And then there were 507! The Round of 512 has its first set of winners and losers, though all ten songs performed quite respectably.
Modern Love (David Bowie) def. Back on the Chain Gang (Pretenders), 97-83.
Such Great Heights (Postal Service) def. Reach Out and I’ll Be There (Four Topps), 100-95. I was glad to see this outcome, because Such Great Heights is precisely the type of song that would not make a mainsteam “top songs” list.
Captain Jack (Billy Joel) def. The Gambler (Kenny Rogers), 96-91. Here’s the thing- some of you didn’t like Captain Jack, but few of you really loved The Gambler. A few high scores for the Captain made the difference here.
California Girls (Beach Boys) def. The Great Pretender (Platters), 96-84. Though I agree with this outcome, I do hope to see a couple of 50s songs make it deep. There is a real earnestness and class about them.
Galileo (Indigo Girls) def. Norwegian Wood (Beatles), 98-91. This one was closer than I thought it’d be- a bad sign for the Indigo Girls, and a great sign for the Beatles, who have several superior songs waiting in the wings.
