Music Tournament Round of 256: Division D, Day 1

Alright team, let’s get into this. Good to be back at the helm. As I mentioned in my results post, we will be pushing back the post times from night to morning for D, E, and F. The votes for D(1) will be due Wednesday morning the 16th at 9 AM. Grooveshark link is here, or e-mail votes to LTDdotorg@gmail.com.

Also, check it out: Steve Perry DID invent the fist pump.

#1 Don’t Stop Believing (Journey) vs. #16 Don’t Fear The Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult)

#8 Born To Run (Bruce Springsteen) vs. #9 Three Little Birds (Bob Marley & The Wailers)

#4 Hotel California (The Eagles) vs. #13 All Apologies (Nirvana)

#5 Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel) vs. #12 Rock ‘N Roll Radio (Ramones)

Surprisingly enough (well not surprising if you look at their names,) most of these bands are not facing elimination. The only one’s are the Don’t duo- whether it’s Journey or Blue Oyster Cult, either will be out of the tournament with a loss.

About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

It’s hard to imagine DSB dropping below an 8.5 in any situation, at least for me. Even more cowbell could not save the Cult- another good example of “good riff, but is that really the whole song?”

    Born To Run 10
    Three Little Birds 6

Well shit. I guess awesome rock songs about hope and love are taking it today- happy Valentine’s Day, Bruce. Also, like Grant was saying about Hey Ya, look up the lyrics to this one. “I’ll love you with all the madness in my soul.” That sounds good.

I like Three Little Birds, but in a juxtaposition like this, it just sounds like the lame song at a resort in Cozumel.

    Hotel California 6
    All Apologies 6.75

Nirvana is growing on me a bit. The Eagles are wearing on me a bit.

    Mrs. Robinson 7.5
    Rock & Roll Radio 7

Aw, Simon & Garfunkel are just so goddamn nice to listen to sometimes. Ramones sound good though.

Just what are streetlights people, and why do they lack emotion? Also, isn’t South Detroit: Canada? Deep thoughts, when you pause briefly from believing…
The most incredible karaoke song this side of Cameo’s Word Up easily defeats Don’t Fear the Reaper. Both have great instrumentals, but Steve Perry’s vocals are incredible, while Blue Oyster Cult almost makes you want to kill yourself with their velvety barbiturate monotones.

Born To Run (Bruce Springsteen) * 6
Three Little Birds (Bob Marley & The Wailers) * 10
Born to Run tried really hard to grab me with some sweet guitarwork, but the xylophone and saxophone dropped this from a 7 to a 6 pretty quickly. Bruce’s Elvis-lite vocals didn’t help much. Three Little Birds, on the other hand, is a song I wish I could listen to every morning. I was actually singing it to my wife just last night when she woke up from a nightmare. Just what the doctor ordered. Thanks Bob!

Hotel California (The Eagles) * 8
    All Apologies (Nirvana) * 8
Both fantastic songs. Can’t really choose right now.

    Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel) * 8.5
    Rock ‘N Roll Radio (Ramones) * 5
Mrs. Robinson is a really well put together song. It impressed me. Rock ‘N Roll Radio was NOT what I needed this morning. Sorry Joey.

I worry for DSB like I always worry for a top seed that doesn’t get seriously challenged in the early rounds of a tournament. It would get interesting for me if Born to Run advanced, not so much Three Little Birds.

#8 Born To Run (Bruce Springsteen) 9

Sorry, Janos, but as our good friend Kevin would say, DSB is total buttrock. Still a great song, but total buttrock. DFTR’s insane breakdown in the middle puts it over the top. And did you really only give DSB a 9???

#8 Born To Run (Bruce Springsteen) – 9.5 vs. #9 Three Little Birds (Bob Marley & The Wailers) – 8

#5 Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel) – 9.5 vs. #12 Rock ‘N Roll Radio (Ramones) – 7.5 (and it only gets this high bc of the subject)

Two boring stories about these songs: You really think that Don’t Stop Believing is a total power song, but I’ve used it as a halfway marker for half marathons and pumps you up way less than you’d expect. It’s a surprisingly slow tempo song. My story other story is that one time my friend Zan put $5 in an old jukebox and put on Don’t Fear the Reaper on repeat. First, you don’t really realize it how long it is. Second, you don’t really realize when one repetition ends and another beings. Third, that kind of shit doesn’t amuse the waitstaff.

Regardless, these are both great songs and this is a tough match up.

    Born to Run 5
    Three Little Birds 7

    Hotel California 7.5
    All Apologies 8
I am embarrassed by how much I like Hotel California. It imagine it’s how someone who worked hard to get rid of their accent must feel when they go home and it comes creeping back. I’ve been distancing myself from my hippie roots for years, and then this song comes one and makes me want to dance like it’s fucking Burning Man or something. Fortunately, All Apologies is a better song.

    don’t fear the reaper – 8

I know. This makes no sense. I fully acknowledge that DSB is the better song. Today, I have stopped believin – and the words just rang hollow. Now the reaper… he seems more important today.

    born to run – 4
    three little birds – 8

Another song that oddly sounded flat to me. Marley made me feel better. I shouldn’t make important decisions today.

    hotel california – 9
    all apologies – 8.5

Wow, damnation is high on my list today. Go figure.

    mrs robinson – 6.5
    rock n roll radio – 8.5

Another inexplicable happening. I’d say I’m just angry today, but I loved Hotel California. Hope Guillermo tracks consistency of each voter for songs that go deep – I’ve gotta look like a nutcase at this point.
