Music Tournament 256: Division J, Day 2

Good to be back in the driver’s seat again. Some good songs coming up next to finish up J. MarkB has been absent but will hopefully reemerge for the Jakob Dylan-Lady Gaga throw-down. Also, I personally feel JB got a low seed here…but we’ll see how it all fleshes out. Grooveshark link is here (except for Twist and Shout), votes are due by Wed at 9 pm. Yes, 9 pm. The morning routine doesn’t work any better than the evening, so we’re ditching that from here on out. Comment on the post or e-mail LTDdotorg@gmail.com. Last stands for The Buggles, The Wallflowers, Lady Gaga, and Jackson Browne. Good luck to all artists, and let’s keep doing the damn thing.

#2 America (Simon & Garfunkel) vs. #15 Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles)

#7 One Headlight (The Wallflowers) vs. #10 Bad Romance (Lady Gaga)

#3 Buddy Holly (Weezer) vs. #14 Running On Empty (Jackson Browne)

#6 Twist And Shout (Beatles) vs. #11 The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band)

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

  1. The Catholic says:

    America (Simon & Garfunkel) ~ 4
Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles) ~ 8
America? A 2 seed? How did that happen? That song is a total yawner, I had to pull myself out of a coma afterwards. From their tinkly organ to their Kenny G saxophone, its just not that great of a song. Video Killed the Radio Star, on the other hand, is solid.

One Headlight (The Wallflowers) ~ 7.5
Bad Romance (Lady Gaga) ~ 5

    Buddy Holly (Weezer) ~ 8
Running On Empty (Jackson Browne) ~ 7.5

Twist And Shout (Beatles) ~ 8.5
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band) ~ 8
Once again, diggin’ all the songs, except Bad Romance and America. Nothing too spectacular though…

  2. Adrock says:

    America (Simon & Garfunkel) ~ 8.8
Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles) ~ 5.3

I had a great and funny response to the Catholic’s comment, then I clicked on the Beatles link and lost it. The Beatles will therefore be docked because they are greedy and won’t let grooveshark have their songs.

One Headlight (The Wallflowers) ~ 6.8
Bad Romance (Lady Gaga) ~ 6.5

    Buddy Holly (Weezer) ~7.5
Running On Empty (Jackson Browne) ~ 5.8

Twist And Shout (Beatles) ~ 8
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band) ~ 7

Ok I didn’t really dock the Beatles. I am stunned by this though, as I love the Band. Was just feeling uptempo music today.

  3. adam says:

    Some odd tunes.

    #2 America (Simon & Garfunkel) 6
#15 Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles) 4
At least it’s a song about roadtrips

#7 One Headlight (The Wallflowers) 4
#10 Bad Romance (Lady Gaga) 2
I wonder what it’s like to be Bob Dylan’s son and then try to start a music career?

    #3 Buddy Holly (Weezer) 6
#14 Running On Empty (Jackson Browne) 5

#6 Twist And Shout (Beatles) 6
#11 The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band) 7.5

  4. sweetems says:

    America (Simon & Garfunkel) 8
Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles) 7

    One Headlight (The Wallflowers) 6
    Bad Romance (Lady Gaga) 6.1

    Buddy Holly (Weezer) 7.5
Running On Empty (Jackson Browne) 7.5

    Twist And Shout (Beatles) 8
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band) 6.5 [this usually wins for me but for some reason twist and shout got me tonight– think it’s lennon’s crackly voice over southern pride.]

  5. aiko says:

    #2 America (Simon & Garfunkel) 9
#15 Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles) 7.5
I was almost on the same page and the Catholic about America, and then it hits that line, “the moon rose over an open field…” and the whole thing just starts to ache… Yeah, this is a good song. It peters out unimpressively, so it’s not quite a 10.

#7 One Headlight (The Wallflowers) 6
#10 Bad Romance (Lady Gaga) 7.5

    #3 Buddy Holly (Weezer) 7.5
#14 Running On Empty (Jackson Browne) 4
Some nights this Weezer song would do better, some nights worse. Running on Empty is forgettable.

#6 Twist And Shout (Beatles) 7.5
#11 The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band) 7

  6. Mrs Wagners Pies says:

#2 America (Simon & Garfunkel) 9 vs. #15 Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles) 6

#3 Buddy Holly (Weezer) 8 vs. #14 Running On Empty (Jackson Browne) 8

#6 Twist And Shout (Beatles) 10 vs. #11 The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band) 7

  7. Marc says:

    America (Simon & Garfunkel) 8
Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles) 5

    One Headlight (The Wallflowers) 6
    Bad Romance (Lady Gaga) 6.5

    Buddy Holly (Weezer) 7.5
Running On Empty (Jackson Browne) 4.5

    Twist And Shout (Beatles) 8.5
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band) 7

  8. Janos says:

    America (Simon & Garfunkel) 8.9
Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles) 8.6
Video Killed The Radio Star won my first Napster era music tournament. And I needed that energy this morning more than I needed the pretty whimsy of S&G. But America’s just too good.

    One Headlight (The Wallflowers) 7.9
    Bad Romance (Lady Gaga) 6.5
I have always thought that One Headlight was some secret left-over from Bob Dylan and the Band Basement Tapes- the searing organ, the Robbie Roberstson style guitar, and the fact that this sounds nothing like the rest of the Wallflowers album, much to 14 year old Janos’s disappointment. I’ve lost interest in all but the chorus of Bad Romance.

    Buddy Holly (Weezer) 7.5
Running On Empty (Jackson Browne) 6.8

    Twist And Shout (Beatles) 9
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band) 8
I’m with Sweetems- this was an unexpected vote for Twist and Shout.

  9. Danno says:

    America (Simon & Garfunkel) ~ 8
Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles) ~ 7

One Headlight (The Wallflowers) ~ 6
Bad Romance (Lady Gaga) ~ 7

    Buddy Holly (Weezer) ~ 7
Running On Empty (Jackson Browne) ~ 4.5

Twist And Shout (Beatles) ~ 8
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band) ~ 4

  10. DrJ says:

    Buddy Holly (Weezer) 7
Running On Empty (Jackson Browne) 8

    Twist and Shout (Beatles) 8
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down ( The Band) 8.8

  11. Meghan says:

    America (Simon & Garfunkel) 5
Video Killed The Radio Star (The Buggles) 6

    One Headlight (The Wallflowers) 8
    Bad Romance (Lady Gaga) 7

    Buddy Holly (Weezer) 8
Running On Empty (Jackson Browne) 6

    Twist And Shout (Beatles) 8.5
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band) 6

  12. Jordan says:

    One Headlight [6]
    Bad Romance [5]

    Buddy Holly [8]
    Running on Empty [6]

    one headlight – 8.9
    bad romance – 4.5

    buddy holly – 7.5
    running on empty – 7

    twist & shout – 6.5
they night they drove old dixie down – 8.5

  14. guillermo olivos says:

America 9.6 (Saginaw, cigarettes, the always constant road)
Buggles 8.4 (“and then we meet in an abandoned studio.”)

    One Headlight 7 (losing steam)
Bad Romance 6 (losing more steam and her new song is terrible)

Buddy Holly 7 (Happy Days! But this doesn’t do it for me anymore)
Running On Empty 9.1 (damn I love this song)

    Twist and Shout 9.2
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down 6.5 (Here’s a clip of Joan Baez singing Dixie to the Muppets. God damn it, I hope puppet-driven productions are as cool today as they used to be. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RkDwKb9hcw )
