Mumford looks ready to go. Do they have what it takes?
128 songs have waited in the wings, rubbing their hands together to see how the rest of the road to the Sweet Sixteen will look for them. The waiting is over, and the divisions are out. Mumford and Sons highlights Division A; “Little Lion Man” is one of only two songs to retain a 1 seed in both the old and the new seeding system. This energetic yet heartfelt reflection of a song pairs off against “Home” by Zero 7. Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker of Z7 began their careers as sound engineers for Pet Shop Boys, Robert Plant, and Radiohead before striking out on their own.
Division A’s 4 seed ends up “Here Comes My Baby”- many are familiar with the Cat Stevens’ original version, but perhaps not with 90’s neocountry band The Mavericks’ more upbeat interpretation of the song. HCMB is up against Belleruche’s “Clockwatching.” Band frontwoman Kathrin Deboer’s website bio starts with “raised on a pirate boat sailing the South Pacific Ocean, with only Billie Holiday and Spanky Wilson records for company, Kathrins voice carries the soul of the wind off the cape mixed with the grit of illegal Polynesian rum bars.
The 2-7 match is a British Isles battle between two of the most unique and influential musical acts to emerge in the post-Beatles era. Like a second Tan War 90 years removed, U2 and David Bowie tap gloves to see who will advance one more round.

Last but not least, the Bronx goes to battle with Denmark. The line in “Time After Time” that says “the second hand unwinds” refers to Cyndi Lauper’s producer’s watch with ran backwards, in case you thought it was deeper than that (as I did until just now.) On the other side, the Raveonettes come with a 21st century response- reported biggest influences include The Everly Brothers and The Velvet Underground.

Wow, the big boys face off. Sometimes I struggle to figure out why U2 is such a big band. They’ve only had a couple of really good songs, right? Doesn’t make sense to me. This is a great song, no doubt but the fact that Bono is such a tit alongside the fact that I feel like they’re bigger than they should be really irks me. I love David Bowie and I think this track is understated genius.

Not a U2 fan, but I want to make their case. JUST A COUPLE OF GOOD SONGS?!?! U2 is the transcendent band of the 80s…still making good music after all this time…From the 80s there are U2 and Bon Jovi still releasing albums and U2 is the better of the two. Everyone else fell by the wayside in the last 30 years. It’s kind of like Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones or Pearl Jam, longevity helps…a LOT

I haven’t been compelled to write a lengthy comment about a song yet, but I really love this song, and I think it deserves a little bit of background, so here goes. (For the record, I did not nominate Sound and Vision, but thanks to whoever did, as this is an all time favorite.)
Sound and Vision is the first single off of the album Low, which in turn is the first installment of what has become known as Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy (Low, Lodger, Heroes). Bowie collaborated with Brian Eno on all of these albums. (As a side note, Eno also produced– and provided backing vocals– on I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.)
At the end of the day, while I’m sure some may be drawn into the cleaner pop styles of Bowie’s output, the Berlin Trilogy is considered some of his best work and the experimentation found within gave direction to several genres that defined the late 70’s and early 80’s (post punk, new wave and industrial).
May the best Eno collaboration win.

The guy from the Mavricks has a really nice voice but I can’t help but picture a jam festival when I hear it, and that’s just not my scene. I’ve heard Clockwatching what feels like dozens of times in the past couple of weeks and was actually expecting to feel burnt out on it, but it still sounded awesome. It has this chill intensity that felt about perfect this morning.

The Raveonettes are jumpy. I like them. Cyndi was my lone submission which somehow I managed to miss voting on in the first round. So let me say a few things about it. Obviously, it scores pretty well on the nostalgia front and thats part of why it scores well but I think theres lots to recommend it other than that… to the point where a few years ago I put it in a list of my top 5 songs. There is some irony to the song becoming a staple of 80’s nostalgia since it is already so *about* nostalgia and memory. The song strikes me as being nostalgic about itself- given Lauper’s references to the recording process. Which isn’t to say the song is just an exercise in self-reference. Rather, I think it captures that occasional recognition of the present as something you will look back on with affection and longing. It’s the “this is a moment I will treasure forever feeling” but it is combined with the anticipation of regret and longing for lost days. There is a sense of time going too fast for us to appreciate our life- Cyndi is always falling behind or walking too far ahead. It is extremely rare for a catchy, emotionally engaging pop song to capture the nuance and duality of impermanence, memory and awareness. I think it is fitting then that one’s initial reaction to the song can be so about the the song’s own time despite how universal the message is. A song like this *had* to age. A timeless sound would be incongruent with the emotions the track captures.

I will never not love Time After Time. I can’t remember how I rated Bang the first time, but tonight I was in the mood for it.

I’d like to put it out there for both the other roomba and Mark B…I actually think Bono is a bleeding-heart tool. The Edge is a pretty good guitarist, however. U2 kind of does a really good job of doing what they do: they play solid, conventional rock, and can do a lot of things. They don’t try to be something they’re not (except on Pop).
Joshua Tree is a transcendent album. How many bands have an entire album that’s a true masterpiece? Now add Achtung Baby. That’s a second solid masterpiece which isn’t like Joshua Tree in the slightest, except it’s the same guy. Those two albums have some pretty good songs. Collectively, each album is greater than the sum of their parts. Those are 80s and 90s. In the last 10 years, they’ve done a great job of releasing songs that hit.
Now, if Bono could suture up that bleeding heart, and keep his nose out of every freaking cause, I might like him better.
