9 – 15 year old me is looking longingly out a bus window on the Jersey turnpike, on his way home. ‘Nuff said.
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie): 3.33 – Very David Bowie…which sometimes just isn’t great. It’s just okay.

#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper): 5 – I always hated the intro to this, but really like the blend of the two voices in the chorus. It puts me in a weird position. Romy & Michelle actually hurt this song’s ranking.
#6 Bang! (The Raveonettes): 6 – I like when rock bands have female singers. It’s kind of cool.

  6. asf says:

#1 Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons) – 6.4 – I find the banjo distracting.
    #8 Home (Zero 7) – 7.4

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks) – 7.7
    #5 Clockwatching (Belleruche) – 7.7

    #2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2) – 2 – I hate this song.
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie) – 10 – This song is one of my favorite Bowie songs.

#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) – 6 – This song drags, but the chorus is good.
    #6 Bang! (The Raveonettes) – 5.5

    • asf says:

I haven’t been compelled to write a lengthy comment about a song yet, but I really love this song, and I think it deserves a little bit of background, so here goes. (For the record, I did not nominate Sound and Vision, but thanks to whoever did, as this is an all time favorite.)

Sound and Vision is the first single off of the album Low, which in turn is the first installment of what has become known as Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy (Low, Lodger, Heroes). Bowie collaborated with Brian Eno on all of these albums. (As a side note, Eno also produced– and provided backing vocals– on I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.)

At the end of the day, while I’m sure some may be drawn into the cleaner pop styles of Bowie’s output, the Berlin Trilogy is considered some of his best work and the experimentation found within gave direction to several genres that defined the late 70’s and early 80’s (post punk, new wave and industrial).

May the best Eno collaboration win.

  7. Mark O says:

#1 Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons) [7.5]
    #8 Home (Zero 7) [4]

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks) [6]
    #5 Clockwatching (Belleruche) [4]

    #2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2) [9]
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie) [4.5]

#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) [8]
    #6 Bang! (The Raveonettes) [5]

  8. The Thin White Duke says:

#1 Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons) 4 I’m not getting on the Mumford and Sons bandwagon. This is not special music. It’s like twangy Dave Matthews.
    #8 Home (Zero 7) 6

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks) 5 This sounds a whole lot like the original. Why not just nominate the original?
    #5 Clockwatching (Belleruche) 6

    #2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2) 6
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie) 10
I know Bowie’s sunk, but this song is a hell of a lot more interesting than most of what’s gotten through to the second round. Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For is good enough though, so I’m not too bummed to see another of my nominations eat it.

#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) 8
    #6 Bang! (The Raveonettes) 7

  9. aikoko says:

Voting today from San Francisco and on a real computer, even. But I’m feeling kind of under the weather, so music is falling a little flat this morning.

#1 Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons) 9
    #8 Home (Zero 7) 3

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks) 5
    #5 Clockwatching (Belleruche) 9.6
The guy from the Mavricks has a really nice voice but I can’t help but picture a jam festival when I hear it, and that’s just not my scene. I’ve heard Clockwatching what feels like dozens of times in the past couple of weeks and was actually expecting to feel burnt out on it, but it still sounded awesome. It has this chill intensity that felt about perfect this morning.

    #2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2) 4.5
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie) 9
U2, I found what I was looking for this morning, and it was Bowie. I think Brian Eno must be like salt. Overdone or with the wrong dish it’s just intolerable, but added to the right thing it can really enhance the flavor.

#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) 8.4
    #6 Bang! (The Raveonettes) 8.2
They played Time After Time at my friend’s wedding on Saturday and we attempted to do the Romy and Michelle dance but we didn’t actually know it, so that was too bad. And not a very good story now that I type it out. I love what the Raveonettes do… bubble-gum 60s pop with a dark twist.

I’ve always found SHFWILF to be incredibly irksome and a bit of an extended complaint. Music tournaments are rapidly growing my appreciation of the Bowie- for this I thank you all.

#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) 8.7
    #6 Bang! (The Raveonettes) 6.9

  17. Nick Heyming says:

Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons): 8.5
    Home (Zero 7): 4.7
    Not even close.

Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks): 5.4
    Clockwatching (Belleruche): 6.3
There are better versions of Here Comes My Baby. Clockwatching was enjoyable, nice bass line.

    Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2): 5.2
Sound And Vision (David Bowie): 6.4
U2 is ok. Good at what they do. I just don’t like what they do a whole lot.
Bowie was better than I was expecting.

Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper): 2.2
    Bang! (The Raveonettes): 2.1
Time After Time hurt my soul.
    Bang! was painfully saccharine.

