Division C gets off to a strong start today, with Sympathy for the Devil and Like a Rollin’ Stone making their first appearances. ‘Rollin Stone was named the #1 song of all-time by Rolling Stone Magazine, which partly inspired this tournament.

Like a Rollin’ Stone (Bob Dylan) vs. Crossroads (Cream)
Sunday Bloody Sunday (U2) vs. White Wedding (Billy Idol)
Louie Louie (Kingsmen) vs. Rave On (Buddy Holly). Old school battle.
Personality Crisis (New York Dolls) vs. Live and Let Die (Paul McCartney). Paul (solo) has two songs in the tournament, as do the Dolls.
Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard (Paul Simon) vs. Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones). Somebody had to go against Sympathy- why not a joyous tune that whistles its bridge.
Like a Rollin’ Stone (Bob Dylan) vs. Crossroads (Cream) 6 – 7
Sunday Bloody Sunday (U2) vs. White Wedding (Billy Idol) 8 – 7.5 – I wish we could go with the Under a Blood Red Sky Live Version of Sunday – the extra energy would do this one well i think.
Louie Louie (Kingsmen) vs. Rave On (Buddy Holly). 6 – 7
Personality Crisis (New York Dolls) vs. Live and Let Die (Paul McCartney). 3.5 – 6 Would the Movie theme song version (little more aggressive, little less on the early strings) help live and let die? It couldn’t hurt…
Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard (Paul Simon) vs. Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones). 6.5 – 8
You can request different versions, though live versions are a slippery slope. I guess if it’s been released as an important album, like Nirvana Unplugged, The Last Waltz or Under a Blood Red Sky, that works. I didn’t realize the movie version was better- I’ll check it out.
Growing up in the East Village of New York City, the New York Dolls were local heroes. While by this time they had broken up and lead singer David Johansen was all over MTV with his video “Hot, Hot, Hot” and performing under his pseudo-personality, Buster Poindexter, the New York Dolls influence still hung in the air. Johnny Thunders, the guitar player who would ultimately succumb to a decades-long addiction in a New Orleans hotel in 1991, could still be seen walking up and down St. Marks Place on most days and there were always people stopping, praising and sometimes following him down the street.
They were part of the New York magic in the same way that people here now feel about the Ramones or Blondie, both also featured in this tournament and both of which claim the New York Dolls as a major and vital influence. The New York Dolls did makeup before KISS and punk before the Sex Pistols. KISS has stated that the NY Dolls gave them the idea to wear makeup. The Sex Pistols’ guitar player said that every movement he made was copied directly from Johnny Thunders.

– Crossroads v. Like a Rolling Stone = 9 to 10
Two of the best songs available on classic rock radio.
– Sunday Bloody Sunday (U2) vs. White Wedding (Billy Idol) = 8 to 1
“Dancing with Myself” was a Generation X song, not Billy Idol, right? ‘Eyes Without a Face’ is a good song too, but other than that, blah. Remember “Cyperpunk” and “Shock to the System?” eesh. The part where Bono shouts “Alright!,” is awesome.
– Louie Louie (Kingsmen) vs. Rave On (Buddy Holly) = 9 to 4
I like Buddy Holly a lot, but not this song.
– Personality Crisis (New York Dolls) vs. Live and Let Die (Paul McCartney) = 2 to 6.5
Sorry, just never dug the New York Dolls.
