Division D, Right Side

Hello friends and Happy Monday evening!  Welcome to Division D, Right Side.

I am joining you from Dallas tonight, home of the new NBA champions!  Although I am just passing through, I am seeing lots of people with that happy, tired look of people who gleefully celebrated all night long.

Greetings from Dallas!

Greetings from Dallas!

I briefly considered being a cornball and trying to make each of the matchup descriptions tonight NBA finals related, but with my tenuous grasp on basketball I think it will be better to just talk about the music.  I’d hate to go the way of any song that gets a 10 from both Guillermo and me, and be kicked off the People’s Choice Island.

While I didn’t nominate any of these songs, I have been looking forward to tonight’s choices.  I can really get behind a Division that features Fleetwood Mac and Cher, Zero 7, Natalie Cole and Rilo Kiley.

(15) Believe, Cher

(15) Believe, Cher

Here’s the Grooveshark link, and as always, vote by commenting below.  Votes are due by 8 pm EST on Wednesday, June 15th by 8 pm EST.

For our first matchup of the evening, we have a song about getting older pitted against the woman who, lovely as she is, never does:  (2) Landslide by Fleetwood Mac v. (15) Believe, by Cher.

Here, we have a track from a rock opera featuring a man who becomes a revolutionary and assassin of political leaders matched with Zero 7’s more soothing downtempo electronica:

(7) Operation: Mindcrime, Queensryche

(7) Operation: Mindcrime, Queensryche

(7) Operation: Mindcrime, Queensryche v. (10) Home, Zero 7.

The third pairing is a battle of classics:  (3) Natalie Cole with a cover of her father’s standard: Unforgettable against (14) Jumping Jack Flash, by the Rolling Stones.

(3) Unforgettable, Natalie Cole

(3) Unforgettable, Natalie Cole

And finally, we have (6) I Can Change, LCD Soundsystem v. (11) Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley.

Again, vote by commenting below.  Votes are due by 8 pm EST on Wednesday, June 15th by 8 pm EST.

landslide – 3- really not in the mood for this…and haven’t been since i played it a million times in highschool
    believe – 7.5 –

    operation – 3 –
home – 4 – this is the first zero 7 song i’ve heard since the Garden State soundtrack. it’s perfectly fine for background music but I expected more from them based on In the Waiting Line.

unforgettable – 8.5 – timeless and not so sappy that it sounds bad to a single person’s ears. 🙂
    jumpin jack – 6.5 –

    i can change – 3 – please change
    portions – 4 –

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac : 5
    Believe by Cher : 8
There’s something I love very much about Fleetwood Mac vs. Cher. But Cher crushes it. Just listen to her voice soar. Also it is Pride, like, next week, and I am stoked for the dancing in the streets.

Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche : 8.5
    Home by Zero 7 : 5.5
I was really feeling this Queensryche song. It’s not particularly innovative, but it pulls together all the elements of This Type of Metal perfectly. Also I am the advisor for Metal Club at my high school and happen to be wearing the shirt they just made reading, “With Metal, anything is possible” soooooo I kind of have to vote for it. I liked the lady’s voice in “Home,” but I do have to point out there are three songs in this tournament named “Home,” two of which are by bands with names that that contain the word “Zero.”

Unforgettable by Natalie Cole : 2
Jumping Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones : 8
As Jumping Jack Flash started, I just pictured a giant thumb slowly descending and crushing Natalie Cole like a bug.

I Can Change, LCD Soundsystem 8.5
Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley 9.5
Ooooh I nominated Portions for Foxes but this is a hard match up. I really enjoy LCD Soundsystem and this is the second best song on this album (after Dance Yourself Clean, RIP). It was really hard to pick a Rilo Kiley song to nominate, but I absolutely wanted to submit one. They have huge nostalgic value for me, probably more than any other band. However, they have a huge amount of amazing songs but it’s hard to pick one that stands out, exactly. This isn’t necessarily my favorite (Probably “Me/A Man/Then Jim” or “Gravity” would fit that bill), but it’s got more of a hook and really captures what’s excellent about them as a band, from Jenny Lewis’s voice and lyrics to Blake Sennet’s catchy, crisp guitar work. I love these guys a lot.

