Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 14 (Voter Appreciation Play-in Round)

Another day appreciatin’ ya’ll.  Some good tunes below.  Listen on Grooveshark, except Sweet Thing by Van Morrison.  He’s real finicky about copyright stuff, so listen to it on youtube here.

Thanks to Adam Small, Brian Orce, Astrid Spencer, Guillermo Olivos, Carrie Hughes, Colin Hunt and Russ Agdern for tonight’s match-ups.  The last one is for my boys and girls in Kittens Ablaze, taking on a band some feel I underrepresented in Pearl Jam.

My Hero (Foo Fighters) vs. Carolina Drama (Raconteurs)

Mixtape (Butch Walker) vs. Sweet Thing (Van Morrison)

Breakaway (Irma Thomas) vs. The Impression That I Get (Mighty Mighty Bosstones)

Voodoo Chile (Jimi Hendrix) vs. I Wanna Rock n Roll All Night (Kiss)

This Machine is Dying (Kittens Ablaze) vs. Daughter (Pearl Jam)

As always, vote by commenting below or emailing LTDdotorg@gmail.com.  Voting closes at 9pm Friday.

My Hero (Foo Fighters) vs. Carolina Drama (Raconteurs) = 6:10

Mixtape (Butch Walker) vs. Sweet Thing (Van Morrison) = 1:4

Breakaway (Irma Thomas) vs. The Impression That I Get (Mighty Mighty Bosstones) = 5:6

Voodoo Chile (Jimi Hendrix) vs. I Wanna Rock n Roll All Night (Kiss) = 9:10 (tough decision. both amazing and legendary in their own ways – but the lyrics/vocals in Hendrix don’t push me to a 10)

This Machine is Dying (Kittens Ablaze) vs. Daughter (Pearl Jam) = 9:8 (This isn’t just because they’re my friends. I can honestly say that I was more than half way through the song on random on my ipod before I recognized Tim’s voice and AFTER I decided I fucking loved the shit out of this song)

i’m afraid with the inlaws in town I’m going to miss this, so I’m going to bullet vote one for now:

Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) 9.5 vs I wanna and roll all night (6)

  11. Nick's avatar Nick says:

    My Hero [6.5]
    Carolina Drama [6.5]
Both good contemporary songs. Nothing fantastic.

    Mixtape [5]
    Sweet Thing [5]
Not feeling this one by Van. He’s one of those artists I think I really like, then I hear alot more of his stuff and just don’t dig it. Mixtape similarly mediocre.

    Breakaway [6]
The Impression That I Get [7.5]
Classy little tune in Breakaway, but Impression That I Get was pretty genre and era-defining. Still a bit weak on the refrain keeps it from an 8, but great horns and instrumentals in general.

    Voodoo Chile [8.5]
I Wanna Rock n Roll All Night [9]
Two all time greats that really epitomized their respective eras with kickass lyrics and rockin’ instrumentals that should definitely be in the 512. But somehow some obscure indie group matched up against Shakira will advance and one of these won’t.

This Machine Is Dying [6.5] –
    Daughter [8]
I could see how some people would like This Machine, its got alot going for it, didn’t work for me so much though. Daughter is just so damned catchy, its been a brainworm for me for years. Not the hugest Pearl Jam fan, and I still can’t figure out why people are calling him daughter, but maybe I need to relisten to it… Crap, now its stuck worse!!!

My Hero (Foo Fighters) 5.5 vs. Carolina Drama (Raconteurs) 8
Wasn’t feeling My Hero, though I dig the Foo Fighters generally. Looking forward to seeing Everlong soon. As for Carolina Drama, man that Jack White boy can play. This is like an epic Dylan classic with good bluesy vocals.

Mixtape (Butch Walker) 2 vs. Sweet Thing (Van Morrison) 7 I’m not sure how Sweet Thing won one of Guillermo’s tournament. It’s a pretty song, but Mixtape was pretty underwhelming comp.

Breakaway (Irma Thomas) 7.5 vs. The Impression That I Get (Mighty Mighty Bosstones) 8.5 Both punchy, energetic songs that make you excited for the weekend. Thanks to Carrie for introducing me to Breakaway, but it’s not gonna top the song that I used to play in the late 90s to get fired up for high school.

Voodoo Chile (Jimi Hendrix) 6.5 vs. I Wanna Rock n Roll All Night (Kiss) 7.5 Jimi’s guitar work is downright dangerous, but can I complain that the song doesn’t really go anywhere? And as for the most overplayed song in the history of classic rock radio…it’s still pretty catchy. I can see how this song would have blown peoples’ minds when it first came out.

This Machine Is Dying (Kittens Ablaze) 8.5 v. Daughter (Pearl Jam) 7.5 Anthemic chorus? Check. Great lyrics? Check. Singing drummer? Sortof- Tim has since moved to guitar. This is my favorite KA song, and to their credit, none of them voted on today’s match-up, with Tim even offering to withdraw the song out of respect to Daughter. Daughter, while a classy tune, surpasses Machine in quality, but not grit.

Voodoo Chile (Jimi Hendrix) 8.5 vs. I Wanna Rock n Roll All Night (Kiss) 7

This Machine is Dying (Kittens Ablaze) 7.5 vs. Daughter (Pearl Jam) 1
