Round of 64: Divisions G and H Semi-Finals

Votes are due by 8 PM EST on Thursday, April 7th: Both Division G and H feature songs with major fan favorite backing (Jimi- Dr. J, Bruce- Mark O, Tom- Colin, Marshall- Grant…having a spreadsheet that has everyone’s historical scores is fascinating) so we’ll see where the remaining voter populace goes from here, as well as how the songs will stack up with this rampant new hypercritical scoring system a lot of us are using. Notable surviving lower seeds include #7 Night Moves and #11 Lose Yourself, so we will also see how those stack up against a 3 seed and a 2 seed respectively.

Grooveshark link is here except for Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. Vote by commenting on this post or by e-mailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com- votes are due by Thursday, April 7th at 8 pm EST. Best of luck to all songs

Division G Semi-Finals

#1 All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) vs. #4 With Or Without You (U2)

Division H Semi-Finals

#2 American Girl (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) vs. #11 Lose Yourself (Eminem)

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

  1. Bring the Shutdown says:

1 All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) 9 vs. #4 With Or Without You (U2) 7

#3 Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) 5 vs. #7 Night Moves (Bob Seger) 6

#1 Baba O’Riley (The Who) 8 vs. #4 You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) 5

#2 American Girl (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) 10 vs. #11 Lose Yourself (Eminem) 4

  2. Marc says:

1 All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) 9.5
    #4 With Or Without You (U2) 6.5

#3 Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) 3.5
#7 Night Moves (Bob Seger) 4

    #1 Baba O’Riley (The Who) 7.5
#4 You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) 6.5

#2 American Girl (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) 9
    #11 Lose Yourself (Eminem) 5.5

  3. The Catholic says:

All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) 9.1
With Or Without You (U2) 3.5
Sorry Bono. Jimi is in a completely different class.

    Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) 1.5
    Night Moves (Bob Seger) 8.1
Alot of sweaty emotion from these two guys, but Thunder Road had everyone in the room grimacing and groaning whereas Night Moves slapped smiles on our faces.

    Baba O’Riley (The Who) 9.6
You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) 5.4
Baba O’Riley is such a cool song. The instrument work is phenomenal, great vocals too. You Can Call Me Al is catchy, but dated.

American Girl (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) 8.6
    Lose Yourself (Eminem) 4.9
Lose Yourself doesn’t have the chops to get much further in this tournament. American Girl is classic.

  4. Adrock says:

#1 All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) 10
    #4 With Or Without You (U2) 7.1

Jimi is just untouchable with that guitar solo. U2 was in the mid 8’s for me, but the song seems to lose its way over the last 45 seconds or so of largely wasted air.

#3 Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) 3
#7 Night Moves (Bob Seger) 5.1

    #1 Baba O’Riley (The Who) 4.3
#4 You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) 6.5

Just wasn’t feeling the Who. Sounded flat and even the unreal opening couldn’t boost this song into the upper echelon. Paul made me smile and bop along and was I nice post-lunch meeting tonic.

#2 American Girl (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) 4
    #11 Lose Yourself (Eminem) 9

  5. natalie says:

all along the watchtower – 7
with or without you – 9.9
jimi is, no doubt, fantastic, but i really needed that dose of u2 this afternoon.

thunder road – 4.6 (feeling nicer than last round?)
night moves – 6.1 (so much potential, but 2 min too long)

    baba o’riley – 7
you can call me al – 5.3

    american girl – 9
    lose yourself – 8.5
damn… petty ended up getting the higher score because i was more excited to give it a 2nd listen than eminem, but lose yourself still hits the spot

  6. DrJ says:

All Along the Watchtower (Hendrix) 10
With Or Without You (U2) 5

    Thunder Road (Springsteen) 9
    Night Moves (Seger)

  7. DrJ says:

    sorry, hit the wrong key
    Night Moves (Seger) 8.5

    Baba O’Riley (Who) 9
You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) 4

American Girl (Tom Petty &…) 4
    Lose Yourself (Eminem) 5

  8. Kate M says:

Ok, had some co-workers join. Our votes will come in two parts: First two matchups are below:

    Watchtower
    Kate: 3
Dennys:8 (Dennys is Honduran and adds to our intl flair)
    Dave:7

    With or Without You

I could listen to this song on repeat, all day long…

    Kate: 10
    Dennys: 7
    Dave: 3

    Thunder Road

Both sentimental favorites for me, I hate match ups where I have to eliminate one!

    Kate: 6
    Dennys: 8
    Dave: 6

    Night Moves
At the end of the day, this evokes the most memories, and isn’t that one of the roles of music? Night Moves, recalls MTV Spring Break, roadtripping to Louisiana for the end of the week ceremony and deHuff and G-mo making a mold suit for my cousin’s doll out of napkins and milk caps…

    Kate: 8
    Dennys: 10
    Dave:7

The next two matchups will come after lunch.