  4. G's avatar G says:

    Landslide by Fleetwood Mac 5
Believe by Cher 6.5 [I can’t believe that just happened. But it did. she get’s 3 points for being a pioneer and docked three points for that pioneering being autotune.]

    Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche 4.5
Home by Zero 7 4.7 [ Interesting, but didn’t like the second half.]

    Unforgettable by Natalie Cole 1.5
Jumping Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones 8

I Can Change, LCD Soundsystem 8
Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley 6.5 [The name of this song is a great lyric]

  5. Danno's avatar Danno says:

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac = 8
vs. Believe by Cher = 1
    Nope

Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche = 5.5
    vs. Home by Zero 7 = 2
Really wanted to boost the genre more for queensryche given the under-representation…but just wasn’t feeling this one. Sorry Adrock. However, Home briefly made me think of Angel (though I don’t have any idea why)…and we all know the effect that one had.

Unforgettable by Natalie Cole = 8
vs. Jumping Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones = 5
Love Unforgettable. Stones are kind of meh for me today.

    I Can Change, LCD Soundsystem = 4.5
vs. Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley = 8.5
Liking this LCD song a lot better than the last one…not quite growing on me yet though. Somehow discovered Rilo Kiley 5 years ago. Great album…great choice whoever submitted this one.

  6. Lindsay's avatar lindsay says:

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac = 8
vs. Believe by Cher = 6
I “believe” landslide has held up better, although I do like Cher too.

Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche = 5
    vs. Home by Zero 7 = 5.5
I am actually giving Queensryche a much higher score than I thought I might. Their genre isn’t my bag and normally I would skip a song like this after a few seconds. I’m glad I gave them a chance. This isn’t my favorite Zero 7.

Unforgettable by Natalie Cole = 7.5
vs. Jumping Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones = 8.5
Unforgettable is such a wonderful song. And the father-daughter theme makes my heart happy (Reminder: Father’s day is approaching!). But JUMPING JACK FLASH!! This tournament is hard sometimes.

    I Can Change, LCD Soundsystem = 7.75
vs. Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley = 8.25
I like this LCD Soundsystem song. It is chilling me way out, which is nice right after JJF got me all pumped up. But I really like Portions for Foxes. Thanks to the nominator — I had it on my list and swapped it for something else. I’m glad it still made it in!

  7. Stephen's avatar Stephen says:

Landslide – Just guitar and vocals, and nothing interesting happens. Stevie delivers a great vocal performance, and I’m sure the lyrics are touching, but that’s not enough to save this boring song. 4/10
Believe – This is a catchy pop song, and it is original in that it was the first song to popularize the use of excessively autotuned vocals. Unfortunately for Cher, I have to hold that against her, given the unholy mess of over-autotuned tripe known as popular music which she paved the way for. 1/10

Operation: Mindcrime – If you are going to play prog metal with crappy operatic vocals and cheesy overwrought concept-driven lyrics, you had better do it really well. Dream Theater does. Queensryche doesn’t. 4/10
Home – Zero 7 has a knack for creating soothing sonic textures. Nice vocals and interesting harmonic development too. 7/10

Unforgettable – I like Natalie Cole as a singer, but jazz ballads usually suck, and this is no exception. 3/10
Jumping Jack Flash – This is a classic for a reason. 8/10

I Can Change – Sweet synth sounds, cool beat, pleasing melody. But only two chords, highly repetitive, with little thematic development. 5/10
Portions For Foxes – Nothing new here, but nice vocals and good old American rock ‘n roll. 7/10

  8. dj roomba's avatar dj roomba says:

    Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) – 5
    vs. Believe (Cher) – 5
I’m feeling indifferent about these, so keeping it even stevens.

    Operation: Mindcrime (Queensryche) – 1.5
    vs. Home (Zero 7) – 1.5
    Meh to both.

    Unforgettable (Natalie Cole) – 6.5
vs. Jumping Jack Flash (Rolling Stones) – 6
    Unforgettable gets sentimental bonus points.

    I Can Change (LCD Soundsystem) – 7.5
vs. Portions for Foxes (Rilo Kiley) – 7.4
The line that gave I Can Change the win (by a hair) was “love is a murderer” – what does that say about me?

  9. IMA's avatar IMA says:

    Ian

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac = 8.5 (one of the greatest songs ever)
vs. Believe by Cher = 5 (a fine song as well)

Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche = 4 (bored)
    vs. Home by Zero 7 = 4.5

Unforgettable by Natalie Cole = 6
vs. Jumping Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones = 5.5 (love this band but not my favorite song by them)

    I Can Change, LCD Soundsystem = 6.5
vs. Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley = 6 (much closer than I thought it would be, but I love both songs)

  10. Daddy's avatar Daddy says:

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac = 5
vs. Believe by Cher = 1

Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche = 6 Yeah! Hair metal! About frickin’ time. I don’t know what operation: mindcrime is, but it sounds rad.
    vs. Home by Zero 7 = 5

Unforgettable by Natalie Cole = 5
vs. Jumping Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones = 6

    I Can Change, LCD Soundsystem = 7
vs. Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley = 7

  11. Landslide by Fleetwood Mac: 8.5
    Believe by Cher: 3.5

No chance Cher, but I am eagerly awaiting “Turn Back Time.”

    Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche: 6
    Home by Zero 7: 5.5

Songs called “Home” are undefeated so far. I think Zero 7’s got a decent shot to advance here and keep that trend alive- but honestly this is nothing special. And it has NOTHING on the Operation: Mindcrime Wiki entry: “In 1988, Queensrÿche released Operation: Mindcrime, a narrative concept album that proved a massive critical and commercial success. The album’s story revolved around a junkie who is brainwashed into performing assassinations for an underground movement; the junkie (“Nikki”) is torn over his misplaced loyalty to the cause and his love of a reformed hooker-turned-nun (“Mary,” vocals by Pamela Moore) who gets in the way.” So it’s like Les Mis meets A Clockwork Orange? With guitars? I am learning so very much.

    Unforgettable by Natalie Cole: 7.5
Jumping Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones: 6.5

Is Unforgettable supposed to be a happy song? I always think about walking alone in a city when I hear this song…I mean I like it, but there’s that. Dig. As for JJF, all of my favorite Stones songs were in the last tournament. Except for Heart of Stone.

I Can Change, LCD Soundsystem: 6
Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley: 8.6

I’m so happy someone finally nominated a Rilo Kiley song so I can include this clip. What up Jenny Lewis!

    • Adrock's avatar Adrock says:

Whatever you do, do not read an entry about Operation Mindcrime 2, the 20 year delayed sequel… even I hate its guts. Metal Opera’s are a bizarre subgenre… this really is the origin (and I know Tommy is really really the origin.. but stick with me), and it has spawned entire bands to exist (the supergroup Avantasia being the best and most successful), so I’m happy to throw it on here. And if nothing else, the live show, where they interspersed film clips of the narrative, was an incredible happening, and one I am proud to own (Operation: Livecrime – – catchy, no?)

Listening to Queensryche made me wish that I had a studded leather jacket with an iron-on Queesnryche patch.
Not my favorite Zero 7 song, at all. No way I thought they were going to lose.

    Unforgettable (Natalie Cole) – 7.5
Jumping Jack Flash (Rolling Stones) – 8

I always have dug the father-daughter duet, even if it seemed like Natalie Cole was exhuming the memory of her dad solely for commercial gain.

