Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 19 (Round of 512)

We move on to a new division tonight, possibly the most competitive group in the entire tournament.  You may not see it in this week’s match-ups, as I view the group as top-heavy.  But within Division B, I see Time (Pink Floyd), LA Woman and Superstition all as championship contenders.   Here’s tonight’s lineup, available on Grooveshark, except Hey Jude.

My Name is Jonas (Weezer) vs. When I Come Around (Green Day).  Good evening, 1994.

When the Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) v. Devil Went Down to Georgia (Charlie Daniels Band)

Man on the Moon (REM) vs. Hand in Glove (Smiths)

Hey Jude (Beatles) vs. End of the Road (Boyz II Men).  Yeah, I went there.

Walk Like An Egyptian (Bangles) vs. Boys of Summer (Don Henley)

When the Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) v. Devil Went Down to Georgia (Charlie Daniels Band) Amazing songs tonight…When the levee breaks drum track was recorded in a big hallway. 9:9

Man on the Moon (REM) vs. Hand in Glove (Smiths) 6:5

Hey Jude (Beatles) vs. End of the Road (Boyz II Men). 10:9

When the Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) v. Devil Went Down to Georgia (Charlie Daniels Band) . 8.5: 7.5. The Band of Demons are awesome, and should have won the fiddle-off.

Man on the Moon (REM) vs. Hand in Glove (Smiths) : 9 : 7. If you haven’t seen the movie, Man on the Moon, you’re missin’ out.

Hey Jude (Beatles) vs. End of the Road (Boyz II Men): 8.5-8. My feelings on the four minute coda fluctuate with my mood.

Walk Like An Egyptian (Bangles) vs. Boys of Summer (Don Henley) 7.5 : 7

My Name is Jonas (Weezer) 8.5 vs. When I Come Around (Green Day) 7.5. Two great 90s rock songs. I really enjoy Weezer’s Blue Album to this day. Surf Wax America would get a 9.5 from me. Green Day is solid, but sounds a bit simplistic against the virtuosity of Rivers Cuomo and co.

When the Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) 9.5 v. Devil Went Down to Georgia (Charlie Daniels Band) 8. Two more greats! Definitely got the nostalgia factor in full force with Led Zeppelin on this one.

Man on the Moon (REM) 8 vs. Hand in Glove (Smiths) 4
Wow. I really don’t like Morrissey. Haunting isn’t a sound that appeals much to me…

Hey Jude (Beatles) 8.5 vs. End of the Road (Boyz II Men) 3 Real mellow melody by the Beatles. Their na na nas blow away the Boyz.

Walk Like An Egyptian (Bangles) 6 vs. Boys of Summer (Don Henley) 7.5 Liked ol’ Don more on this listen than I was expecting to. The Bangles, not so much.

Why was Caravan on the Grooveshark playlist?

Caravan was on there by mistake. Though, given that’s it’s against LA Woman, I suppose these are the last two times we’ll be seeing it anyway.

My Name is Jonas (Weezer) vs. When I Come Around (Green Day). RAD! 7.5:5 – Just not as pumped up for Green Day as I anticipated

When the Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin) v. Devil Went Down to Georgia (Charlie Daniels Band) 8.5:9 Breaks my heart to vote against one of my 3 favorite Zeppelin songs… but gotta do it.

Man on the Moon (REM) vs. Hand in Glove (Smiths) 8:7

Hey Jude (Beatles) vs. End of the Road (Boyz II Men). 6.5:7 Haven’t heard Boyz II Men in like 10 years… completely forgot about it.

Walk Like An Egyptian (Bangles) vs. Boys of Summer (Don Henley) 7.5:7 Loving the real rounds… just an awesome 45+ minutes of music.

    My Name Is Jonas: 7.5
    When I Come Around: 7.5

Somewhere inside, my inner wallet chain and Mossimo fall wardrobe is crying. Gotta give the tie- MNIJ takes it on crescendo control, while WICA is doing something completely different but equally good in rhythmic continuity.

    When The Levees Break: 7.5
Devil Went Down To Georgia: 6

Anyone see Charlie Daniels sell out in that commercial sometime in the last year? It wasn’t a good commercial since I can’t remember what it was for. This has nothing to do with the tournament, but my affinity for DWDTG goes in sinusoidal cycles with particularly long periods, and I’m coming out of a nadir right now. LZ, please step up.

    End of the Road: 7
    Hey Jude: 6

I’m the opposite of the Catholic here- the na na na’s got me really bored. End of the Road, on the other hand, is a prolific example of groundbreaking new directions for R&B in the early 90s, setting the stage for the absolute flood of this genre into CD market share as the decade continued. And it’s awesome.

    Man On The Moon: 5.5
    Hand In Glove: 5.5

Thought it was gonna go Smiths way coming in, but in the end neither of these really got me going. And, although we’re getting into an “enough is enough” territory with “I wish it was this song instead of that song,” I found myself jonesing hard for “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” about halfway through HIG.

    Boys of Summer: 8
    Walk Like An Egyptian: 7

Bangles came out swinging but the deal breaker here was lyrics and verse-chorus balance.