  9. Kate M says:

Ok, here is the rest of the votes from our continent:

    Baba O’Riley
    Dave: 8
    Dennys: 7
    Kate: 5
    Kevin:8

    Call me Al
    Dave: 7
    Dennys: 9
    Kate: 6
    Kevin: 6

    Lose Yourself
    Dave: 1
    Dennys: 5
    Kate:3
    Kevin:4

  10. Kate M says:

Whoops I forgot to put up our American Girl votes:

    Dave: 3
    Dennys: 4
    Kate: 5
    Kevin: 6

  11. Danno says:

1 All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) 6.5
    #4 With Or Without You (U2) 7.5
    Just not feeling Jimi today…

#3 Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) 8
#7 Night Moves (Bob Seger) 6

    #1 Baba O’Riley (The Who) 8
#4 You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) 7.9

#2 American Girl (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) 8
    #11 Lose Yourself (Eminem) 9

  12. guillermo olivos says:

    Division G Semi-Finals

#1 All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) 5
    #4 With Or Without You (U2) 5

#3 Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) 11
#7 Night Moves (Bob Seger) 5.3

There are ten different individual lines in Thunder Road that make my heart skip. This song is like a poem that’s like a song. Everything I believe about leaps of faith, grittiness, love, porches, and driving is encapsulated in this song. The lyrics, the piano, the crescendo, the sax, all of it, all of it. This is Bruce’s last stand, and in no world should it lose to Night Moves (which I also really like.) So there goes my 11.

(New voters: we also have a rule that if you recruit someone new to the tournament you get exactly one 11 to give in exactly one match-up in the whole tournament. A lot of us have been saving them for later rounds, I think this is the 3rd or 4th to go. I didn’t want to use it this early, but I’m not ok with the Boss exiting the tournament on this match-up. It’s a town full of losers, but he’s aiming to win.)

    Division H Semi-Finals

    #1 Baba O’Riley (The Who) 6
#4 You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) 8.2

This is completely a function of Thunder Road putting me in the mood. When you turn the volume all the way up on YCCMA, its pretty awesome.

#2 American Girl (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) 8.4
    #11 Lose Yourself (Eminem) 10

    Verse three.

  13. Meghan says:

All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) 5.5
With Or Without You (U2) 6

    Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) 5
    Night Moves (Bob Seger) 4

    Baba O’Riley (The Who) 6
You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) 8

American Girl (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) 7
    Lose Yourself (Eminem) 9

  14. Janos says:

#1 All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) 7.6
    #4 With Or Without You (U2) 6.8

#3 Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) 10
#7 Night Moves (Bob Seger) 2.5
Thunder Road is a two-time Janos Music Tournament champion and arguably the best rock song of all time. The lyrics are haunting, the build-up is patient and the closing is powerful. Night Moves might be my least favorite song still in the tournament.

    #1 Baba O’Riley (The Who) 10
#4 You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) 6.5
Actually Baba O’Riley and You Can Call Me Al are both also former personal tournament winners. Much love to both, but Baba felt unstoppable today.

#2 American Girl (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) 7.2
    #11 Lose Yourself (Eminem) 6.5

  15. Mark O says:

#1 All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) [6]
    #4 With Or Without You (U2) [8.5]

#3 Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) [11]
#7 Night Moves (Bob Seger) [2]
Defensive voting. A boy from New Jersey has to do what a boy from New Jersey has to do. Sorry Bob.

    #1 Baba O’Riley (The Who) [6.25]
#4 You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) [8.75]

#2 American Girl (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) [8.5]
    #11 Lose Yourself (Eminem) [8]

  16. Dinah says:

    I’m loving this…

    Watchtower (8)
    With or Without You (7)

    Thunder Road (6)
    Night Moves (4)

    Baba O’Riley (6)
    Al (5)

    American Girl (8)
    Lose Yourself (4)

  17. Ogden says:

#1 All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) 7
    #4 With Or Without You (U2) 8.5

#3 Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) 7
#7 Night Moves (Bob Seger) 7

    #1 Baba O’Riley (The Who) 8
#4 You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) 5

#2 American Girl (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) 9
    #11 Lose Yourself (Eminem) 6

  18. bessaface says:

    Division G Semi-Finals

#1 All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) 6
    #4 With Or Without You (U2) 5

i have no real stake in the above. i usually opt out when i come across either from early-life over saturation.

#3 Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) 10
#7 Night Moves (Bob Seger) 2

i am and have always been convinced that bob seger is a berenstain bears no girls allowed kind of thing. challenge me. i’m okay with who i am on this.
and when that screen door slams, my heart is always taken back to the drag of highway connecting the wantagh parkway to jones beach when the sun is going down. perfect.

    Division H Semi-Finals

    #1 Baba O’Riley (The Who) 5
#4 You Can Call Me Al (Paul Simon) 10

spinning in infinity. hell to the yay!

#2 American Girl (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) 8
    #11 Lose Yourself (Eminem) 7

love them both probably equally. the differential is just to agitate gco.

  19. Astrid says:
