Was out late at a work function. Grooveshark is now up. Let’s close out Division M with a bang! Take us away, Sir Charles!

Neither really hit for me.
Heart Shaped Box (Nirvana) 6
Rock ‘n Roll N***a (Patti Smith) 5
Once again, wow.
Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones) 7
Peaches (POTUS) 8
Now we’re talking. Dig the energy on both of these songs.
Rapper’s Delight (Sugarhill Gang) 9
Material Girl (Madonna) 4
Now THATS what I needed this morning. The origins of Hip Hop always do it for me. Madonna, not so much.
California Stars (Wilco) 4
The Impression That I Get (Mighty Mighty Bosstones) 7.5
California Stars kinda brought me down. Really low energy song, thank God for MMB afterwards. Now I’m awake.
I Can Hear Music (Beach Boys) 5
The Harder They Come (Jimmy Cliff) 6.5
Jimmy Cliff sounds pretty dated, but I like his little ditty. Not sure why this of all the Beach Boys catalog is in the tournament…
I like the “morning” play by play commentary, but it is almost noon, even LA time, right? At least, it posted at 3pm EST…
Thats because you had to approve it.
Jeremy (Pearl Jam) 7
Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bob Dylan) 6
Some days, Dylan’s voice works, and he’s unstoppable… other days… great lyrics only get you a 6 because you hurt my ears when you talk
Heart Shaped Box (Nirvana) 5
Rock ‘n Roll N***a (Patti Smith) 7.5
Loving Patti’s energy… better than a caffeine kick
Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones) 8
Peaches (POTUS) 6
I don’t know what to do with it… the music is so fun.. and the lyrics are so blah… very confusing song for me
Rapper’s Delight (Sugarhill Gang) 7.5
Material Girl (Madonna) 5
Hadn’t heard Sugarhill in ages. Pure classic. Definitely loses at least a full point for being too damn long though… at 6 minutes of length, its a 9… 14 is just excessive.
California Stars (Wilco) 4
The Impression That I Get (Mighty Mighty Bosstones) 5.5
I Can Hear Music (Beach Boys) 3
The Harder They Come (Jimmy Cliff) 6
Gotta back El Rey’s call – how did this Beach Boys song wind up in here?
I could have gone with something like “Fun, Fun, Fun” or “I Get Around”, but thought this lesser known song, which I’ve always thought was tops, might be interesting to throw in the mix. The Beach Boys have 4 songs advancing as it is, so no regrets.
Heart Shaped Box 3 [over the grunge]
Rock n Roll N***a 6.5
Peaches 4.5
Brown Sugar 5
Rapper’s Delight 4 [so long]
Material Girl 7
California Stars 8.5
Impression That I Get 5
The Harder They Come 4
I Can Hear Music 2.5
Jeremy (Pearl Jam) 6.0
Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bob Dylan) 6.5 [“the pumps don’t work because the vandals took the handles…”]
Heart Shaped Box (Nirvana) 8.5 [a fav. electric Nirvana]
Rock ‘n Roll N***a (Patti Smith) 6.5 [was all over this until the famous people rundown and outro]
Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones) 6.0
Peaches (POTUS) 6.0 [guilty pleasure]
Rapper’s Delight (Sugarhill Gang) 7
Material Girl (Madonna) 5.5
California Stars (Wilco) 7 [what I needed]
The Impression That I Get (Mighty Mighty Bosstones) 8.5 [was NOT expecting this score.]
I Can Hear Music (Beach Boys) 6 (Nos– nice underrated selection.)
The Harder They Come (Jimmy Cliff) 5
Jeremy (Pearl Jam) vs. Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bob Dylan) = 5 to 5.5
Only in the 90s could have this been subject matter for a #1 hit.
Heart Shaped Box (Nirvana) vs. Rock ‘n Roll N***a (Patti Smith) = 4 to 4.5
In Utero is great, and this sounded pretty wild when it came out, but really, not a good song.
Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones) vs. Peaches (PUSA) = 8 to 7.5
Bummer, this was a great PUSA song. Does anyone remember that the bassist played with only 2 strings and the guitar player with only the lower 4? That was always strange to me. It would drive me crazy. But you know, I think Keith Richards always played without his low E string. Very odd combination between these two bands in that sense, eh?
….”and dreamed about you wommmaaNNnnNNnn”
Rapper’s Delight (Sugarhill Gang) vs. Material Girl (Madonna) = 6 to 1
I remember hating the lyrical content to Material Girl when I was a little kid and I hate it now. Maybe there’s supposed to be some deeper meaning, but I could care less.
California Stars (Wilco) vs. The Impression That I Get (Mighty Mighty Bosstones) = 8.5 to 1.5
A number of the songs on Mermaid Avenue still tear me up to this day.
The Bosstones were a great band at one point but this song, and most of what came after it, was essentially unlistenable. Their cover of Sweet Emotion was always good. How can you go from that to this?
I Can Hear Music (Beach Boys) vs. The Harder They Come (Jimmy Cliff) = 2 to 7.5
The first date I ever had in NYC was with a girl I met at the Two Boots video rental place just north of Houston when I was in there renting The Harder they Come. It was a video, not a DVD. I left it out on the table at my apartment, and my new-ish roommate at the time thought it was a porno.
Btw, great Charles Barkley/ Nirvana pic. wow.
Jeremy (Pearl Jam) 6
Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bob Dylan) 7
It’s the battle of voices I can’t stand. But this is the only PJ song I really like, and this Dylan song surprised me. (Actually I don’t mind Dylan’s voice, I just hate how he sings, and he sings ok in this one).
Heart Shaped Box (Nirvana) 8.5
Rock ‘n Roll N***a (Patti Smith) 4.5
Possibly my favorite Nirvana song… possibly.
Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones) 4.5
Peaches (POTUS) 7.5
Rapper’s Delight (Sugarhill Gang) 9 [How many songs are you not only not sick of after 14 minutes, but you’re still actively enjoying?]
Material Girl (Madonna) 6 [Cultural touchstone? Yes. Great song? Not as much]
California Stars (Wilco) 8
The Impression That I Get (Mighty Mighty Bosstones) 6
Wilco can be real hit or miss… this was a hit.
I Can Hear Music (Beach Boys) 6
The Harder They Come (Jimmy Cliff) 7
I used up all my attention span on the Sugar Hill Gang and wasn’t really paying attention to this match-up… I liked the Beach Boys song I think but what a crappy ending. That lost it a point.
I forgot a vote:
1) Jeremy 7, Dylan 3. Pj came surprisingly swinging. SHB, I’m surprised by the comments, I wasn’t into this at all- the whole time I wanted it to be something from Blonde on Blonde.
Jeremy (Pearl Jam) 8
Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bob Dylan) 7
I’m not a huge PJ fan, but this really hit the spot today.
Heart Shaped Box (Nirvana) 7
Rock ‘n Roll N***a (Patti Smith) 8
Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones) 7
Peaches (POTUS) 6
Rapper’s Delight (Sugarhill Gang) 8
Material Girl (Madonna) 8
Rapper’s Delight was a 9 until that verse about dinner gone awry. That was weak. Then it was an 8.5 until the last 90 seconds. At that point it had to end.
Did you guys catch the verse from minute 6-7 where he calls out Superman?
“i said by the way baby what’s your name
said i go by the name of lois lane
and you could be my boyfiend you surely can
just let me quit my boyfriend called superman
i said he’s a fairy i do suppose
flyin through the air in pantyhose”
