About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

    Sulk (Radiohead) 7

    Don’t Speak (No Doubt) 5
Your Cheating Heart (Hank Williams) 7

Ain’t No Sunshine (Bill Withers) 10. Sorry, I LOVE this song. LOVE. Love.
Paranoid Android (Radiohead) 8.5 And I like this one too. This match up kills me!

    Cherub Rock (Smashing Pumpkins) 6.5
    Daughter (Pearl Jam) 8

Sweet Thing (Van Morrison) 10. Love this one too. I’m so glad it is in the tournament.
With or Without You (U2) 6.5

Little Plastic Castles (Ani DiFranco) 7.5

I promise I won’t give out any more 10s for awhile. Today was just a big day for me.

  3. adam says:

Deceptacon (Le Tigre) vs. Sulk (Radiohead) = 8.5 to 6.5
Bummer, cause I think this is my favorite song off of The Bends, but when the first Le Tigre album dropped it was like no other.

Don’t Speak (No Doubt) vs. Your Cheating Heart (Hank Williams) = 4 to 7
I actually think No Doubt is alright, but never liked this song. There’s a few decent moments, but it always seemed so un-No Doubt-y

Ain’t No Sunshine (Bill Withers) vs. Paranoid Android (Radiohead) = 5.5 to 5
Definitely dig Bill Withers but this song always bummed me out – but I guess that’s the point. Great drums though.

Cherub Rock (Smashing Pumpkins) vs. Daughter (Pearl Jam) = 7 to 4.5
Cherub Rock is a killer way to start an album. Awesome guitar solo. Vs. was a great, great album but of all the tunes on it to be a single, I never understood why “Daughter” was chosen.

Sweet Thing (Van Morrison) vs. With or Without You (U2) = 6.5 to 8

Little Plastic Castles (Ani DiFranco) vs. Roll Away Your Stone (Mumford and Sons) = 8.5 to 3
I forgot about this Ani DiFranco song. Good stuff.

  4. Stephen says:

Deceptacon (Le Tigre) 4 – Fun song, but nothing special.
Sulk (Radiohead) 7 – Not one of Radiohead’s better songs. Still a good one.

    Don’t Speak (No Doubt) 9 – Great.
Your Cheating Heart (Hank Williams) 8 – One of the best country songs ever. Unfortunately that only warrants an 8/10…

Ain’t No Sunshine (Bill Withers) 6 – Good song, but nothing particularly noteworthy.
Paranoid Android (Radiohead) 10 – Genius.

Cherub Rock (Smashing Pumpkins) 10 – Great opener to one of the best rock records ever recorded.
Daughter (Pearl Jam) 8 – One of the few iconic 90’s songs.

Sweet Thing (Van Morrison) 4 – Great vocal performance is the only redeeming quality here.
    With or Without You (U2) 8 – A classic.

Little Plastic Castles (Ani DiFranco) 6
Roll Away Your Stone (Mumford and Sons) 5

  8. gmotellsthestory says:

    Deceptacon (Le Tigre) 7
    Sulk (Radiohead) 5

Never heard Le Tigre before, kinda got me going this AM.

    Don’t Speak (No Doubt) 5.5
Your Cheating Heart (Hank Williams) 8

    Hank!

Ain’t No Sunshine (Bill Withers) 6.5
    Paranoid Android (Radiohead) 6.5

    Eh.

    Cherub Rock (Smashing Pumpkins) 5
    Daughter (Pearl Jam) 5

    Eh^2

    Sweet Thing (Van Morrison) 10
With or Without You (U2) 6

and I will drive down your street in my chariot crying. this song will definitely be at my wedding. With or Without You is nice, but cliche, and i think Friends ruined it for me. Or Bono. Or both.

Little Plastic Castles (Ani DiFranco) 8.5
Roll Away Your Stone (Mumford & Sons) 8

Not my favorite Ani, and this Mumford song appealed to my alt-countryishness inclinations. But I dunno…it’s still so good- that DiFranco, oh my. Ani by a notch.

