From October 10, 2005 to December 22, 2007, minus two road trip interludes across the country, Guillermo lived and worked on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in Katrina recovery (with Janos, who left the coast for law school in May of 2006.) Over time, he’ll be sharing his experiences via chapters from his forthcoming memoir Hurricane Camp Stories. It’s not just about Biloxi, or Katrina, or the other volunteers, or Guillermo, but it is about all of those things. For a list of available chapters on Living The Dream, see below:

“How strange you are, you idiot!
So you think because the rose
is red that you shall have the mastery?
The rose is green and will bloom,
overtopping you, green, livid

has hung too long upon a partial victory.”

“I stared and stared
and victory filled up
the little rented boat,
from the pool of bilge
where oil had spread a rainbow
around the rusted engine
to the bailer rusted orange,
the sun-cracked thwarts,
the oarlocks on their strings,
the gunnels— until everything
was rainbow, rainbow, rainbow!
And I let the fish go.”
-Elizabeth Bishop, “The Fish”