    I Can Change (LCD Soundsystem) – 4
Portions for Foxes (Rilo Kiley) – 8

Never sure I understood the appeal of LCD Soundsystem. Still don’t.
    Big Rilo Kiley fan.

landslide – 6 (fleetwood mac still irks me, but this is a pretty great song… i prefer billy corgan’s rendition)
believe – 1 (she used autotune before it was cool!! i find this song to be nothing but annoying.)

operation: mindcrime – 3 (hair metal… it exudes a degree of awesomeness, but i struggle to rate it highly musically)
home – 8.5 (this is much more my cup of tea)

unforgettable – 3.5 (it may be a classic, but it just doesn’t do anything for me, sorry)
    jumping jack flash – 8

    i can change – 8 (i enjoyed this)
    portions for foxes – 4.5

  16. Adrock's avatar Adrock says:

    (2) Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) 5.5
    (15) Believe (Cher) 1

I apologize at the outset. I’m a big fan of Fleetwood and Landslide – but I needed more today. Soft and slightly sad just isn’t cutting it no matter how great the song. I cannot emphasize how much I hate the synthesized vocal line that pops up in a couple spots here. It makes me beyond irrationally angry. I don’t even know why anymore. I’m also convinced she originated it in this song – that makes me doubly angry. I’d give it a zero, but I don’t think it’s allowed (even if Guillermo did it). And honestly, i was digging the song otherwise.

    (7) Operation: Mindcrime (Queensryche) 10
    (10) Home (Zero 7) 6.3

Mindcrime might be my favorite album of all time, and this is one of my two favorite songs. Admittedly, it fits even better in context with the rest of the album, but terrific range from Geoff Tate, cool lyrics, and this great video from the live concert., with a badass leather jacket and a creepy looking Dr. X in the embedded videos. Man I love metal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvMdNJ_dTGQ
Home is a really cool song – never heard of Zero 7, but definitely checking them out later. What was up with the buzzed fade out? That was weird and knocked a little off for me. Thanks to whoever nominated it though!

    (3) Unforgettable (Natalie Cole) 9.5
    (14) Jumping Jack Flash (Rolling Stones)

Unforgettable is virtually perfect. Plus, it brings up great memories of bizarre drunken duets on the old karaoke revolution games on New Years. Only knock is that her father’s version is even better.

    (6) I Can Change (LCD Soundsystem) 3
    (11) Portions for Foxes (Rilo Kiley) 5.3

I Can Change started kind cool… then repeated…and repeated. There’s gotta be an LCD song out there that’s going to catch me right and get a 10 and lots of airplay – but this wasn’t it. Rilo is an odd mix of fun and whiny sounding, but it ends up on the good side of my ledger.

  17. Mark B's avatar Mark B says:

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac : 10
    Believe by Cher : 5
If Cher wins this, I am officially withdrawing all further contributions and will angrily boycott the PCT. Landslide is, quite simply, brilliant. Not that I’m a Cher hater (and this is good disco), just that…well……..I mean, come ON. My first 10 of the tournament…BOOM.

Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche : 4
    Home by Zero 7 : 6.5
Mindcrime does make want to jump around the room doing absurd dancemoves and making ridiculous metal faces, so points for that. Zero7 really should be better-known. I think they’re wonderful, though this is definitely not their best…sounds a little too Morcheeba-y.

Unforgettable by Natalie Cole : 3
Jumping Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones : 7
    No comparison here for me.

    I Can Change, LCD Soundsystem : 4
Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley : 7
I don’t fall into the ‘everything LCDS does is completely awesome’ camp. I don’t think this is anything special. Aaaah, Jenny Lewis………you are the best…please keep talking.

    Landslide:9
    Believe: 3

Home: 5 (didn’t like it that much but compared to Operation:Mindcrime, I’d have voted for this one if it were nails on a chalkboard).

    Unforgettable: 4
Jumpin Jack: 5 (great band but not my favorite song choice)

    Change: 2
    Portion: 4

  19. asf's avatar asf says:

Landslide – 4.5 – Southpark has forever ruined Stevie Nicks for me.

Believe – 2.5 – Could have gotten a 4, but knocked down for the early adoption of auto-tune.

    Operation: Mindcrime – 5

When It Falls – 7.5 – I think this is supposed to be cheesy now, but I still like it.

    Unforgettable – 5 – Good song, I don’t like this version.

Jumpin Jack Flash – 8.5 – One of my favorite Stones songs.

I Can Change – 5 – Not my favorite LCD song

Home was sleepy but I still kinda liked it.

