Living the Dream Music Tournament: Day 11 (Play-in Round)

Pigs, they tend to wiggle when they walk. It’s Sunday, right? After a cold weekend you need some of the wackiest choices to hit the tournament yet.  Rest assured, while some of these songs are out there, they pack a punch.

Satisfaction (Rolling Stones) vs. Caravan (Van Morrison).  I almost didn’t include Satisfaction, but felt the tournament would lack credibility without it.  Caravan is taken from the Last Waltz, which is just leaps and bounds better than the original studio version.

Wildwood Flower (June Carter) vs. Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key (Billy Bragg w/ Wilco and Natalie Merchant).  Both songs are just incredibly pretty, perfect for a rainy Sunday.

Don’t Cry for Me Argentina (Me First and the Gimme Gimmes) vs. The Gang’s All Here (Dropkick Murphys).   Punk all-star cover band vs. pub heroes.  Just so you know, the Grooveshark version includes a skit after the song, so you can skip after the 2:30 mark.

Stereo (Pavement) vs. Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bob Dylan).  The battle of awesome, nonsense lyrics.   Stereo was the ultimate indie-rock anthem of the late 90s, Homesick Blues was the first taste of electric Dylan offered the world.

New Day (Wyclef Jean w/ Bono) vs. Wavin’ Flag (K’Naan).  Two of the most optimistic songs I’ve ever heard.  Not sure if any of you heard Wavin’ Flag this spring/summer, but a remixed version became the official anthem of the 2010 World Cup, and helped lift an entire continent.

Don’t have alot to say about these songs. Pretty weak as a whole.
    Satisfaction (Rolling Stones): 8.5 Classic.
Caravan (Van Morrison): 7 Not feeling it.

Wildwood Flower (June Carter): 5 Too country.
Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key (Billy Bragg w/ Wilco and Natalie Merchant): 3 WAAY too country.

Don’t Cry for Me Argentina (Me First and the Gimme Gimmes): 6 Not their best effort.
The Gang’s All Here (Dropkick Murphys): 4 Meh.

Stereo (Pavement): 4 Huh? Not particularly harmonic.
Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bob Dylan): 6 Old school/New School. One of Bob’s better attempts at singing.

New Day (Wyclef Jean w/ Bono): 6 Nice message, mediocre execution. Whole is not greater than the sum of its parts.

it should probably say something about my study habits that now that I’m done with finals, I am actually having a harder time finding moments to listen to these playlists. That said:

    Satisfaction (Rolling Stones) 8
    Caravan (Van Morrison) 7
Van’s the man, but Satisfaction is Satisfaction.

    Wildwood Flower (June Carter) 8.5
Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key (Billy Bragg w/ Wilco and Natalie Merchant) 7
Billy Bragg, Jeff Tweedy, Natalie Merchant- I’ve always like this song, particularly the use of the adjective “goggle-eyed”. But I know you didn’t write it- Woody Guthrie did. And when I listen to June Carter, it reminds me of my ultimate plan to find a girl one day that can play a guitar and sing pretty songs about Donegal, the Smoky Mountains, or somewhere equally bucolic.

Don’t Cry for Me Argentina (Me First and the Gimme Gimmes) 4
The Gang’s All Here (Dropkick Murphys) 6
Nothing really to say- I’ll take Irish pub fight jams over punk covers most days.

    Stereo (Pavement) 5
Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bob Dylan) 5.5
Not really into either of these (sorry Bobby)

New Day (Wyclef Jean w/ Bono) 6.5
    Wavin’ Flag (K’Naan) 8
Actually…the 2010 World Cup song was the Waka Waka song by Shakira. I sorta wish that was in this because it’s awesome. Regardless, K’Naan’s got something good here.

Satisfaction (Rolling Stones) 2 vs. Caravan (Van Morrison). 11
As I may have noted, anything from LW gets a +2. And Caravan was already at a 9. Van wandering backstage mid-line and mid-kick is basically my all-time favorite rocknroll moment. Presumably there just wasn’t enough coke ON stage. Don’t take it personally RS, just call me when your scorsese film is as awesome as theirs. Oh, wait, it wasn’t? Even in imax? Oh, nevermind then. Call me when we get to Exile.

Wildwood Flower (June Carter) 7 vs. Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key (Billy Bragg w/ Wilco and Natalie Merchant) 6.
    Heeeey June

Don’t Cry for Me Argentina (Me First and the Gimme Gimmes) 2 vs. The Gang’s All Here (Dropkick Murphys)4.
    Huh?

Stereo (Pavement) 7 vs. Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bob Dylan) 6
Difficult. But Bob’s got other stuff coming up.

New Day (Wyclef Jean w/ Bono) 5 vs. Wavin’ Flag (K’Naan) 6
Having real issues trying to figure out how to score these. Wavin flag has some good stuff going for it- its certainly not “the best song ever” or whatever we’re voting for, but its a fun song but also its not fair that it “inspired a continent” cause then are we voting on the merits of the songs or how they made other people feel or if I was listening to it when I made out with a cute boy this one time or if the performance is one of the best rock performances ever or if it was written by a legend but lost in an attic for decades and kinda awesome that it even exists at all? So many questions.

Good points. Caravan will get credit for 10 points; only Spinal Tap goes to 11.

As for my Wavin’ Flag interference- I guess that was a song I figured few people would know, so I wanted to give SOME context, since we all provide our own context, as you mentioned, for most of the songs in the tournament. Like that amazing Van Morrison kick- which adds so much luster.

      • Nick's avatar Nick says:

Van Morrison reminds me of a more coked up Bobcat Goldthwait. I might have given Caravan a few more points after seeing this, but still don’t think it deserves to beat Satisfaction…
