About g-mo

The day I was born, Michael Jackson's Thriller album was at the top of the Billboard 200. I've been trying my best to live up to that expectation ever since.

Heroin (The Velvet Underground) 6.5 [Incredible album but again, wrong song. When do we get to the good stuff? There’s a reason this album was treated really poorly on its release (banned from lots of stations, etc., shitty reviews) because it’s really an album to be taken as a whole., and some of the tunes alone are distonal or droning (but again, not the Nico ones, mostly). Is Patty Smith’s Horses in this tournament? That song is a better version of what Lou is trying to accomplish here, of music and story intertwining and playing off each other experientially.]
Ruby Tuesday (The Rolling Stones) – 7. What the fuck is that flute doing? This is the Stone’s trying to do the Beatles instead of being the fucking goddamn fantastic stones. Keith plays like a monkey and he’s good at it.

The Good Life (Weezer) 8.5 – Does the album version say “Yea, Check me”? Anyone?
Good Vibrations (The Beach Boys) 8

More Than A Feeling (Boston) 7. Hell frat basements! How are you? [This “supergroup” is a composite of handpicked rockers who didn’t write their own music, but wtf–so were the supremes, right?)
You Can’t Hurry Love (The Supremes) 7.5 [jack white bassline? great tone.]

Hungry Like A Wolf (Duran Duran) 7.0 [wtf is that snyth doing? wolf sounds breakdown?]
    Longview (Green Day) 8.0

Jane Says (Jane’s Addiction) 8.5. WRONG VERSION ON GROOVESHARK.

Stranded in the Jungle (New York Dolls) 6.5

great call Grant, and apologies. The playlist now has the album version. I was spotchecking the set while wearing earbuds and on my computer at a show in maryland, thought it sounded a little off but figured I just hadn’t heard it in awhile.

Scores listed left to right Adam, Brian, Janos, Cristina
    Heroin 7.5 9 8 10
    Ruby Tuesday 7 8.5 7 7.5

    Good Life 7 7.5 7 –

    Heroin (The Velvet Underground) 8
Ruby Tuesday (The Rolling Stones) 6

These are both songs that tend to be hit or miss with me depending on my mood. In terms of VU, I agree with the earlier comment about tracks out of the context of a larger artistic work, and Heroin’s not the best standalone piece. Today, however, it was exactly what I needed. “Well, I guess, but I just don’t know.” Indeed.

    The Good Life (Weezer) 8.5
Good Vibrations (The Beach Boys) 6.5

I said the same thing when El Scorcho was in play and stand by it- Pinkerton is a solid, solid album, and anyone that thinks otherwise is misinformed. From Tired of Sex to Pink Triangle to Why Bother, tons of undiscovered gems. I’d call The Good Life my fave off the album. Did not disappoint tonight. Good Vibrations, I mean, it’s fun, but I can’t ever see this getting higher than a 7 from me anyday.

More Than A Feeling (Boston) 10
You Can’t Hurry Love (The Supremes) 7.5

MTAF was the first song I ever downloaded in my life, in 2000 on Napster. I am and always will be proud of this fact. This is my first 10- for all my life this song has never, ever disappointed me, from pre-adolescence to my current existence as a faltering late-twentysomething. Twelve-string guitars, solid solo, wonderful contrast between the verse picking and the simple yet so so good G C Em D chorus. It’s nothing complicated, but music doesn’t always need to be- this is universally accessible and tonight, was perfect. 10.

Hungry Like A Wolf (Duran Duran) 3
    Longview (Green Day) 7.5

I have always been supremely annoyed by HLAW. And goddamn was Dookie a good album. Anyone remember the schizophrenic drawings in the album liner for each song? I think for this one it was a creepy looking sketch of a dude in a Lazy Boy watching a television.

    Jane Says (Jane’s Addiction) 5
Stranded in the Jungle (New York Dolls) 6

No comment really, I liked the Dolls better.

Heroin– 6 love the velvet underground, but this is not my favorite, it’s a bit long and you kind of have to be in the mood to get into it. plus, the lyrics are a bit depressing, seriously. i’m still giving it a pretty good score though. i dig the gritty parts towards the end.
Tuesday– 6.5 i like the flute actually! but i agree with G, this sounds like the stones trying to be the beatles, and i’ve been sick of the beatles since high school.

The Good Life– 7.5 rocking weezer song, makes me dance 🙂
    Vibrations– 7 always a favorite

More than a feeling– 8.5 awesome
Can’t hurry love– 8.5 i’m really happy to see some diana ross in this tournament

    Hungry like a wolf– 7
    longview– 8

Jane says– 6, nice beat, but a little on the whinny side at times….
Stranded in the jungle– 7, i like the quirkiness of this song

Heroin (The Velvet Underground) 4.5 I was primed and ready to give this a higher score, but it just kept going… I would have been happier if someone had edited out some of the nonsense towards the end.