  9. Margot says:

    Deceptacon (Le Tigre) – 5
    Sulk (Radiohead) – 2

    Don’t Speak (No Doubt) – 4
Your Cheating Heart (Hank Williams) – 6

    Ain’t No Sunshine (Bill Withers) – 7
    Paranoid Android (Radiohead) – 3.5

Cherub Rock (Smashing Pumpkins) – 7
    Daughter (Pearl Jam) – 6

Sweet Thing (Van Morrison) – 9
    With or Without You (U2) – 7

Little Plastic Castles (Ani DiFranco) – 6
Roll Away Your Stone (Mumford and Sons) – 9

  10. Janos says:

    Deceptacon 6.5
    Sulk 7.5
Yorke’s vocal tour de force makes me wish Radiohead had made at least one more album in the standard rock vein.

    Don’t Speak 7
    Your Cheating Heart 6

    Ain’t No Sunshine 6
    Paranoid Android 9
Easily Radiohead’s best song, and one of the great epics of the 1990s. Easy call.

    Cherub Rock 9
    Daughter 6.5
I’m with Adam and Stephen- Cherub Rock is a flawless opening track that never fails to fire me up. All those angels with their wings glued on and such.

    Sweet Thing 7
    With or Without You 8

    Little Plastic Castles 8.5
    Roll Away Your Stone 6.5
Ani’s masterpiece blends folk and searing music like Bob Dylan’s Bringing it All Back home album.
“And they say goldfish have no memories. I guess their lives are much like mine…
and the little plastic castle is a surprise every time…”

  11. Nick says:

    Deceptacon (Le Tigre) 5
    Sulk (Radiohead) 4
Started out hating Deceptacon, grew on me a bit, then I said “see you later”. Sulk was actually worse though, too mopey.

    Don’t Speak (No Doubt) 7.5
Your Cheating Heart (Hank Williams) 5
Don’t Speak is a better song than I remember.

Ain’t No Sunshine (Bill Withers) 9.5
    Paranoid Android (Radiohead) 7
Doesn’t look like Bill Withers has the chops to take this one, but I’d listen to his song in more situations than I would Paranoid. Radiohead makes good music, but how often do I really want to listen to a song this melancholy and then aggressive and then subdued?

    Cherub Rock (Smashing Pumpkins) 4
    Daughter (Pearl Jam) 7
Still can’t stand Billy Corgin’s voice. Daughter is an odd song from an all male group, but oddly poignant as well.

    Sweet Thing (Van Morrison) 4.5
With or Without You (U2) 8
The sweetness of Bono’s voice is in stark contrast to Van Morrison’s garbled ramblings.
Both feature great instrumentals, but the vocal quality couldn’t be more disparate.

Little Plastic Castles (Ani DiFranco) 8
Roll Away Your Stone (Mumford and Sons) 8
Not too familiar with Ms. DiFranco, really like her style though. Definitely wasn’t expecting the ‘oompah’ horns… 🙂 Roll Away Your Stone was another pleasant surprise, great instrumentals, really nice vocals. I can’t choose!

  12. Carrie says:

    Deceptacon (Le Tigre): 2
    Sulk (Radiohead): 5

    Don’t Speak (No Doubt): 6
Your Cheating Heart (Hank Williams): 5

Ain’t No Sunshine (Bill Withers): 9
    Paranoid Android (Radiohead): 7

    Cherub Rock (Smashing Pumpkins): 5
    Daughter (Pearl Jam): 5

    Sweet Thing (Van Morrison): 7
With or Without You (U2): 6

Little Plastic Castles (Ani DiFranco): 8
Roll Away Your Stone (Mumford and Sons): 7

  13. natalie says:

i am late for an apartment viewing to get my votes in, but i felt strongly about a few of these.

    deceptacon -5
    sulk -7

    don’t speak – 6
    your cheating heart – 5

    ain’t no sunshine – 5
    paranoid android – 8.5

    cherub rock – 7
    daughter – 8

    sweet thing – 6
with or without you – 9.5

    little plastic castles – 6
roll away your stone – 9
ani surprised me, but not enough to overcome my bias toward banjos vs bias against most female vocalists (version of “roll away your stone” sounded weird though)