    Unforgettable by Natalie Cole 10
Jumping Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones 4

I’m joining the growing group of people that give 10s to their own songs. I’m really surprised with all the low scores for Unforgettable here.

I Can Change, LCD Soundsystem 6
Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley 3

  21. The Progenitor's avatar The Progenitor says:

Landslide – 8.5 vs Believe – 6.0 – Landslide is a classic. Generally like Silver Spring better but this is a close second. Cher doesn’t need the electronic crap; voice is too good.
Mindcrime – 4.5 vs Home – 5.0 – Sorry, child! Not one of your better tracks to my ear. Home was pleasant but that’s as far as it goes. Much rather stay in the other Home.
Unforgettable -7.5 vs Jack Flash – 6.5 – Wrong Cole. Gets a 9.0 without Natalie. Like some Stones but this is merely good. Not great.
I Can Change – 4.0 vs Portions for Foxes – 6.0 More mediocrity. Change – what do these guys do for fun during a power outage? Electronics merely covering a multitude of sins. Portions was OK but won’t standup to repeat listens. Nothing to grab you.

  22. Eileen's avatar Eileen says:

    Landslide – 8.0 vs Believe – 6.0
    Mindcrime – 4.0 vs Home – 6.5

Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche 7 3.5
    Home by Zero 5 5
This song took me back to freshman year, when Adrock played shit like this all night. It did not take Cristina back to any time or place.

Unforgettable by Natalie Cole 7 6.5
Jumping Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones 8 7.8

    I Can Change, LCD Soundsystem 9.5 10
Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley 3.5 6
I deducted an additional half point for its association with Grey’s Anatomy.

Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) v. Believe (Cher) = 7 to 1
Two nights in a row, I’ll admit I like the alternative 9ts rock cover version better. Just being honest.

    Operation: Mindcrime (Queensryche) v. Home (Zero 7) = 8.5 to 6.5
WHO. NOMINATED. THIS? My sister’s boyfriend when I was growing up, strangely enough, was an INSANELY HUGE Queensryche fan. Of all the bands. He was also, paradoxically, a legitimate late 80’s skater. Don’t knwo how he reconciled all that but it worked. I remember we were in a mall in Ann Arbor and finally found the self titled EP with “Queen of the Ryche” on it – a very different record than their later stuff obviously. Empire still has some great songs that have aged surprising well (namely, Jet City Woman). My score my drop on this song later in the tourney, but excited enough to see it now so it’s getting a good score. There was really no one else like them, for better or worse.
I actually like me some Zero 7 tunes. I wasn’t liking this one at first, but this is a lesson to keep listening to songs in the tourney….I’m feeling the discordant brass crescendo.

Unforgettable (Natalie Cole) v. Jumping Jack Flash (Rolling Stones) = 4 to 7

I Can Change (LCD Soundsystem) v. Portions for Foxes (Rilo Kiley) = 3 to 8
Ouch. A lot of loaded memories attached to this Rilo Kiley tunes. I feel like a County Judge who needs to recuse himself from the case for conflict of interest.

  25. Maureen's avatar Maureen says:

    Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) – 8
    Believe (Cher) – 4
I have a lot of love for Stevie Nicks – and I really love this song. I don’t hate Cher, but Believe is far from her best work.

    Operation: Mindcrime (Queensryche) – 4
    Home (Zero 7) – 4.5
This match up surprised me. I am not a big metal fan, so I was surprised that I didn’t hate the Queensryche song. And I was totally expecting to really enjoy some Zero 7 this morning, and it didn’t really happen. Extra .5 for Home because that’s the one I would rather listen to again.

    Unforgettable (Natalie Cole) – 8
Jumping Jack Flash (Rolling Stones) – 7
Both of these are such great songs – this was a tough one for me. But based on my mood this morning – and that it is a gray morning in Chicago today, Unforgettable gets the lead. Perhaps on a sunny Friday afternoon the Rolling Stones could have taken it….

