Music Tournament Round of 256: Division C, Day 1

I look at Division C and I think “Like a Rollin’ Stone” vs. Anybody’s Guess.  Should be interesting times. Listen at Grooveshark and vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com before 9pm on Sunday.

Out of today’s line-up, the New York Dolls,  MGMT, the Kingsmen and Sly and the Family Stone all face elimination.

#1 Like a Rollin’ Stone (Bob Dylan) vs. #16 Personality Crisis (New York Dolls)

#8 Everyday People (Sly and the Family Stone) vs. #9 Louie Louie (Kingsmen)

#4 Lookin’ Out My Back Door (CCR) vs. #13 Kids (MGMT)

#5 Blowin’ in the Wind (Bob Dylan) vs. #12 New Years Day (U2)

We’ll worry about Dylan v. Dylan if we get there.

I know I threw down a 10 last time for Dylan and I’ll do it again. This girl he wrote this about must’ve really pissed him off. Sheesh. ‘Common People’ by Pulp, I realize, is pretty much the same song, just more debonair.

Everyday People (Sly and the Family Stone) vs. Louie Louie (Kingsmen) = 4 to 8.5
Some hippy nonsense vs. a pre-punk stomper. No contest.

Lookin’ Out My Back Door (CCR) vs. Kids (MGMT) = 10 to 5
Eek, another 10 from the previous round. Sorry, I gotta do it again – song structure alone, this song is pretty much perfect. Great production, every instrument just sounds and feels right, it wraps up real quick, and who doesn’t feel good after hearing this tune?

Blowin’ in the Wind (Bob Dylan) vs. New Years Day (U2) = 8 to 5.5

As a function of (a) not having home internet, and (b) being a little transient these days (this life), everytime I manage to do music tournament in a completely random place I will let this board know. because you guys are the closest thing I have to friends. Kidding, sort of. These votes are coming in from Allentown, Pennsylvania on a Saturday afternoon. I don’t have a car, I just want to be back in Maryland/DC, and I literally feel like I’m trapped in an episode of The Office. Here we go:

    Personality Crisis 6.5
    Like A Rolling Stone 9.75

Holy shit, Like A Rolling Stone was exactly the theme song I needed for being stuck in a Ruby Tuesday’s in rural Pennsylvania- thanks for making this seem Romantically with a capital R ok, Bobby.

    Everyday People 6
    Louie Louie 6

I definitely have Everyday People on some mixes, but by 1:20 I was completely bored. Louie Louie didn’t do anything different for me.

    Kids 8.5
Looking Out My Back Door 6.5

Kids is surreal enough for how I feel right now. What the fuck is LOMBD about? nonsense.

    New Years Day 8
    Blowing In The Wind 6.5

stop whining (in an arnold accent)

It would be interesting to see where each of us is voting from. Having never been stuck in Rural Pennsylvania, I can’t fully relate… but being transient and productively unemployed can be one of the most fulfilling things a person can do. Bob sums it up poignantly, if a little on the harsh side.

    Personality Crisis 4.5

How the hell did Personality Crisis survive to this round? Oh well, it ain’t moving on. Sheer dominance.

    Everyday People 8
    Louie Louie 4

NO idea what was up… louie louie just sounded realllly old

    Lookin out my backdoor 7
    mgmt 6

    blowin in the wind 8.5
    new years day 7.5

Why you gotta hate on gypsies, Bob? She’s gone, let it go.
Personality Crisis has manageable rock instrumentals, but unremarkable lyrics or vocals.
    Everyday People 8.5
    Louie Louie 8.5
I’ll have to defer to the crowd on this one, love both songs and can’t choose. Everyday People is a clean, clear, beautiful soul song, they even toss in a “ScoobyDoobyDoo”. Some really impressive vocals and lyrics. Louie Louie brings me back to a time when I thought keggers and partying were the coolest thing in the world. I know better now, but does that help or hinder the Kingsmen? Bitter-sweet nostalgia points…

Lookin Out My Back Door 10
    Kids 7
Kids is a fantastically executed Eurotrash song, but I don’t do ecstasy or enjoy most techno so just being good at what they do doesn’t mean they can transcend the genre. Looking Out My Back Door just makes you wanna tap your feet and blow on a jug. In the best possible way. And given your psychedelic references in last round G-mo, I’m surprised you miss the obviously “altered” surreal dream-consciousness significance of CCR’s magnum opus.

    Blowin in the Wind 8
    New Years Day 7
New Years Day is awesome in many ways, but the synthy Linkin Park keyboard they insist on featuring in the opening holds the song back significantly. Bono’s emotional vocals rally to pull the song back from the abyss, but the Edge’s haunting backup vocals render the remains unsalvageable. Bob Dylan shines the way that one poet did at that coffee shop where you weren’t listening to the music as you waited in line and then realized ‘wow, thats some fine spoken word, my friend’. Not exactly a high energy song though, don’t see it lasting very far in the tourney…

#13 Kids (MGMT) 7 [think this earworm is better; not my fav mgmt]

#5 Blowin’ in the Wind (Bob Dylan) 9.7 [was not planning on this at all. I generally dislike this song but it just nailed me today- could be the rain.]
    #12 New Years Day (U2) 8

I could go the rest of my life without hearing Like a Rollin’ Stone again (and I dropped my score when it went over 5 minutes), whereas I will pretty much always want to jump up on a table and scream along with Personality Crisis. Let’s see Dylan have the effect on anybody.

#8 Everyday People (Sly and the Family Stone) 4
    #9 Louie Louie (Kingsmen) 6
I try not to let commercial associations color my view of a song, but I can’t help it with this one. Toyota pretty much ruined Everyday People and I never want to hear it again.

#4 Lookin’ Out My Back Door (CCR) 7

I’m visiting home for the weekend so I have special guest scores from my Dad.

    My scores:
#1 Like a Rollin’ Stone (Bob Dylan) 7
#16 Personality Crisis (New York Dolls) 3

#8 Everyday People (Sly and the Family Stone) 7
    #9 Louie Louie (Kingsmen) 8

#4 Lookin’ Out My Back Door (CCR) 7
    #13 Kids (MGMT) 6

#5 Blowin’ in the Wind (Bob Dylan) 8
    #12 New Years Day (U2) 9

My Dad’s scores, with comments that were aided by a few glasses of wine with dinner:

#1 Like a Rollin’ Stone (Bob Dylan) 7- His songs are great, but I don’t love his singing.
#16 Personality Crisis (New York Dolls) 4

#8 Everyday People (Sly and the Family Stone) 6 – good, but the same kind of thing as the Jackson 5. More of a manufactured sound.
#9 Louie Louie (Kingsmen) 7 – This is fun, simplistic, catchy but not detailed and no theme.

#4 Lookin’ Out My Back Door (CCR) 7.5
#13 Kids (MGMT) 5 -I’m already bored (at 30 seconds in)

#5 Blowin’ in the Wind (Bob Dylan) 8
This is classic Dylan. He’s actually trying to perform here.
    #12 New Years Day (U2) 8
