Division G stories: If this tournament was happening in some theoretical Rock & Roll Heaven concert hall that still-alive contenders got a day pass to visit, I could totally see Jimi Hendrix standing up in the Green Room as the last chords of “Jack and Diane” in Division F finish up in the distance, slinging his guitar over his shoulder, and saying to no one in particular: “Ready to see some shit?” 1 seed “All Along The Watchtower” is coming off of a division-leading 7.91 average in the last round, and lines up against Radiohead’s 8 seed “Paranoid Android.” Radiohead is 1-0 and this is their last Round of 128 song.
Other stories: Jimi will start us at a 10, and then the Shins and U2 will collectively bring us down to a 2 in a battle of softer melodies between 4 seed “With or Without You” and 12 seed “New Slang.”
Green Day premiers in its first of three appearances with 2 seed hard-rocking “Longview,” but first it will have to get past Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band’s 7 seed classic “Night Moves,” the song that took the boys from local Michigan faves to the national stage. And last, the only song from the last 12 months still alive is Mumford & Sons Macbeth-inspired “Roll Away Your Stone” at an 11 seed. It faces off against Springsteen, who is coming off the biggest and most exciting upset in the tourney so far, and 3 seed “Thunder Road.”
Grooveshark link is here, except for Night Moves, and votes are due by Wednesday at 8 pm by commenting on this post or by e-mailing votes to LTDdotorg@gmail.com.

My Scores:
#1 All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) 10
#8 Paranoid Android (Radiohead) 4
I’m sure I’m in a small group here, but sometimes, guitar licks are so good and so evocative they make me shiver. While most think more of piano chords for that sort of thing, Jimi’s riffs here pulled it off for me. Absolute happy perfection.
#4 With Or Without You (U2) 9.7
#12 New Slang (The Shins) 7
I continue to be impressed by the Shins, but today just brought about a little nostalgic feeling for U2 back in the bygone days, when Bono cared more about music than other people or causes.
#3 Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) 7.7
#11 Roll Away Your Stone (Mumford and Sons) 7.1
I confess this was tough. Honestly, I don’t think I know what on earth Bruce is saying in Thunder Road (physically I mean). But its so emotionally draining as a song, that it manufactures a great response. I want to dock it, but I just can’t. Roll Away Your Stone, on the other hand, has terrific lyrics and I genuinely like it all – it just lacks Bruce’s ability to rip emotion from you against your will.
#2 Longview (Green Day) 3.5
#7 Night Moves (Bob Seger) 4.8
Green Day just peters out for me. Not much I can do. I like Seger, but Turn the Page will always be my opus of choice for him. Night Moves is nice, but lacks pop. I think both are in trouble in the next round.
All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix) 6.5
Paranoid Android (Radiohead) 5.5
With Or Without You (U2) 6.3
New Slang (The Shins) 6.8
Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen) 7
Roll Away Your Stone (Mumford and Sons) 7.3
Longview (Green Day) 6

In today’s version of context voting, I’m listening to match-ups in the PG county DMV, Beltsville, MD. This should be interesting.
All along the watchtower 7.8
Paranoid Android 1.5
Flat on your face, Radiohead. Seriously, I’m not wont for hammer voting…i just don’t like this song at all. May even actively dislike it. If you think that’s crazytalk…well, fine.
With or Without You 7
New Slang 6.7
U2 by a hair. Sometimes I wonder if we’d like New Slang as much if Natalie Portman weren’t so cool and pretty.
Thunder Road 10
Roll Away Your Stone 7.2
How it’s possible that anyone with a heart doesn’t back Springsteen is fucking baffling to me. I’ve genuinely enjoyed listening to Mumford & Sons do so well.
Longview 5.8
Night Moves 8.4
So there’s a fake ending, so what. “I used her, she used me, neither one cared”- and the rest of the song ain’t bad either.
all along the watchtower – 7
paranoid android – 8.5
with or without you – 9
new slang – 6
thunder road – 3
roll away your stone – 9
longview – 7
night moves – 4 (this was a 5 and then i saw there was still 1:30 left)
clear winners for me in all of today’s matchups. and some obligatory bruce-hating (allow me to baffle).
Uggghhhh I have a bad feeling that the boss is gonna be the new grateful dead.