    I Can Change (LCD Soundsystem) – 7
Portions for Foxes (Rilo Kiley) – 8.5
Another surprise for me this morning – I am loving this! LCD Soundsystem is fantastic – and seeing them play live at Pitchfork last summer totally cemented them on the level of awesome for me. But I Can Change, while totally fun, couldn’t compete with Portions for Foxes this morning. Rilo Kiley owned this one – and I have already listened to this song two more times. I am hoping this round will be won by the red-headed women with powerful voices (and Cher’s wig doesn’t count).

  26. Sam's avatar Sam says:

landslide – 7.2- To think that Glee sold me on how good this group is and how important they are to music today. I really dig the acoustic guitar, especially in the instrumental sections between verses. I go back and forth on Stevie Nix’s voice though….guess I have to be in the right mood. Today I was in a pretty sentimental mood so I think it scored a little high.
believe – 6.3- It’s a pretty good pop song. I once covered this with a buddy for a show though and we turned it into an upbeat reggae track and it may be one of the stranger things I’ve ever done.

operation – 4 –Not a big fan of Prog Rock. I bet the only place this band can play any more is Scandanavia. The bass has some ill fills though.
home – 4.5 – Someone mentioned this earlier but their song on the Garden State soundtrack was awesome. And this one remind’s me of the poor man’s version of that.

unforgettable – 8 – I’m so adamant against being nostalgic when voting (despite feeling sentimental), but this song is just so sweet.
jumpin jack – 6.5 – Not a Stone fan, but this song rocks. Keith Richards is all over it and Mick’s eccentricities show some restraint.

i can change – 4– I keep wanting to give LCD a chance. But they just aren’t my thing. Although this song is more tolerable then the other one because it’s shorter, but not my much.
portions – 8.8 – I had actually never heard this song not acapella (group at college did it every stupid show) so I was ready not to like it. False. It’s awesome and now I have a serious musical crush on Jenny Lewis.

  27. Landslide-9
Believe-6 As far as I’m concerned Fleetwood Mac beats Cher every time, hands down…

    Operation-5
    Home-3

    Unforgettable-2
    Jumpin’ Jack-7

    I Can Change-3
Portions for Foxes-8 I like this one, catchy and I also gave it an extra point for it’s association with Grey’s Anatomy.

  28. Cait's avatar Cait says:

First time voting on my own and very excited! Big thank you to Meghan for all the information regarding this site and tournament : )

    Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) – 5.9
    Believe (Cher) – 2.0
I enjoy Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks in general. Landslide is a genuinely lovely song although some days I’m more up for listening to it than others. Today I wasn’t feeling it as much, but certainly more than Cher. The only thing I can think of when I listen to Believe is that at some point it must have been featured in an SNL parody or something of the sort and I just can’t take it seriously enough to give it a higher score here.

    Operation: Mindcrime (Queensryche) – 2.0
    Home (Zero 7) – 4.0
This match up underwhelmed me. Ugh. Not a fan of Operation: Mindcrime. It may just be a genre thing for me since most metal is just not my style, but I had no desire to listen to this song as soon as it started. Zero 7 is definitely more my style, but this song hit a dull note for me today.

    Unforgettable (Natalie Cole) – 8.5
Jumping Jack Flash (Rolling Stones) – 6.5
Love, love, love Unforgettable and was excited to see it in the match up! Timeless, classic and brings a smile to my face each time I hear it. haha Much to the dismay of those around me I also feel the need to sing along every time I hear it. Jumping Jack Flash is classic Rolling Stones, but not my all time favorite or anything. Solid song though and a formidable opponent!

    I Can Change (LCD Soundsytem) – 9.0
Portions For Foxes (Rilo Kiley) – 8.7
Both I Can Change and Portions For Foxes are pretty darn close to the type of songs I was hoping to hear this afternoon. This match up is my favorite of the round! That said, I like these songs a lot and can’t say anything negative about either. It’s sad one of them will be left behind. I do give the edge to I Can Change because it’s the first song I’m going to play again once I submit this.

Nice Power Glove video. The Wizard is available on netflix for all those interested in watching a 90 minute Nintendo commercial with Beau Bridges and Christian Slater. It’s worth it.