Been really busy the past few weeks, plus it seemed like all my songs were getting cynically slaughtered (especially the hip hop ones). If these are indicative of the kinds of songs I was missing, I don’t know how much longer I can take this tournament. Mumford and Sons was the only one on here I’d seek out to listen to.

  18. Jack says:

#1 Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons)- 7
    #8 Home (Zero 7)- 6

Think I would like Mumford more if it wasn’t always on the radio these days.

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks)- 4
    #5 Clockwatching (Belleruche)-?
Not sure if its just me but Clockwatching isn’t working on Grooveshark and it looks like I was pulled off youtube. If I don’t post again with a score for it don’t count either, I suppose.

    #2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2)-4.5
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie)-8.5
It’s amazing that Bowie is still only the second coolest artist left in this division.

#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper)- 10
    #6 Bang! (The Raveonettes)-7
The Raveonettes are jumpy. I like them. Cyndi was my lone submission which somehow I managed to miss voting on in the first round. So let me say a few things about it. Obviously, it scores pretty well on the nostalgia front and thats part of why it scores well but I think theres lots to recommend it other than that… to the point where a few years ago I put it in a list of my top 5 songs. There is some irony to the song becoming a staple of 80’s nostalgia since it is already so *about* nostalgia and memory. The song strikes me as being nostalgic about itself- given Lauper’s references to the recording process. Which isn’t to say the song is just an exercise in self-reference. Rather, I think it captures that occasional recognition of the present as something you will look back on with affection and longing. It’s the “this is a moment I will treasure forever feeling” but it is combined with the anticipation of regret and longing for lost days. There is a sense of time going too fast for us to appreciate our life- Cyndi is always falling behind or walking too far ahead. It is extremely rare for a catchy, emotionally engaging pop song to capture the nuance and duality of impermanence, memory and awareness. I think it is fitting then that one’s initial reaction to the song can be so about the the song’s own time despite how universal the message is. A song like this *had* to age. A timeless sound would be incongruent with the emotions the track captures.

    #2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2) – 8.0
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie) – 5.0

  20. The Progenitor says:

#1 Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons) – 7.5 Still like this one! A lot!
#8 Home (Zero 7) – 6.5 Soothing!! Maybe too much so as I nodded off.

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks) – 10.0 Its still summer and my feet are still dancing to this one – orthotics and all.
#5 Clockwatching (Belleruche) – 5.5 OK but I nodded off on this one, too.

#2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2) – 8.0 Still a great song and another good oldie, though not so old as some.
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie) – 6.0 OK but that’s not good enough for this pairing.

#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) – 6.5 Still like this one but it is starting to wear a little thin.
#6 Bang! (The Raveonettes) – 4.0 Only one is this group I did not care for at all.

  21. dj roomba says:

#1 Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons) – 9.5
    #8 Home (Zero 7) – 3
The more Home continued on the more I really started to hate it. I actually wanted to go back and play Little Lion Man again.

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks) – 7
    #5 Clockwatching (Belleruche) – 3
I don’t think I voted on Here Comes My Baby, but I really liked it.

    #2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2) – 4
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie) – 7
Sorry, I hate U2 and I have a soft spot for Bowie. Mark B pretty much sums up everything I’ve been feeling about U2 in this snippet: “The fact that Bono is such a tit alongside the fact that I feel like they’re bigger than they should be really irks me.” WHY DOES EVERYONE LOVE BONO!? I don’t get the appeal there.

#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) – 9.5
    #6 Bang! (The Raveonettes) – 6.8
I will never not love Time After Time. I can’t remember how I rated Bang the first time, but tonight I was in the mood for it.

I’m loving the new re-seeding by the way. I think it was a great idea and has added new life to the tournament. Thanks to the organizers for setting this up and letting all of us play!

    • chris roomba says:

I’d like to put it out there for both the other roomba and Mark B…I actually think Bono is a bleeding-heart tool. The Edge is a pretty good guitarist, however. U2 kind of does a really good job of doing what they do: they play solid, conventional rock, and can do a lot of things. They don’t try to be something they’re not (except on Pop).

Joshua Tree is a transcendent album. How many bands have an entire album that’s a true masterpiece? Now add Achtung Baby. That’s a second solid masterpiece which isn’t like Joshua Tree in the slightest, except it’s the same guy. Those two albums have some pretty good songs. Collectively, each album is greater than the sum of their parts. Those are 80s and 90s. In the last 10 years, they’ve done a great job of releasing songs that hit.

Now, if Bono could suture up that bleeding heart, and keep his nose out of every freaking cause, I might like him better.

  22. zd says:

Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons): 8
    Home (Zero 7): 2
B: Little Lion Man- great song, but depressing and not the best song on the album
C: Home – no diceeel like Home can be in any movie.

Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks): 1
    Clockwatching (Belleruche): 4
Here comes my baby – doesn’t take much talent to remake a song in the exact same likeness as the original…..cat stevens would score an 8

    Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2): 9
Sound And Vision (David Bowie): 3
    hands down…surprised we’re debating this.

Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper): 6
    Bang! (The Raveonettes): 7
first time for Bang!, interesting song. have a feeling it’ll grow on me…will come in handy during those moments when i need a look on the bright side.

    10= Perfect

Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons) = 8.7
    Home (Zero 7) = 5

Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks) = 6.5 [reminds me of Roy Orbison]
Clockwatching (Belleruche) = 8 [when a simple dance song get me, it gets extra points since it’s not a genre I typically like.]

Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2) = 4.5 [I always think that I like this song and then I hear it and it falls flat- perhaps because it literally has no arc.]
Sound And Vision (David Bowie) = 9.3 [so far before its time it’s absurd. I really thought this match up was going to be closer.]

Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) = 7 [this could go all the way.]
Bang! (The Raveonettes) = 10 [my nom gets nommed be the reseed. So it goes!]

#1 Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons) = 3. Starting to really grate on me. When he holds a note I def wanna reach for the fork and kiss my hearing goodbye.
    #8 Home (Zero 7) = 2

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks) = 5.5. Bad cover of a good song. Unless this is the original. Def don’t care.
    #5 Clockwatching (Belleruche) = 3

    #2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2) = 8.5
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie) = 4

#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) = 7
    #6 Bang! (The Raveonettes) = 6.5

Alright, that’s it. I gotta go home and put some food in Buck Nasty’s momma’s dish.

    #8 Home (Zero 7) – 6

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks) – 5
    #5 Clockwatching (Belleruche) – 5

    #2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2) – 9.8

#1 Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons): 7.3
    #8 Home (Zero 7): 5

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks): 7
    #5 Clockwatching (Belleruche): 7.4
This matchup gave me some hesitation. Here Comes My Baby was the better song, but this cover adds nothing to the original. Thus, gotta go with Clockwatching.

#2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2): 6.8 – A strong song, but I’d rank it as the fourth best song on Joshua Tree, behind Where the Streets…, With or Without You, and Running to Stand Still. Generally, however, I agree with Chris Roomba.
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie): 8.1

#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper): 6.3 – This reminds me of a movie I don’t want to watch (if that’s Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion (really?) so be it.)
#6 Bang! (The Raveonettes): 10 – This is pretty much a perfect summer song when you’re stuck inside at work.

  27. Maureen says:

Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons): 8.5
    Home (Zero 7): 5.5
I think I liked Home more the first time around. But I heart LLM.

Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks): 7.3
    Clockwatching (Belleruche): 7.3
Definitely missed the first round match up with HCMB – but I likes it. I am okay with covers. Still enjoying Clockwatching – can’t decide which one I like more. I leave it to the People

    Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2): 6.5
Sound And Vision (David Bowie): 8.5
Loving me some David Bowie this morning. I listened to DB for my entire commute this morning and that dude is amazing.

Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper): 7.1
    Bang! (The Raveonettes): 5

One of my favorite songs for one of my favorite purposes

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks) – 6
    #5 Clockwatching (Belleruche) – 7.5
    #2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2) – 6
I prefer the Rattle & Hum version

#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie) – 8
#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) – 8.5
    #6 Bang! (The Raveonettes) – 5

I’m here to defend my awards…

Little Lion Man: 9 (shocking!). It would be a 10 if every radio station didn’t have this song on repeat.
    Home: 3.

Here comes my baby: 2 Too campy and country.
Clockwatching: 7. It was flirting with being too long and dropping to a 6.

Still Haven’t Found: 5. U2 from the 80s, great. Current U2, hang it up.
    Sound and Vision: 3

    Time after Time: 5.
Bang!: 1. It felt too much like a jingle for a commercial.

  30. Adrock says:

#1 Little Lion Man (Mumford and Sons) 8.5
    #8 Home (Zero 7) 7.8

The brass in Home nearly overcame LLM – but it was not to be. Definitely buying it though.

#4 Here Comes My Baby (The Mavericks) 8
    #5 Clockwatching (Belleruche) 5

    #2 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For (U2) 6.5
#7 Sound And Vision (David Bowie) 6

#3 Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) 7
    #6 Bang! (The Raveonettes) 5
